Brian L. Ott is Associate Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado Denver. He is the author of The Small Screen: How Television Equips Us to Live in the Information Age (Wiley Blackwell, 2007) and co-editor of It's Not TV: Watching HBO in the Post-Television Era (2008).

Robert L. Mack is a PhD candidate in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. His writing has appeared in The Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts and The Journal of GLBT Family Studies.

This is an excellent textbook, the best I have read in a while on media studies. I was put off at the beginning by the sequence of short introductory essays on Freud, McLuhan, pragmatism, etc., but after working through all the chapters I am actually impressed by the range of the authors' reach, and the quality of some of the introductions. It would be a good book to teach from, as each chapter is a different layer or approach that is very user-friendly. A very, very important element of this book is the fine presentation of the statistics on viewership and ownership, statistics that are hard to find in one place. That is what drew me to the book in the first place, and the rest was originally just a bonus. Another special aspect of this book is that it has very strong sections on feminism, queer theory, and various forms of eroticism as critical tools. The sections on fan fiction and prosumerism were excellent.

There could perhaps have been more discussion of how to "close read" a visual text -- some of the appendicized essays do some of that -- my experience is that students are simultaneously sophisticated about the analysis of content, and unskilled in the analysis of form and technical details.

The only serious drawback of the book is that it is relentlessly American -- although decent reference is made to the British school of cultural studies, virtually all the examples are American movies and TV. Foreign media hardly exist. On the other hand, the examples used are very good, and fairly up to date (e.g. Family Guy, Walking Dead, reality shows, etc.).

Another little bonus (speaking as toronto) was the discussion of Toronto's early role in critical media studies (Innis, McLuhan, Ong). The book doesn't mention the fact that one of the great supports for this work was the CBC, a public broadcaster that (in those days) had extraordinary creative moments. And Edmund Carpenter should have received a mention as the originator of several of McLuhan's notions of acoustic space.

I liked the Kindle version so much that I bought a text version for future reference (oh yes, and the references are terrific).

A very readable textbook

I assigned this fine book in a class for the first time this semester (Fall, 2014), and it has worked quite well. The authors are especially good at explaining complex theoretical orientations in the field of media studies. It's accessible and engaging, and not at all simplistic. I would recommend this textbook to others who teach communication theory, cultural studies, media criticism, etc.

About the Author
Agatha Christie was born in Torquay in 1890 and became, quite simply, the best-selling novelist in history. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, written towards the end of the First World War, introduced us to Hercule Poirot, who was to become the most popular detective in crime fiction since Sherlock Holmes. She is known throughout the world as the Queen of Crime. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in over 100 foreign countries. She is the author of 80 crime novels and short story collections, 19 plays, and six novels under the name of Mary Westmacott.

Holly Jolly Mysteries Abound in Merry Olde England

Agatha Christie serves up mayhem in six well-plotted stories. Originally released in 1960 at a time when an annual "Christie for Christmas" had become an anticipated tradition for the reading public, the famous author broke with tradition and gave readers a novella length new Poirot tale which was used for the title and combined it with four older Poirot stories and one older Miss Marple story.

"The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding," according to the author's own foreword, recalls the pleasurable Christmases of her own at her brother-in-law's home (Abney Hall) in the north of England. Christie was enchanted by huge country house Christmases that included stockings at the bed in the morning, the Church service with all the Christmas hymns, a dinner of gargantuan proportions, presents, and the final Lighting of the Tree. Even in her older years, this was still a wonderful memory to her so she dedicated this book to the hostess who gave her such fond memories. In this tale Poirot experiences these same treats as he pursues a red ruby stolen by a young woman who has stolen it and the affections of a prince betrothed to a woman in his own country. In a secondary plot, the master sleuth also manages to intervene in the romance of his host's granddaughter and avert a practical joke in the form of a mock murder.

"The Mystery of the Spanish Chest," is a longer version of "The Mystery of the Baghdad Chest," originally published in 1939. In this Poirot and his erstwhile companion Hastings become involved in the murder of a man whose stabbed body is found stuffed inside the elaborate chest of a man rumored to be the lover of the dead man's wife.

"The Under Dog," originally published in 1951, concerns Lily Margrave, paid companion to Lady Astwell. She seeks Poirot's help in solving the murder of her employer's husband who has been killed in the tower of his estate. Though all circumstances point to a nephew who has argued with the deceased, the widow is sure someone else killed her husband.

"Four and Twenty Blackbirds," originally published in 1950, is the tale of a murder concerning eating habits. While dining one evening, Poirot notices a lone man whom he discovers has been eating at this restaurant every Tuesday and Thursday night for a decade. When he learns the diner came in on Monday night the week before, his little gray cells are activated and he is soon on the trail of a murder.

"The Dream," originally published in 1939, features a reclusive and eccentric millionaire who summons Poirot to his home to interpret his recurring nightmare of committing suicide. An usual request for the dapper detective, but one which he handles with aplomb.

"Greenshaw's Folly" had appeared previously in a magazine in 1957 but this is its first publication in book form. It is also the lone Miss Marple story in this collection. Raymond West, Miss Marple's novelist nephew, is travelling with a literary critic whose hobby is collecting architectural monstrosities on film. The two visit Greenshaw's Folly, a hideous Victorian mansion now occupied by Miss Greenshaw, a spinster who is the last of the Greenshaw family. West arranges for his wife's niece to help Miss Greenshaw edit her grandfather's diaries and while doing so, the niece witnesses the brutal murder-by-arrow of Miss Greenshaw. The gardener, an avid archery buff, is accused, but it will take Miss Marple's acute perceptions of people to solve this murder.

"Don't Eat None of the Plum Pudding..."

"The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding" may not be the most auspicious title for an Agatha Christie novel, particularly when one takes into account her tendency for high body counts and gory deaths, but the subtitle "and a selection of entrees" reveals Christie's intentions for this particular short-story anthology. "Christmas Pudding" is just a bit of fun, dedicated to the memory of her Christmases spent as a child at her brother-in-law's house.

The six stories here are long enough to be described as novellas, with the first five starring Christie's most famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and the sixth featuring her spinster sleuth Miss Jane Marple. All the stories are vintage Christie, though they contain more of a romantic air this time around, with stories that feature stolen rubies, Spanish chests, precognitive dreams, hypnotism, tower rooms, and old run-down estates.

In "The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding" Hercule Poirot is called away from his cozy winter apartment in order to spend Christmas with the Lacey family. The police have reason to believe that the priceless ruby, stolen from a foolish Indian prince, will turn up in this particular household. Begrudgingly, Poirot accepts the invitation and is introduced to the Lacey family - which includes a group of children who plan a "murder" for their guest. It doesn't take a stroke of genius to guess where the missing ruby ends up. All that Poirot has to deduce is how it got there, and how the children can help in the capture of the culprit.

"The Mystery of the Spanish Chest" deals with the gruesome discovery of a body inside the titular chest. Mr Clayton was stabled to death at some point during a soiree taking place at Major Rich's apartment, at the same time he was meant to have been called away to Scotland on business. All the evidence points to Major Rich, especially since he's in love with Mr Clayton's beautiful wife Margharita - but Poirot is not so convinced he's the murderer. Perhaps Shakespeare's "Othello" holds the key...

A lady's companion's reluctance in summoning Poirot to a murder scene only piques his interest in the case, and he travels to the house of the Astwells to investigate the death of the bad-tempered Sir Rueben Astwell. Once again, there is a suspect to whom all the evidence points, but the victim's wife insists that it was her husband's secretary that is responsible - her intuition is never wrong! But the case itself seems clueless, and Poirot has to resort to several psychological games in order to unearth the murderer.

"Four and Twenty Blackbirds" and "The Dream" are the two shortest stories in the anthology, and the most simplistic. In the first Poirot is intrigued over the tale of a long-time patron at a certain restaurant suddenly changing his dinner order for no discernable reason, something casts suspicion over his death a few days later; in the latter Poirot is summoned to a wealthy businessman's office in order to discuss the precognitive power of dreams. Benedict Farley has been having a reoccurring dream each night in which he shoots himself in the head at exactly twenty-eight minutes past three. Poirot is at a loss to explain the phenomena to his client, but sure enough, Mr Farley commits suicide just a few days later. Did the dream come true, or was something even more sinister at work?

Finally, "Greenshaw's Folly" moves from Mr Poirot to Miss Marple. Whilst staying with her nephew Raymond West, Miss Marple gets a secondhand account from his wife of the strange occurrences at Greenshaw's Folly, the ramshackle old estate that bankrupted its original owner. With something of a turf war going on between the housekeeper and the gardening boy, Mrs West tries to keep her head down as she organizes old Mrs Greenshaw's memoirs. To her horror she is witness to the old woman's murder, watching helplessly from within a locked room as Mrs Greenshaw is shot dead with an arrow. All possible suspects have an alibi - so whodunit?

These are not Christie's finest by any means. The culprit of "Christmas Pudding" is so obvious that it becomes a case of how rather than who, and Miss Marple's solution to "Greenshaw" seems to have been pulled out of a hat. But you can tell that Christie had a lot of fun with these particular mysteries, especially the first, where the warmth and fun of a typical English Christmas has been drawn straight out of her own memories. There are numerous cameos from various side-characters, including Miss Lemon the efficient secretary, George the devoted manservant, Raymond West the successful novelist and Doctor Stillingfleet (who pops up again in Third Girl), and because of the relative simplicity of the plots, many readers may find that Christie is unable to pull a fast one on them - so long as they pay careful attention to the clues.

Another brilliant book

This book is well worth reading if you are a fan of Agatha Christies, Hercule Poirot. Poirots first taste of a traditional English Christmas ends in him solving the disappearance of a Princes ruby. After recieving a sinister note warning him not to eat the Christmas Pudding, a mysterious visitor in the night and his host nearly choking on the Christmas Pudding he sets a trap for his suspect and a joke on the children of the household. Not only in this story does Poirot retrieve a stolen ruby but he also helps his hosts to rid themselves of a problem of their own. This is a brilliant book and well worth the read.

I became a big fan of Caruso St. John after I read this book. I admire their defiant spirit against trend of temporal showmanship. Like a sculpture piece their works carving thru context with sensitive rigor, which enhanced the quality of its surrounding without conforming.
I highly recommend it if you too are searching for a breath of fresh air in architecture.

Simple and clear approach with a good structure

I purchased the kindle version, I'm at 40% of the book when I'm writing this review, I haven't read other Cisco voice books so I can't make a comparison.

Pros:
1- Jeremy's way of explaining is very simple and clear, I have 7 years telecom experience with fixed and mobile networks and decided to move into the SIP world, and was curious how Jeremy will explain the legacy network section, I don't think it can be done simpler than the way he explains it.
2- The book structure is very good, you can build up the full picture through the chapters even if you have no knowledge with the world of Cisco voice (which I didn't have).
3- The amount of information about each part is adequate, written in a short way, and the writer doesn't get you lost into deep details, which is the way I prefer, maybe other readers prefer the long detailed way!?

cons:
1- Pictures are small, I'm reading on a 24inch monitor and can't read many snapshots' contents easily, full page should be used instead for several pictures to make it easy to read.
2- No page numbers, this is common in many kindle books, a percentage is used instead.
3- The CD provided with the printed version of the book is not available with the kindle edition, I believe its very easy for the publisher to arrange with Amazon to provide a download link along with a username/password for each client purchases the ebook version.

One of the best Cisco Press books I've read

I've written less than 5 online reviews ever, which makes me more of a taker than contributor to the online world, since I rely heavily on reviews for purchasing decisions.... but this book is worth reviewing. I have my CCNA, CCNP, CCNA Security and CCNP Security, now I am working on my CCNA Voice - this is the best Cisco press book I have ever read aside from the CCNP Route book written by Wendell Odom. It has a great balance of technical information and practical explanations that tie everything together very welland make learning more linear, rather than flipping back and fourth. This book also has personality and witty humor, which is so rare in technical books. The author's passion really shows through and makes this book, dangerously close to a very enjoyable read.

Will not prepare you for the exam

I found this book very easy to read and full of good information, but ultimately this book did not prepare me for the exam. I read this book cover to cover twice and there were questions on the exam that were NOWHERE in this book. Specifically questions on ISDN configurations, CUPC setup, and questions about the difference between various protocols. Though the book references protocols such as MGCP, H.323, etc, it does not actually explain what they do or what differentiates them from the rest. Essentially, without several other study aids and my own lab, I never would have passed the test if I had relied on this book alone.

If you are looking to get in to the world of VoIP, this is a good start, but be mindful that you will need other study material if you plan on taking the CCNA Voice exam.

After finishing Love Beyond Time, I knew that the story had to continue. Arran and Blaire had to get their story told. Blaire's character is so saucy that I loved writing her. Elements of her character are definitely taken from someone close to me (you know who you are). Arran was also very fun to write. The good "bad" boy is always fun to explore. It is my hope that you enjoy this story as much as Love Beyond Time.�Next, Adelle's story continues in A Conall Christmas. I hope you decide to read it also.

Disappointed

I read the first book and enjoyed it. I was intrigued by the way Arran and Blair were left in that earlier book so I hurriedly bought this one. Unhappily I did not like this one as much.
Let me start out by saying that Bethany Claire is a talented writer. She tells a story well and her editing is excellent. And in the end this is after all her book and she can tell the story any way she wants. There are many who will probably enjoy this book. However this review is my opinion so take it as such.
This wasn't a romance. It was a thwarted love story. It was filled with a lot of story but not much of it between the main characters. I didn't really get to know them or see them together enough.
The plot held so many problems they had to overcome. As I read farther new ones kept being added. I keep saying "Are you kidding me?" It didn't enhance the story but it did add to my frustration.
***SPOILERS ALERT***
I do NOT find the hero of our story marrying and having sex with another woman romantic. I don't care if he is thinking of our heroine while he beds his new wife. Ewww. It did not promote romance or tragedy or whatever Ms.Claire was going for.
The plot ploy of almost having Blair marry Arren' s cousin also annoyed me. I mean really? Down to the wire, on the heels of Edana dying, I couldn't take it. Hated it. Now we have a saddened, hurt man jilted minutes before his wedding. Thanks, just what I don't need in this unfulfilling love story.
As I've stated, these are only my opinions but they are my honest opinions. I want to read a book that brings me enjoyment. This one didn't. No matter how well crafted if I don't like it, I feel like I've wasted my time and money. There are 2 remaining books in this series. I don't know if I trust this writer to deliver romances. I don't want to be wrung out until the very end waiting for crumbs of the love part of the story.
It does have a happy ending for our 2 main characters. Kudos because I really hate cliff hangers. It wasn't a high level of stressful angst but I still didn't like it. Sorry that's just how I feel.

Very disappointed after reading the first book (contains spoilers)

I absolutely loved the first book, which was why I was so shocked to find that I hated this one. I was so disappointed with the amount of infidelity that occurred in this book.

In part of the book, Bri ends up returning to the present for a short time and discovers that her best friends new husband is cheating on her. She doesn't bother telling her friend, instead only hopes that she finds out sometime during their marriage. In my opinion, that was a really crummy thing to do and lowered my estimation of Bri's character considerably.

As for the hero of this book, I thought him to be a terrible person. He ends up in a marriage of convenience, because he thinks that he cannot have Blaire as his wife. Blair comes back to the past and confesses her love to him, only to find out that he has already married another. He decides to start cheating on his wife with Blaire. He takes Blaire's virginity and essentially makes her his mistress on the side until he finds out his wife if pregnant, then casts Blaire aside to become an honorable husband and father.

In another of their love scenes (while he's having sex with Blaire) he proceeds to talk about all of his previous conquests and what he did with them in bed.

Overall I thought he lacked with very little honor towards both Blaire and his wife. I expected more after the first book.

I also have to add that I was disappointed in Blaire's behavior and reactions to "the love of her life" and his total disregard for her and his wife. I expect more from my heroines.

Highly recommended by someone who never reads UNTIL NOW

We've all been in some type of love scenario where for some reason or another, the situation feels hopeless. That's exactly the case for Blaire and Arran. This romantic novel showcases real, relateable heartbreak, and takes you (as the reader) through a series of emotional ups and downs with the characters. The author is able to make a sexy, Scottish, time-traveling romance novel feel somehow like it could still be a reality! The twists and turns in the plot will have you wondering and reading so fast, because you never know what will come next. Book 2 of Bethany Claire's Morna's Legacy Series has all the same elements that made Book 1 amazing: great character development, non-cheesy romance, a rich plot and the sexiest Scottish men. However, the best part of this seemingly hopeless love story is the way it ends!
