Regarded by literary historians as the play that signaled the start of modern Mexican drama, this enthrallingplayis set in 1930s post-revolutionary Mexico and was censored by the Mexican government in its first years of the late 1940s. It centers around Csar Rubio, afailed history professor who is mistaken for a missing revolutionary hero by the same name, but instead of an error he sees an opportunity and attempts to capitalize on the other man's fame. He quickly becomes disillusioned with his new false identity and gets swept up in a campaign for governor, leading him to realize there is more to politics than famous names and just exactly what happened to the real Csar Rubio.

Oedipus Tyrannus: Tragic Heroism and the Limits of Knowledge, by Charles Segal

Oedipus Tyrannus: Tragic Heroism and the Limits of Knowledge, 2/e, is an accessible yet in-depth literary study of Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus (Oedipus Rex)--the most famous Greek tragedy and one of the greatest masterpieces of world literature. This unique volume combines a close, scene-by-scene literary analysis of the text with an account of the play's historical, intellectual, social, and mythical background and also discusses the play's place in the development of the myth and its use of the theatrical conventions of Greek drama. Based on a fresh scrutiny of the Greek text, this book offers a contemporary literary interpretation of the play, including a readable, nontechnical discussion of its underlying moral and philosophical issues; the role of the gods; the interaction of character, fate, and chance; the problem of suffering and meaning; and Sophocles' conception of tragedy and tragic heroism. This lucid guide traces interpretations of the play from antiquity to modern times--from Aristotle to Hegel, Nietzsche, Freud, Lacan, Lvi-Strauss, Girard, and Vernant--and shows its central role in shaping the European conception of tragedy and modern notions of the self. This second edition draws on new approaches to the study of Greek tragedy; discusses the most recent interpretative scholarship on the play; and contains an annotated up-to-date bibliography. Ideal for courses in classical literature in translation, Greek drama, classical civilization, theater, and literature and arts, Oedipus Tyrannus: Tragic Heroism and the Limits of Knowledge, 2/e, will also reward general readers interested in literature and especially tragedy.

I recommend taking a 5 minute break to drink some water
By Sheeba Contreras
Just passed my ANCC FNP certification exam yesterday February 10, 2015!!! Just a heads up -- my exam had about 40% non clinical questions so make sure you focus on studying theories/ethics/research. Not too many ethics/research questions but a TON of THEORY questions. I also had about 10-15 picture questions, 10 drag & drop questions, and about 10 multiple answer questions (but they specify how many correct answers there are.) If you take ANCC, make sure you spend at least 3 full days reviewing non-clinical info... a lot was common sense but it helps to have some knowledge about it. I would say don't stress too much about memorizing labs... know the basic ones (for anemia, BUN/Cr/ etc.) There are 200 questions on ANCC ... your brain will get tired! I recommend taking a 5 minute break to drink some water, go to the restroom, and splash your face with some water at the 100 question mark. It will help!!

Now review of books I used:

1) Barkley -- I went to the Barkley review course and I would say it was just okay. The audio/book is also just okay and it's mostly memorizing information (everything is presented in outline form). I think for the FNP exam, its best to UNDERSTAND diseases/treatments instead of memorizing information because the questions are formatted in a way that memorizing random info isn't going to cut it. You can use the book, but I would say don't let it be your primary study tool. However, this was the best book for non-clinical review since it has the most information. I also listened to the audio whenever I was in the car.

2) Fitzgerald -- I really love this book! It definitely is more information than you really need to know but it really help me understand the material way more than Barkley's review did. If you have time, I would say read through this book once or twice -- it has questions embedded throughout the review material so it helps you to really think. THIS NEW UPDATED EDITION DOES HAVE INFORMATION ON NON-CLINICAL QUESTION! It was a good review but make sure you study other materials as well because it mainly focused on ethics & reimbursement and not so much on theory and research. I was getting mostly 65-70's when doing practice tests but after reading this book, I started getting 75-80s on practice tests. I would recommend reviewing this book a month prior (for 2 weeks). Then 2-3 weeks before your exam, put it away and focus on Leik! You don't want to overwhelm yourself before the exam.

3) Leik - BEST STUDY BOOK. I felt this was most helpful in my review. After reading Fitzgerald, Leik's book does a really good job at tying everything together so it will be easier for you to apply your knowledge on the exam. I believe Fitzgerald & Liek combo is the best for studying! And practice questions--- bonus!! I did 25/day for about a month to prepare me. Once you start getting scores in the 80's... you're ready!

Good luck! :)

Best review for AANP
By opinionorama
I just passed my AANP FNP board exam today and felt well-prepared.

I used several materials to prepare, and this book was the most helpful for the following reasons:
--Topics and depth most closely matched those on the exam compared to other materials I used.
--Well written practice questions with few errors. I would say the actual exam questions are a bit more difficult, but only in that they have another couple of layers to them, but not different material.
--good clarity and summary of topics using the latest guidelines.

Topics not covered in this book that I recommend spending time on are Tanner stages, HIV, and more on infectious disease in general.

Other materials I used which were somewhat helpful were Codina-Leik, Winland Brown, and Fitzgerald audio. I took a practice test with aanp-fnp.com and it was TERRIBLE.

The test bank on the Davis web site is free with the book, or you can buy it separately. It has some problems and I did not find it very useful. It includes all of the questions from the book, and every quiz you take repeats multiple questions so it is not actually a fresh quiz. Additionally, many of the questions are missing information that is presumably given in another question, so you have nothing on which to base your answer. For example, I got two questions that gave me only an age and a gender and asked me the next appropriate step for the patient. What?!?

I also advise extreme caution when scratching off the access code for the test bank. I did not scratch it off just right, and was unable to read the code, and the customer service dept. at FHEA actually told me I would need to purchase access to the test bank that was supposed to be free with the book since it was my fault for doing a bad job scratching the code off! Thankfully, Amazon replaced the entire book without charge.

Wonderful Study Guide
By Kelly123
Ordered this book to aid in my studying during my NP primary care class. This book is divided by body system and then further divided by disease. There are questions and then a discussion about the specific disease. This book helps the student to focus in on the important aspects of specific diseases. I highly recommend anything by Margaret Fitzgerald...she is the NP review guru!! :)

Poorly written
By Melody Rose Driver
I bought this book for engineering graphics class. Did great in the class no help to this book. I bought the Kindle version which did not have traditional page numbers to flip to. Instructions for lab exercises were not easy to follow. If not translated from a different language, then whomever wrote this book did not take a technical writing class. Everyone in class griped about this book for the same reason but it was mandatory for the class.

The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism, by Naoki Higashida

“One of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read. It’s truly moving, eye-opening, incredibly vivid.”—Jon Stewart, The Daily Show

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
NPR • The Wall Street Journal •Bloomberg Business •Bookish

FINALIST FOR THE BOOKS FOR A BETTER LIFE FIRST BOOK AWARD • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

You’ve never read a book like The Reason I Jump. Written by Naoki Higashida, a very smart, very self-aware, and very charming thirteen-year-old boy with autism, it is a one-of-a-kind memoir that demonstrates how an autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds in ways few of us can imagine. Parents and family members who never thought they could get inside the head of their autistic loved one at last have a way to break through to the curious, subtle, and complex life within.

Using an alphabet grid to painstakingly construct words, sentences, and thoughts that he is unable to speak out loud, Naoki answers even the most delicate questions that people want to know. Questions such as: “Why do people with autism talk so loudly and weirdly?” “Why do you line up your toy cars and blocks?” “Why don’t you make eye contact when you’re talking?” and “What’s the reason you jump?” (Naoki’s answer: “When I’m jumping, it’s as if my feelings are going upward to the sky.”) With disarming honesty and a generous heart, Naoki shares his unique point of view on not only autism but life itself. His insights—into the mystery of words, the wonders of laughter, and the elusiveness of memory—are so startling, so strange, and so powerful that you will never look at the world the same way again.

In his introduction, bestselling novelist David Mitchell writes that Naoki’s words allowed him to feel, for the first time, as if his own autistic child was explaining what was happening in his mind. “It is no exaggeration to say that The Reason I Jump allowed me to round a corner in our relationship.” This translation was a labor of love by David and his wife, KA Yoshida, so they’d be able to share that feeling with friends, the wider autism community, and beyond. Naoki’s book, in its beauty, truthfulness, and simplicity, is a gift to be shared.

Praise for The Reason I Jump

“This is an intimate book, one that brings readers right into an autistic mind.”—Chicago Tribune (Editor’s Choice)

“Amazing times a million.”—Whoopi Goldberg, People

“The Reason I Jump is a Rosetta stone. . . . This book takes about ninety minutes to read, and it will stretch your vision of what it is to be human.”—Andrew Solomon, The Times (U.K.)

“Extraordinary, moving, and jeweled with epiphanies.”—The Boston Globe

“Small but profound . . . [Higashida’s] startling, moving insights offer a rare look inside the autistic mind.”—Parade

Amazon.com Review
Author One-on-One: David Mitchell and Andrew Solomon

David Mitchell is the international bestselling author of Cloud Atlas and four other novels.
Andrew Solomon is the author of several books including Far From the Tree and The Noonday Demon.

Andrew Solomon: Why do you think that such narratives from inside autism are so rare--and what do you think allowed Naoki Higashida to find a voice?

David Mitchell: Autism comes in a bewildering and shifting array of shapes, severities, colors and sizes, as you of all writers know, Dr. Solomon, but the common denominator is a difficulty in communication. Naturally, this will impair the ability of a person with autism to compose narratives, for the same reason that deaf composers are thin on the ground, or blind portraitists. While not belittling the Herculean work Naoki and his tutors and parents did when he was learning to type, I also think he got a lucky genetic/neural break: the manifestation of Naoki's autism just happens to be of a type that (a) permitted a cogent communicator to develop behind his initial speechlessness, and (b) then did not entomb this communicator by preventing him from writing. This combination appears to be rare.

AS: What, in your view, is the relationship between language and intelligence? How do autistic people who have no expressive language best manifest their intelligence?

DM: It would be unwise to describe a relationship between two abstract nouns without having a decent intellectual grip on what those nouns are. Language, sure, the means by which we communicate: but intelligence is to definition what Teflon is to warm cooking oil. I feel most at home in the school that talks about 'intelligences' rather than intelligence in the singular, whereby intelligence is a fuzzy cluster of aptitudes: numerical, emotional, logical, abstract, artistic, 'common sense' – and linguistic. In this model, language is one subset of intelligence – and, Homo sapiens being the communicative, cooperative bunch that we are, rather a crucial one, for without linguistic intelligence it's hard to express (or even verify the existence of) the other types. I guess that people with autism who have no expressive language manifest their intelligence the same way you would if duct tape were put over your mouth and a 'Men in Black'-style memory zapper removed your ability to write: by identifying problems and solving them. I want a chocky bicky, but the cookie jar's too high: I'll get the stool and stand on it. Or, Dad's telling me I have to have my socks on before I can play on his iPhone, but I'd rather be barefoot: I'll pull the tops of my socks over my toes, so he can't say they aren't on, then I'll get the iPhone. Or, This game needs me to add 7+4: I'll input 12, no, that's no good, try 11, yep...

AS: Naoki Higashida comes off as very charming, but describes being very difficult for his parents. Do you think that the slightly self-mocking humor he shows will give him an easier life than he'd have had without the charm?

DM: Definitely. Humor is a delightful sensation, and an antidote to many ills. I feel that it is linked to wisdom, but I'm neither wise nor funny enough to have ever worked out quite how they intertwine.

AS: As you translated this book from the Japanese, did you feel you could represent his voice much as it was in his native language? Did you find that there are Japanese ways of thinking that required as much translation from you and your wife as autistic ways required of the author?

DM: Our goal was to write the book as Naoki would have done if he was a 13 year-old British kid with autism, rather than a 13 year-old Japanese kid with autism. Once we had identified that goal, many of the 1001 choices you make while translating became clear. Phrasal and lexical repetition is less of a vice in Japanese –- it's almost a virtue –- so varying Naoki's phrasing, while keeping the meaning, was a ball we had to keep our eyes on. Linguistic directness can come over as vulgar in Japanese, but this is more of a problem when Japanese is the Into language than when it is the Out Of language. The only other regular head-bender is the rendering of onomatopoeia, for which Japanese has a synaesthetic genius – not just animal sounds, but qualities of light, or texture, or motion. Those puzzles were fun, though

AS: Higashida has written dream-like stories that punctuate the narrative. Can you say what functional or narrative purpose they serve in the book?

DM: Their inclusion was, I guess, an idea of the book's original Japanese editor, for whom I can't speak. But for me they provide little coffee breaks from the Q&A, as well as showing that Naoki can write creatively and in slightly different styles. The story at the end is an attempt to show us neurotypicals what it would feel like if we couldn't communicate. The story is, in a way, The Reason I Jump but re-framed and re-hung in fictional form. They also prove that Naoki is capable of metaphor and analogy.

AS: The book came out in its original form in Japan some years ago. Do you know what has happened to the author since the book was published?

DM: Naoki has had a number of other books about autism published in Japan, both prior to and after Jump. He's now about 20, and he's doing okay. He receives invitations to talk about autism at various universities and institutions throughout Japan. This involves him reading 2a presentation aloud, and taking questions from the audience, which he answers by typing. This isn't easy for him, but he usually manages okay. In terms of public knowledge about autism, Europe is a decade behind the States, and Japan's about a decade behind us, and Naoki would view his role as that of an autism advocate, to close that gap. (I happen to know that in a city the size of Hiroshima, of well over a million people, there isn't a single doctor qualified to give a diagnosis of autism.)

Review
“One of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read. It’s truly moving, eye-opening, incredibly vivid.”—Jon Stewart, The Daily Show

“Please don’t assume that The Reason I Jump is just another book for the crowded autism shelf. . . . This is an intimate book, one that brings readers right into an autistic mind—what it’s like without boundaries of time, why cues and prompts are necessary, and why it’s so impossible to hold someone else’s hand. Of course, there’s a wide range of behavior here; that’s why ‘on the spectrum’ has become such a popular phrase. But by listening to this voice, we can understand its echoes.”—Chicago Tribune (Editor’s Choice)

“Amazing times a million.”—Whoopi Goldberg, People

“The Reason I Jump is a Rosetta stone. . . . I had to keep reminding myself that the author was a thirteen-year-old boy when he wrote this . . . because the freshness of voice coexists with so much wisdom. This book takes about ninety minutes to read, and it will stretch your vision of what it is to be human.”—Andrew Solomon, The Times (U.K.)

“Extraordinary, moving, and jeweled with epiphanies.”—The Boston Globe

“Small but profound . . . [Naoki Higashida’s] startling, moving insights offer a rare look inside the autistic mind.”—Parade

“Surely one of the most remarkable books yet to be featured in these pages . . . With about one in 88 children identified with an autism spectrum disorder, and family, friends, and educators hungry for information, this inspiring book’s continued success seems inevitable.”—Publishers Weekly

“We have our received ideas, we believe they correspond roughly to the way things are, then a book comes along that simply blows all this so-called knowledge out of the water. This is one of them. . . . An entry into another world.”—Daily Mail (U.K.)

“Every page dismantles another preconception about autism. . . . Once you understand how Higashida managed to write this book, you lose your heart to him.”—New Statesman (U.K.)

“Astonishing. The Reason I Jump builds one of the strongest bridges yet constructed between the world of autism and the neurotypical world. . . . There are many more questions I’d like to ask Naoki, but the first words I’d say to him are ‘thank you.’”—The Sunday Times (U.K.)

“This is a guide to what it feels like to be autistic. . . . In Mitchell and Yoshida’s translation, [Higashida] comes across as a thoughtful writer with a lucid simplicity that is both childlike and lyrical. . . . Higashida is living proof of something we should all remember: in every autistic child, however cut off and distant they may outwardly seem, there resides a warm, beating heart.”—Financial Times (U.K.)

“Higashida’s child’s-eye view of autism is as much a winsome work of the imagination as it is a user’s manual for parents, carers and teachers. . . . This book gives us autism from the inside, as we have never seen it. . . . [Higashida] offers readers eloquent access into an almost entirely unknown world.”—The Independent (U.K.)

“The Reason I Jump is awise, beautiful, intimate and courageous explanation of autism as it is lived every day by one remarkable boy. Naoki Higashida takes us ‘behind the mirror’—his testimony should be read by parents, teachers, siblings, friends, and anybody who knows and loves an autistic person. I only wish I’d had this book to defend myself when I was Naoki’s age.”—Tim Page, author of Parallel Play and professor of journalism and music at the University of Southern California

“[Higashida] illuminates his autism from within. . . . Anyone struggling to understand autism will be grateful for the book and translation.”—Kirkus Reviews

My Brother Also Jumps
By C. Wong
I read a lot of books about autism because my brother is severely autistic. I am very thankful to Nagoki Higashida for answered questions that I have about my brother's behavior and the way that he thinks. And also answering some questions that had not even occurred to me! His voice came through this book as very genuine and I have recognized some of the same feelings in my brother as Nagoki Higashida.

In fact I wish that my brother had the experience of being trained to use the special keyboard. So many things are locked inside for my brother but Nagoki been has let some of them out via the keyboard.
My brother also jumps. He always does this just before he starts a walk. He also loves to walk in places filled with nature. He wanted to go to a park when I asked him where on our latest visit. I have read quite a few books written by Asperger's but this one by a boy who has autism rings home for me. My brother can speak but usually he does not initiate any conversation, he is limited to a few words of a reply. I can see the struggle that he goes through when he is trying to "grab" something to say.

I was aware of the overload of senses but I didn't realize that the floors could be tilting for him. That must be why he touches the wall here and there trying to get some balance.

I thought that the author really conveyed how regular people can hurt people with autism's feelings. I knew that from being with my brother. I have heard people talk about my brother in front of him and that is mean. I know the author would feel the same way.

This book is very valuable for understanding autism and I wish that caregivers in group homes and others who work with people who have autism would read this book.

When I read this book, I truly wanted more. I am hoping that there will be a place in the future where we can send out questions to you. I have so much more that I want to learn. If you have a family member who has autism please read this book.

I received this book as a win from FirstReads but that in no way influenced my thoughts or feelings in the review.

I can't speak highly enough about this book. For ...
By Roy Larke
I can't speak highly enough about this book. For any parent with a child with autism, reading the pages written so painstakingly by Higashida will bring insight and understanding. We bought multiple copies to distribute to teachers and carers as a result. Chapters are short and answer specific questions about behaviour and thinking. It demonstrates that not everything you see through "normal" eyes is inexplicable or even "abnormal" and that it is the point of view that is often wrong. This book explains this thinking succinctly and wth considerable charm and elegance. It is also written from the heart.

David Mitchell should be commended for bringing the book to the English language. He's a master of language and writing in any case (if you haven't read 'Bone Clocks' yet, let alone Cloud Atlas, grab them now!), but more than the style, which is simple, straightforward and thoroughly meaningful, it is the practicality of this book that is so important. It's a tool that anyone connect to the care of people with Autism should read and use.

Fantastic book with tons of helpful information for those who live, work or around people on the spectrum.
By connie
I work with students with Autisum. I found this book very helpful coming from someone who lives it daily. Some of what the author had written I already used with these beautiful people. After working with students who are on the spectrum for 20 years, I even found helpful information that I wasn't doing. I passed the book around with all that work in my program. Each one of us found this helpful and feel everyone that works with people on the spectrum need to read this book. Thank-you!

Flight: My Life in Mission Control, by Christopher Kraft

The Right Stuff meets Rocket Boys in this gripping memoir by the man who helped create some of the greatest moments in U.S. space history.

NASA flight director Chris Kraft takes readers behind the scenes of the U.S. space program to deliver an unforgettable account of his life in Mission Control. One of our early space pioneers, Kraft emerged from a boyhood in small-town America to become a visionary whose energy and commitment would lead to the creation of our nation's most daring space programs. It's all here, from the legendary Mercury missions that first sent Americans into space through the Gemini and Apollo missions that landed them on the moon. The great heroes of space are here, too-Alan Shepard, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell, and Buzz Aldrin-leading the space race that would change the course of U.S history.

From its infancy to its glory days, from near-disasters to astonishing triumphs . . . from the stunning gambles to the pure luck that accompanied each mission, Flight relives the spellbinding moments and events that captured the imagination of the world. It is a stirring tribute to the U.S. space program and to the men who risked their lives to take America on a flight into the unknown-from the man who was there for it all.

Amazon.com Review
On July 20, 1969, near the end of a great decade of near-space exploration, a small craft called Eagle landed on the moon's surface. As anyone who watched the televised broadcast of the landing might recall, the astronauts aboard Eagle were guided to their objective by a capable ground crew headed by Chris Kraft, whom his colleagues had long called "Flight." Kraft was unflappable on the surface, but, as he writes in this memoir, the Eagle's landing had moments of drama that gave him pause, and that few outside NASA knew about--including baleful alarms from the ship's on-board computer that warned of imminent disaster.

For Kraft, frightening moments were part of his job as director of Mission Control. He encountered many of them in the early years of the space program, when failures were commonplace and all too often caused not by mechanics but by politics. We learn of many in Kraft's pages. One such failure was the Soviet Union's Sputnik launch, about which Kraft thunders, "We should have beaten them.... We were stopped by anonymous doctors in the civilian world who didn't know what they were talking about, by a bureaucrat in the White House who'd been stung when JFK shot down his position on manned space flight, and by our friend the German rocket scientist, who got cold feet when he should have been bold."

Plenty of other contemporaries, including John Glenn and Richard Nixon, come in for a scolding in Kraft's fiery account, which offers a rare insider's portrait of the challenging work of astronautics--work that, Kraft writes hopefully, is only beginning. --Gregory McNamee

From Booklist
Besides the astronauts, Kraft was one of NASA's best-known personalities in the agency's heroic decade of the 1960s, once making the cover of Time. The blunt-speaking demeanor that made Kraft popular with the press is fully present in his memoir, in which he lets fly about various instances of his dissatisfaction with the performance of an astronaut, engineer, or contractor. Such dirty-laundry airing, verboten at the time by the publicity-conscious NASA, is one reason for space-history buffs to flock to Kraft's narrative, but the principal attraction is how he ramped up from scratch the flight control operation for Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. When Sputnik beeped the U.S. into a panic, Kraft was an engineer at the obscure National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), quickly revamped as NASA. Tapped by the unsung organizer of manned flight, Robert Gilruth, to establish what became Mission Control, Kraft directed the early flights, whose participants he critiques by his lights as a no-nonsense engineer. His key role and frankness of recollection make Kraft a worthy memoirist of pioneering space flight. Gilbert Taylor

One of the Best Books Ever about the Space Program
By John R. Keller
While I really liked Gene Kranz's book on his experiences in Mission Control and felt that his was a five star book, Chris Kraft's book is orders of magnitude better. Chris Kraft describes in great detail his career at NASA, its predecessor NACA and all the people involved in setting up mission control and getting America to the Moon. He tells it like it was and he's not afraid to criticize (or praise) the many players within NASA and its contractors. Through out the book, the reader gets the impression that Kraft truly enjoyed his job, even with the 70 to 80 hour weeks, and believes in the dream of exploring the solar system and the universe.
The book begins with Kraft's childhood on the Virginia shores of the Atlantic and the factors that ultimately shaped his future. Due to a childhood accident he is unable to fight in World War II and instead ends up becoming an engineer at NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) helping to solve aerodynamic problems of many aircraft. At NACA he distinguishes himself by solving many complex flight problems, some of which are still used today. It is here that he meets many of the people who will become the driving force behind the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, such as Walt Williams and Bob Gilruth. Once the Russians launch Sputnik, he becomes one of a select few of 36 people who form the Space Task Group. This group becomes the core of all manned space flight projects up to the Space Shuttle program. This group developed the Mercury capsule, mission control and selected the Original Seven astronauts. He becomes the Flight Director for the Mercury program and part of the Gemini program. As the space program expands, the group grows quite large and moves to Houston, TX to form the Manned Spacecraft Center (now the Johnson Space Center). Mid-way through the Gemini program he gives up his position as a Flight Director and worked on getting Apollo to the moon.
So much has been written about the Apollo missions to the Moon, that this book was a breath of fresh air. Approximately half of this book is devoted to the Mercury and Gemini programs and how these often ignored projects played an extremely important role in getting America to the Moon. This book is loaded many great nuggets about the space program and Kraft's life. For example, he helps subdue a hijacker, he's one of only a few that criticizes Wernher Von Braun (and not for his Nazi past) and several of the Original Mercury Seven Astronauts and tells how and why Neil Armstrong was selected to be the first man on the moon. But all in all, Kraft continually points out that it was teamwork that got the space program over many hurdles and to the moon. Those who were not non-team players, such as Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter, were eventually eased out of the program.
It is important to note that all the proceeds from this book go to a college scholarship fund for the children of Johnson Space Center employees.

A bit too critical
By John McGaughey
I just read this book and being interested in space history was happy with the inside details that keep this from being another dry political history work. I was only dissapointed by one section. Chapter ten was a very emotional attack on astronaut Scott Carpenter's Mercury flight. I understand the authors upset at Scott Carpenters performance during the mission but he does cross the line into a bit of a vendetta mode against him. On page 173 he states "Scott Carpenter was our bad example. He had slipped through the process without a college degree and virtually no test pilot experiance." This is not accurate. NASA's own astronaut biography page shows he graduated in 1949 with a B.S. in aerospace engineering from The University of Colorado. He was a Naval officer and an aviator and they did not take non degreed candidates as pilots then in the Navy. No, he did not fly test planes but he was a pilot and that was not a trivial training regiment to get through. In addition NASA's qualifications for astronauts demanded a degree in science or engineering so how would he have squeeked past that check? Also he must have had something on the ball to have been selected for project Mercury over many other candidates. This is a good book but the attack here seems to be a personal trashing that does make you a bit suspicious of other passages that are not so easy to check out.

A quality work from NASA's first Flight Director
By Tyler Peterson
Christopher Columbus Kraft, Jr., was one of the key players behind the beginnings of what was to become the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Through this book he details his experiences through NASA's predecessor, the NACA, where he and other engineers and technicians tested aircraft and flight hardware. Then he became one of the original members of the Space Task Group, which helped to organize America's first manned space efforts. It is clear through his retelling of this period that the STG's efforts to put the first human in space was truly a "crash program," and its members had to learn by doing. Kraft's work in designing mission control also was very important, becaue of course the mission control center has become the backbone of America's human spaceflight program ever since its beginnings. As the book continues, Kraft is candid and clear in the description of his involvement in the race to the moon-he describes his elation at Alan Shepard's fifteen minute suborbital flight, and his frustration at Scott Carpenter's subpar performance on the second Mercury orbital flight in May 1962. The book provides many of his experiences and thoughts in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs as NASA gained more experience in sending astronauts into orbit, and eventually as Neil A. Armstrong stepped from the lunar module Eagle and onto the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969. I've read both this book and Failure is Not An Option, by Apollo flight director Gene Kranz, and while both books are good, I think this one is better written and more candid.

The Art of Strategy: A Game Theorist's Guide to Success in Business and Life, by Avinash K. Dixit, Barry J. Nalebuff

“I am hard pressed to think of another book that can match the combination of practical insights and reading enjoyment.”―Steven Levitt

Game theory means rigorous strategic thinking. It’s the art of anticipating your opponent’s next moves, knowing full well that your rival is trying to do the same thing to you. Though parts of game theory involve simple common sense, much is counterintuitive, and it can only be mastered by developing a new way of seeing the world. Using a diverse array of rich case studies―from pop culture, TV, movies, sports, politics, and history―the authors show how nearly every business and personal interaction has a game-theory component to it. Mastering game theory will make you more successful in business and life, and this lively book is the key to that mastery.

"It is an easy read and is written in a lively tone-which is not something I particularly recall from my lectures in the 1980s. Long live economics!" John Burns, The Times Higher Education "Unlike most of the ranks of management advice books which pad out bookshop business sections, here is one which is rigorous, fun and extremely useful all at the same time." The Economist

Buy "Thinking Strategically"
By J. Kim
Of course. It is an updated version of their best selling book [Thinking Strategically]. I have taught an introduction to Game Theory course to college undergraduates for years and used their earlier version "Thinking strategically" as a textbook. Nalebuff and Dixit's effort on updating their classic became less than good news to college students. They put too much materials about their ABC documentary which was taken under Dr. Nalebuff's guidance while trying to put too much materials in otherwise a simple-clear book. I strongly recommend you to go to the bookstore and buy their earlier version "thinking strategically" rather than this 'confusing/messy" version.

Unnecessary after "Thinking Strategically"
By Kara
There is absolutely no need to read this book if you've read Thinking Strategically: The Competitive Edge in Business, Politics, and Everyday Life.

I'm not certain why they exist as two separate books. The content is almost identical, and 90% of the examples in this one were lifted from that. I have no idea why this is touted as a "sequel." It is not. It's just Thinking Strategically repackaged (but I will say that its package is prettier). The tagline says that it's a "guide to success in business and life," but it is not. It is game theory explained in an accessible way.

I love game theory. I studied economics in college, and game theory had been my favorite class. I enjoyed Thinking Strategically and looked forward to reading this one. I was disappointed. Had I not read Thinking Strategically, I probably would have found this enjoyable, but I'm giving it two stars for the false advertising.

A masterpiece
By ServantofGod
This is simply one of the best books I had read on either game theory or strategy. It's so well written and organized in layman terms with so many great stories/examples that all who care to read only 50+ pages will learn much from it. In short, highly recommended (at least for those who had not read the authors' previous work before per warning of other reviewers)!

p.s. Below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference.

What makes something a game: you have to take into account the objectives and strategies of the other players. When guessing a number picked at random, the number isn't trying to hide. You can take the engineer's mindset and divide the interval in two and do the best possible. But if you are playing a game, then you have to consider how the other player will be acting and how those decisions will influence your strategy. Pg6
Sailboat racing offers the chance to observe an interesting reversal of a "follow the leader" strategy. The leading sailboat usually copies the strategy of the trailing boat. When the follower racks, so does the leader. The imitates the follower even when the follower is clearly pursuing a poor strategy. Why? Because in sailboat racing close doesn't count: only winning matters. |If you have the lead. The surest way to stay ahead is to play monkey see, monkey do. Stock market analysts and economic forecasters are not immune to this copycat strategy. The leader forecasters have an incentive to follow the pack and produce predictions similar to everyone else's. This way people are unlikely to change their perception of these forecasters' abilities. On the other hand, new comers take the risky strategies; they tend to predict boom or doom. Usually they are wrong and are never heard of again but now and again they are proven correct and move to the ranks of the famous. pg11
In poker, player battle this paradox when it comes to raising the stakes. If a player bets only when he ahs a strong hand, the other players will soon figure this out. In response to a raise, most other players will fold, and he'll never win a big pot. Those who raise back will have even stronger hands, and so our poor player will end up a big loser. To get others to bet against a strong hand, they have to think you might be bluffing. To convince them of this possibility, it helps to bet often enough so that you must be bluffing some of the time. This leads to an interesting dilemma. You'd like others to fold against your bluffs and thereby win with weak hands. But that won't lead to high pot victories. To convince others to raise your bets, you also need to get caught bluffing. pg24
A critical lesson in game theory: You need to understand the other player's perspective. You need to consider what they know, what motivates them, and even how they think about you. George Bernard Shaw's quip on the golden rule was to not do unto others as you would have them do unto you - their tastes may be different. When thinking strategically, you have to work extra hard to understand the perspective and interactions of all the other players in the game, including ones who may be silent. That brings us to one last point. You may be thinking you are playing one game, but it is only part of a larger game. There is always a larger game. Pg28
If you have to take some risks, it is often better to do so as quickly as possible. This is obvious to those who play tennis....That way, if you fail on your first attempt, the game won't be over. You may still have time to take some other options that can bring you back to or even ahead of where you were. The wisdom of taking risks early applies to most aspects of life, whether it be career choices, investments, or dating. Pg63
