A Book that Shows Us How to Read a Poem
By A Customer
I first read "The Well Wrought Urn" in 1978, when I was a first year grad student. Now I assign it for English majors taking their final undergraduate seminar. "The Well Wrought Urn" is a collection of essays on various poems. The essays were published in various journals in the 1940s. Why is the book still read? It is read because these essays are superb examples of literary criticism at its best: insightful, accessible, graceful, witty. It is read because when one reads a poem, then reads Brooks' essay about it, then reads the poem again, one learns a great deal about how to understand poetry and gain from it meaning and pleasure. Brooks' insights aren't the only valid insights into these poems, but they are good ones. It's not that we read these essays to understand these specific poems, but to understand how to approach any poem. There's a lot of interesting literary criticism available in libraries, though far more is not very interesting or graceful. Few essays, however, are more helpful to students as tools for teaching the technique of literary analysis. Of course, Brooks, as a New Critic, is using a style of literary criticism not presently trendy. Still, the technique of discovering insights about poetry is still the same, no matter what the theory one uses.
The review below this one is worthwhile, but I would suggest that the author misses the joke. What he takes as condescension is a condescension that includes the readers within the circle of initiates. It doesn't scoff at the reader. Thus, it is meant to help English majors think that they are a sort of blessed priesthood who have been initiated into the secrets of the fellowship. (When I was in grad school, that's what I thought we were.) Of course, this is all somewhat tongue in cheek and meant to be witty.
About twelve years ago I had the pleasure of hearing Brooks, then quite elderly (I don't know if he is still alive), present a paper at a conference. I remember him as slim, polite, self-effacing--the essence of the Southern gentleman at his best.

Literary Criticism as if Literature Mattered
By A Customer
This book, written nearly a half-century ago, has never been out of print. To read it is to see why. With Cleanth Brooks, who taught at Yale for most of his career, you feel as if you are sitting in a seminar with the most brilliant professor you've ever known, one who is also a true gentleman with extraordinary solicitude for his students/readers. He takes you through the poems line by line and helps you to *see* the artistry of the poet at work. And so sparkling is his prose style that the essays are themselves works of art. This book is especially appropriate for students who are just beginning to appreciate poetry.

The Poem Over the Poet
By Martin Asiner
When one compares Understanding Poetry with The Well Wrought Urn, one is struck by an odd pairing of likenesses with differences. Both seek to advance the acceptance of New Critical tenets by listing a number of well-known poems and analyzing each to determine how the poet focuses attention on the organic unity, which requires the reader to consider how that poet integrates a dozen or so manifestations of language and structure all of which coalesce to produce the one "correct" interpretation. The primary difference does not lie in the many more poems of Understanding Poetry but rather in Brooks' determination to reply to the charges of critics who loudly complained that Brooks had unfairly and unreasonably excluded any reference to disciplines external to the purely literal. For Brooks, these external differences were holdovers from the previous generation's fascination with the historical/biographical school of literary interpretation, a related theory which suggests that facts from the life and times of the poet are crucial in fixing the behind the scenes mixing of form and content as prerequisites to uncovering the meaning. Brooks went to considerable lengths to emphasize that he had no problem with historical/biographical approaches to literature. They had their place in the literary scheme of things but criticism was not one of them. Brooks noted that there was no objective proof that knowing a fact about either the reader or his times revealed anything germane about the text. What historical/biographical criticism did not address were the excellences of a poem. Nor did they explain how the varied elements of New Critical analyses (figurative language, imagery, symbolism, etc) interacted with each other to uncover the meaning.

The most striking chapter was "The Heresy of Paraphrase." Brooks contended that it was impossible to write a prose paraphrase of a poem such that the paraphrase contained the full power and sweeping imagination of the originating poem. What the paraphrase had were the external trappings of the poem with none of the language that made that poem a poem. Language is a complex unity of a myriad of factors that add up to more than the sum of a poem's parts. If one substitutes the language of a paraphraser for the language of the poet, the result is not unlike comparing lightning to a lightning bug. One simply cannot mistake one for the other. Brooks' anathema toward paraphrase fits well into his schema concerning New Criticism in general. The focus should be on the words of the text not the re-worded words or life or history of either the poet or the critic. That The Well Wrought Urn is still a staple of criticism suggests that even if New Criticism as a distinct theory has long since left center stage as a power player the ability to use its principles of close reading is a telling reminder that a critical eye on a text is a tool that will never go out of style regardless of the inane theory making use of it.

By Sarah Jo
This book compliments the course featured on Coursera taught by the author Emma Jakoi though I am sure the book would stand a long nicely as well. The content an in depth look at human physiology revealing a deeper understanding of the topic. I would not recommend this book to a complete novice as the material is rather deep. It is a lovely support to the course though.

House of Darkness: House of Light- The True Story, Vol. 1, by Andrea Perron

Roger and Carolyn Perron purchased the home of their dreams and eventual nightmares in December of 1970. The Arnold Estate, located just beyond the village of Harrisville, Rhode Island seemed the idyllic setting in which to raise a family. The couple unwittingly moved their five young daughters into the ancient and mysterious farmhouse. Secrets were kept and then revealed within a space shared by mortal and immortal alike. Time suddenly became irrelevant; fractured by spirits making their presence known then dispersing into the ether. The house is a portal to the past and a passage to the future. This is a sacred story of spiritual enlightenment, told some thirty years hence. The family is now somewhat less reticent to divulge a closely-guarded experience. Their odyssey is chronicled by the eldest sibling and is an unabridged account of a supernatural excursion. Ed and Lorraine Warren investigated this haunting in a futile attempt to intervene on their behalf. They consider the Perron family saga to be one of the most compelling and significant of a famously ghost-storied career as paranormal researchers. During a sance gone horribly wrong, they unleashed an unholy hostess; the spirit called Bathsheba . . . a God-forsaken soul. Perceiving herself to be mistress of the house, she did not appreciate the competition. Carolyn had long been under siege; overt threats issued in the form of fire . . . a mother's greatest fear. It transformed the woman in unimaginable ways. After nearly a decade the family left a once beloved home behind though it will never leave them, as each remains haunted by a memory. This tale is an inspiring testament to the resilience of the human spirit on a pathway of discovery: an eternal journey for the living and the dead.

About the Author
Andrea Perron was born in Rhode Island in 1958. She is a graduate of Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pa. having earned an inter-disciplinary degree in philosophy and English literature. This memoir waited thirty years to be told, allowing the time and distance necessary for her family to reveal these long held secrets. The author is currently preparing for release of the second volume in this remarkable trilogy. John Shaw created the cover portrait of their farmhouse as a parting gift. Two months after the Perron family abandoned this place in the country, John, all of nineteen years old, drove from Rhode Island to Georgia. He presented his friends with the watercolor; painted from memory, in memory of a special house which touched his life as well. It remains a treasured keepsake. They loved him then as they love him now

Sorry to say--but don't buy this book
By Rae
I bought this book after I heard the movie for it was coming out. And I finished it merely because I had paid so much (in Kindle terms) for it. Clearly, the author is a well educated, erudite (one of her favorite words) woman. And clearly the author can write. But, she can't write this story. There is no plot line, no chronology, not clear recounting of events. It's merely a warm up to the main act, which must be--if she writes at this pace, in the last 10 pages of book 3. This is not a ghost story book, this is a philosophical venture with a smattering of "ghostly" incidents strewn through it amongst quotes from authors and philosophers. I'm sorry, but I thought editors would keep such poor writing from being printed. Under no circumstances, believe the review that his is a "page turner". It is not. And if you wanted to write a book on philosophy, do it instead, but don't waste the readers time. And for goodness sake, stop using the word "ether".

How not to write a book
By Amazon Customer
Count me as a first time reviewer, and this book was so poorly written, I simply had to put my two cents in. I have come to a totally new appreciation for editors and the rest of the staff at professional publishing houses. Andrea writes in one chapter about an incident in 1972. In the next chapter, it's now 1976. Suddenly you're reading about how they'd only been in the house "a couple of months." Huh? What? A story, any story, simply has to flow. This doesn't. It's choppy and takes you all over.

In one chapter she suddenly brings up "Holly." Unfortunately, she doesn't actually introduce the character until several chapters later - it's at that point we find out who this "Holly" person is. There are typos in here, and no, I'm not normally the typo police, but it seems unprofessional. Andrea also writes about the Warrens all the way through the first book, but you don't find out how it is they came to be there or what actually happened until book 2. Had she put things in chronological order, her readers might understand more of what she was trying to convey to us with what the Warrens brought to the story.

Okay, so Andrea gets a dog and names her Bathsheba, then they encounter "Bathsheba" at the house. I kept waiting for her to comment on such a coincidence, but she doesn't. It just seemed natural to me that she would - otherwise why even put it in? She also brings up an incident and writes about it more than once. We got it the first time, thanks! And enough with the "Boo!" It's way overdone.

How many of you want to throttle the mother yourself? After a couple of incidents in the 'burbs, she sees this place, takes every dime out of the bank account and they make the move work. Yet, after her children are frightened, threatened, nearly killed (not to mention what she, herself, was going through), she still keeps her family there, year after year - subjecting them to horrors they still carry.

I have to admit, I skipped over much of the book (especially volume 2), when Andrea starts carrying on about philosophical musings. That's not my cup of tea. I grew up on a haunted farm. There can never be a book that will be able to convey the intense terror, the dread, the heart pounding and the sheer intensity of dealing with something not of this world; but I read these to try and understand, maybe get some insight into what I went through. To be fair, there are some gold nuggets in this book. There just aren't enough to overcome the bad writing. I really, really, really wish I'd read these reviews before purchasing the books.

Amityville Called, They'd Like Their Story Back
By WhosYourChubby
Update 7/23/2013

Andrea Perron has simultaneously proven both the failure of the American education system and the desperation of Hollywood in these modern times in which they'll slog for years through endless pages of drivel and sophomoric narrative padding in order to tease a semi-coherent and decently scary story out of what would otherwise be nothing more than a prime candidate for both the physical and digital recycle bins. If you can believe it, self-proclaimed "author," Andrea, actually holds an inter-disciplinary degree in philosophy and English literature from Chatham College in Pittsburgh, PA. Meaning that she actually went to school, spent the time, and paid a whole bunch of money to learn about English literature, and still produced these "novels." I don't know whether to laugh at or cry for her.

Now having seen the movie, I can safely say that everything I wrote in my review is absolutely, completely and 100% justified; besides the names, they didn't use a single line or event from the book in the movie, much to the moviegoers' delight, I'm sure. As the "Warrens," played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga (who are a bajillion times more sane, logical and sympathetic than the Warrens are in real life), explain in the movie, ghosts are not able to possess people. Only demons can do that. This means that the only ghost they kept from the book, Bathsheba, is now a demon and no longer a ghost. Surprise, surprise.

To the person who said that the movie was going to be different because it was from the "Warren Files," and more from their point of view, let me just say how funny it is that the Warrens just happened to skip over the part in the book (in Vol. 2) where the husband physically threw them out of the house and refused to let them back in and how the story, according to the movie, is now about how the Warrens have super powers and save the day sans capes and spandex.

If you've come here after seeing the movie looking for more details about what happened in Harrisville, save your money and turn back while you can. This book has nothing to do with the movie at all (which is why the movie is so good), and will do nothing but give you a literary migraine.

Original Review:
Let me begin my diatribe, if you'll indulge me, fair reader, with a disturbing trend I've noticed in the reviews on this book. Almost all of the people who gave it a 5 star rating, or even a slightly positive review, are from or around the town the book is written in, Harrisville, Rhode Island. Apparently these people are desperate for some vicarious fame by association with the town this dreadfully written book takes place in. Read them with a grain of salt. If you're looking for an honest review from someone who is not skeptical of the supernatural, just critical of this, and I use the term loosely, "author's" work, then please read on for a detailed, unbiased review.

I think the reason it took Andrea 30 years to write this book was that she needed to read "The Amityville Horror", "The Devil in Connecticut" and "In a Dark Place: The Story of a True Haunting" a few times so she could steal as much of their stories as possible for her own. She also needed time to wait for Poltergeist, Burnt Offerings and the Exorcist to come out on DVD so she could watch them all a few times (and their special features!) for some new ideas. This book is nothing but a derivative retelling of better, scarier ghost stories. All she did was put her own family into the roles of other, more interesting characters; your basic "fanfic," if you will. The funny part is, I could have lived with that if not for the horrible writing. A good story is a good story, even if the general theme has told before. But even a great story loses its gravitas and poignancy when told by a seven year old, which is about Andrea's level of writing. Well, to be fair, it's more like a seven year old who knows how to press Shift+F7 in Word and come up with bigger words to use from the list of synonyms, but who then overlooks the green squiggles of the Grammar Check function. She also entertained the infamous nutbags, Ed and Lorraine Warren. All you have to do is a quick Google search on them and you will find out how untrustworthy these two are. Being they also worked on the Amityville case and the two Connecticut cases, I can see why this story features all of their greatest hits: who could forget the classic, "It must be a DEMON," or "The spirit is mocking the Holy Trinity," and the ever delightful, "Of course we have no proof of ANYTHING, you're supposed to just believe whatever we say!" Could it be mere coincidence that Harrisville reeks of the same pseudo-religious, quasi-supernatural hokum featured in Amityville and Connecticut? I think not!

Let's start with Andrea's grammar and punctuation. She loves to put about 3 bold words on each page as she thinks the reader is too dumb to get the meaning of what she is trying to tell us. You know when an airheaded teenage girl gets upset and overemphasizes a word to show she's really upset? That's what I feel like she's doing. "But `Moooooooom' there's like `totally' a ghost and it's really `scary.'" There's no good reason to emphasize words like that. If you put the word there, trust us, as the readers, to be able to know how that word is supposed to work with the rest of them to convey the idea your describing in that sentence. She constantly insults our collective intelligence. For example, she feels she has to emphasize the fact that during an argument over money that someone is feeling "angry."

She also likes to tell us what everyone was "feeling" for 3 or more pages without describing the actual event that caused the upset. If you are lucky, she will tell you a few chapters later and then she rehashes the 3 pages again of what everyone was "feeling." It reminded me of when your teacher wants you to write a 500 word essay. Like an underachieving, lazy student, most of the book is just filling space. At one point she describes in painfully overblown details of her Mother's meltdown in the kitchen over her husband killing flies, ala Amityville Horror. She then copied and pasted the same story later on in the book hoping the reader would not remember she already told this story. She did this a few times. Maybe she never went back and read over what she wrote. It was painful enough for me to read once, so I can't imagine what torture she was facing having to re-read it as the author.

Apparently desperate to show that she has some grasp of what colons and semi-colons are Andrea doesn't hesitate to use them at every possible turn. Ironically, she doesn't use them correctly. She loves to do stuff like this: "The mother had a bad feeling; a dread she felt." A little redundant, am I right? Half the time those little add-on's are just terrible, as in, "...; an angelic angel." Keep your sanity and just skip over anything immediately to the right of any colon or semicolon. What this book really needs is a, "colonoscopy." (Cue rimshot) You thought that was a terrible pun? Just you wait; Andrea's got a metric ton of them waiting for you! Like, "They did not stand a ghost of a chance with the ghosts in the house!" Also, I think Andrea suffers from multiple personality disorder. I mean, what else could possibly explain her tendency to switch back and forth from the third person narrative to the second person and back to the third every few pages?

In all honesty, I would have never finished this book if I had not paid money for it. You will find that skipping long monologues of pure, unadulterated "feeling" will help you to read the book faster. I think she fancies herself the next Steven King and thinks that if she puts as many words on a page as he does, she'll be just as critically acclaimed.

Now before you say, "Oh, he is a skeptic and a non-believer, which is why he is so mean about all this," that is just not true. I do believe in ghosts and have lived in 2 houses that had ghosts, one who made me uncomfortable enough to the point I did move out. I won't directly say that her book is full of lies, (libel laws and all that), but I think it is strange that all the Warren cases tell the same story: A family moves into a dream house, it turns out to be haunted, the father will not believe it until the very end, Lorraine Warren kicks open the front door and starts yelling about demons and then everyone gets a nice, lucrative movie deal out of it. By the way, "The Conjuring," based on The Warren Files concerning this case, is coming this summer to a theater near you! And even if it was real, what kind of mother would subject her 5 kids to this kind of thing for 10 year? Yes, 10 YEARS!!

So to spare you the terror of trying to read this book, I'll summarize it for you: Estrogen soaked family pester their absentee salesman father to throw all of their money into a farm they don't really need and that the owner is super desperate to offload on them. After ignoring this first warning sign, the family can't get warm in a 200 year old house in Rhode Island during winter (umm... duh?) and keep smelling death in certain rooms. After ignoring this second warning sign, the mother is attacked by the ghost of Joan Crawford (think wire hangers), the kids start seeing creepy stuff and the doors very politely open themselves. Flies gather in the house where the kids keep sandwiches under the bed (shocking!) and then the mother has a nightmare and claws up her husband who is apparently a very sound sleeper. After trying to set herself on fire several times, the mother spirals into a generic supernatural obsession (cue the montage of Mom in the local library discovering the evil history of the house), and ropes everyone she possibly can into it, culminating with the arrival of the Warrens who proceed to add a few Mentos to the mom's glass of crazy, which happens to taste a lot like diet soda. Add in some levitating beds, telepathic crows, self-sweeping brooms and other fun things, and you've got a recipe for a good kind of crazy that is seriously hampered by the author's grievous lack of an editor.

Fractured Minds: A Case-Study Approach to Clinical Neuropsychology, by Jenni Ogden

Fractured Minds introduces the reader to clinical neuropsychology through vivid case descriptions of adults who have suffered brain damage. At one level, this is a book about the courage, humor, and determination to triumph over illness and disability that many "ordinary people" demonstrate when coping with the extraordinary stress of a brain disorder. On another level, it is a well-referenced and up-to-date textbook that provides a holistic view of the practice of clinical neuropsychology. Included are reader-friendly descriptions and explanations of a wide range of neurological disorders and neuroscientific concepts. Two introductory chapters are followed by 17 chapters that each focus on a specific disorder and include research, clinical assessment, rehabilitation, and a detailed case study. Disorders range across the full spectrum from common ones such as traumatic brain injury and dementia, to rare disorders such as autotopagnosia. Each of the 16 chapters retained from the first edition has been revised to reflect current research and clinical advances. Three new chapters on multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease incorporate discussion of important current topics such as genetically-transmitted diseases, genetic counseling, gene transplantation, functional neurosurgery, and the complex ethical issues that go hand-in-hand with these new techniques. This informative and engaging book will be of interest to students of clinical psychology, neuropsychology, and neurology, health professionals who work with neurological patients, neurological patients and their families, and lay readers who are simply fascinated by the mind and brain.

I wish she had more books out there!
By Jennie Barber
Ms. Ogden's writing has a touch of Oliver Sacks-like quality. Not only does she describe each patient's clinical assessment in terms of scores on neuropsychological testing batteries, but she also describes the processes by which the patients cope with their medical problems and how they affect their lives. The patients are seen as human beings overcoming difficulties, rather than anonymous cases. A great book for those interested in clinical neuropsychology. This book was also be very useful as a text book, as it describes medically what's happening to each patient as well as how it affects them behaviorally on neuropsychological testing and socially in their everyday lives.

Interesting and very informative
By Amanda Price
For several years, I have used this book for an undergraduate class I teach on Neuropsychology. The chapters, which each focus on a distinct type of brain damage or disorder, are well written and a relatively easy read. They also do an excellent job of covering the science of what causes each type of damage and why the damage impacts behavior the way that it does. My students seem to really enjoy each chapter and Ogden's discussion of her patients stimulate a great deal of discussion in class. I find Ogden's coverage to be more comprehensive and detailed than Oliver Sacks but she is certainly no less interesting to read.

This is a great read
By Robert Griffith
Dr. Ogden brings to life the case study approach. She writes well, clear and is informative. She gives us basic definitions in neurology and spells them out clearly; the difference between alexia and dyslexia, for example. She focuses on the machinery at the neurologists disposal and the testing battery of the neuropsychologist. She tells how each person tends to be one minute normal, the next, no so. She follows closely how something like neurotoxicity develops, a people cope with neurological illness and follows them in treatment. The book is full of learning material. I highly recommend it to the practicing psychologist or neuropsychologist, or someone curious about how the brain functions.

The Singing Sword: Camulod Chronicles, Book 2, by Jack Whyte

We know the legends: Arthur brought justice to a land that had known only cruelty and force; his father, Uther, carved a kingdom out of the chaos of the fallen Roman Empire; the sword Excalibur, drawn from stone by England's greatest king.

But legends do not tell the whole tale. Legends do not tell of the despairing Roman soldiers, abandoned by their empire, faced with the choice of fleeing back to Rome, or struggling to create a last stronghold against the barbarian onslaughts from the north and east. Legends do not tell of Arthur's great-grandfather, Publius Varrus, the warrior who marked the boundaries of a reborn empire with his own shed blood; they do not tell of Publius's wife, Luceiia, British-born and Roman-raised, whose fierce beauty burned pale next to her passion for law and honor.

With The Camulod Chronicles, Jack Whyte tells us what legend has forgotten: the history of blood and violence, passion and steel, out of which was forged a great sword, and a great nation. The Singing Sword continues the gripping epic begun in The Skystone: As the great night of the Dark Ages falls over Roman Britain, a lone man and woman fight to build a last stronghold of law and learning - a crude hill-fort, which one day, long after their deaths, will become a great city...known as Camelot.

Whyte strikes again
By A Customer
While not the "Grabber" that The Skysone was, Whyte has managed a solid second book in what must now be considered an ongoing series leading up to, and including, the Arthurian period. Traditionally, second books in a series seem to fall short of the first, but Whyte's The Singing Sword does not miss by much. He is historically accurate, bringing in actual events like the Pelagian heresy, the final withdrawal of the legions from Britain in the early Fifth century, and the tangled succession crisis of a divided empire. Whyte's long suit is character development and his ability to create flawed human beings with which the reader can identify. Also, the book moves along with plenty of action to propel the story forward. Critics may argue that Whyte places the genesis of the Arthurian period too early, but there is no solid historical basis to the contrary. Whether neo-Roman, Celt, tribal Briton, or some combination of all, we can only speculate about whom Arthur's ancestors may have been. Whyte's explanation is plausible. The Singing Sword is an excellent "bridge" to The Eagle's Brood. Thanks to Jack Whyte for a first rate "read". petucker@aol.com

My goodness. What a pleasure of a read.
By G. Parnell
Forget the romantic setting of ancient Roman Brittania! Jack Whyte's writing style is unmatched by most modern writers. He could write an entire novel about jelly donughts and make it read like a charm. I cannot put it into words exactly how Jack Whyte writes. All I can say is that his words are a pleasure. I ripped through all 547 pages of this paperback in a few days. What an ease and joy. Very relaxing. Very gratifying. It just cements my opinion about all the garbage that is being published today. People making millions on books that are horrible reads. Jack Whyte is the exception!
Jack is obviously well schooled in the history of very ancient England. The Celts, Picts, Scots and Romans are all represented with stunning clarity and picturesque description.
My father had this book laying around in his den. I picked it up and breezed right through it. I hadn't read anything by Jack Whyte prior. I was an instant fan from page one. I hadn't even read the first book "The Skystone" either.
I guess one might want to read the books in order, but I know from experience that this isn't necessary! If you, too, have been put off by modern authors - give Jack a chance to reclaim your "gosh wow!"

This Series Sings
By Shawn M. Warswick
Jack Whyte continues his tale of Publius Varrus and Caius Brittanicus and their formation of the "colony" of Camaloud. In this, the second novel in the series, the Legions have departed and Arthur's Great Grandparents are struggling for their survival.
Whyte's strong suit is his faithfulness to historical detail. From the departure of the Legions to the Pelagian Heresy, from life in a divided and crumbling Empire to the invasion of post Roman Britain by the Saxons and other "barbarians."
Once again, as in the first installment, Whyte's description and detail of adult sexual situations makes it a novel not for the young or those who easily blush. However, this isn't a condemnation of Whyte or his novel. It is simply more "adult" oriented than the average fantasy novel.
Another strong suite for Whyte is his character development. Each character grows and expands as the story evolves. Furthermore, Whyte doesn't make his characters caricatures so common to most fantasy novels. For example, Publius is certainly a flawed hero and we are shown his more "human" side.
You like Action? There is plenty of action moving the story along. Before you know it, the novel is done and you are dying to read the next installment.
This series does an amazing job bringing the world King Arthur would be born into to life. It may not be what really happened, but it is certainly possible. Just be warned, this novel will leave you hungry for the next intallment.
