A look at what might have been

most of these are not really secret projects, just designs that never made it past the mockup stage, but an interesting look at how some of the late 20th century's most famous fighters might have looked if things had gone differently. What if the Navy had ordered a swing-wing variant of the F-4 phantom?, what If Grumman had went with the fixed wing design for their G-303 (F-14 Tomcat)?, what if Vought or Boeing had built the F-16?, what if the Navy had bought a Navalised F-16 instead of the YF-17 (F/A-18)? see what an F-15 with wide spaced engines & blended wing-body would have looked like if LTV had won.

Endlessly fascinating!

I am very much a "What If" sort of airplane buff, so I love prototypes. (You should see the 48th scale Republic F-91 Thunderceptor kit I built with Air National Guard markings and nuclear-tipped Genie missiles...). But this book goes FAR beyond prototypes into the world of the never-built.

It's fascinating to see, for example, the designs that the never got off the drawing board, beaten out by what would become the Century Series. Or to see what the competitors looked like in the competition that was won by the F-16. If you like this sort of thing, you won;t put this book down until you've read the whole thing in one day. Then you'll read it again...

I could write the exact same review about all of the other books in this series.

About the Author
From modest beginnings in Mumbai s Grant Road, surrounded by the energy and unbridled potential of a country always on the verge of greatness, Ronnie Screwvala is a first-generation entrepreneur.

His early days, in front of the camera and on stage, inspired him to pioneer cable TV in India, and build one of the largest toothbrush manufacturing operations before starting UTV, a media and entertainment conglomerate spanning television, digital content, mobile, broadcasting, games and motion pictures, which he divested to The Walt Disney Company in 2012.

Newsweek termed him the Jack Warner of India, Esquire rated him as one of the 75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century and Fortune as Asia s 25 Most Powerful.

On to his second innings, Ronnie is driven by his interest in championing entrepreneurship in India, and is focused on building his next set of ground-up businesses in high growth and impact sectors. His more recent commitment to being a first mover in sports has made him lend his support to kabaddi and football.

He is passionate about social welfare and, with his wife Zarina and through their Swades Foundation, has given single-minded focus to empowering one million lives in rural India every 5-6 years through a unique 360-degree model.

In this golden age of civilization we have so many advances around us. However we sometimes tend to hold on to naysayers that the best has passed.
In Dream with your Eyes Open by Ronnie Screwvala, you learn his story. Not one that is a chest thumping that he did it his way, but an example that you can do it your way.
Indian entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala serves as a testament to the fighting spirit of business. He chronicles his lessons learned. In the end of the book is a helpful question and answer section that sets the course for those who want to pick his brain.
Never ever give up to your dreams and as the title illustrates, dream with your eyes open.

Candid view from an entrepreneurs' cockpit

Loved every bit of the book as it traversed across all issues an entrepreneur is bound to encounter and overcome. Some of the philosophical thoughts don't gel with the thought process Ronnie is trying to make but it's fine as we as readers are human and empathy, philosophy and sentiment are part of us

All in all, a wonderful read for all budding entrepreneurs like me. A worthy book to be on that top shelf of our book shelves

Ronnie Screwala has given us a wonderful view of a 'start up' in the media world. How persistency pays, adhering to correct values is so important, team building with the right dose of empathy is the driver of the business and spotting trends & consequent,brand building - it's heart. All this laced with suitable examples from his own experiences with UTV. Loved the book for the many tips it has for any entrepreneur's journey.

About the Author
Christian Briggs is working on a Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction and Complex Systems at the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing, where he occasionally teaches courses in new media theory. His research focuses primarily on how people get things done in organizations using digital technology together. Christian previously worked in various creative, management and consultative roles for Palladium Group, Ziff Davis Interactive, Surfwatch, Walt Disney Imagineering, One to One Interactive and Walmart. Christian co-founded SociaLens in 2009 to provide research, training and consulting to help organizations to thrive in the digital age. Kevin Makice is a co-founder of SociaLens and a Ph.D. candidate at the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing. His past research is eclectic, including political wikis, tangible interfaces for children’s games, machinima, and network analysis of ball movement in basketball. In 2009, Kevin authored the first technical book about Twitter, Twitter API: Up and Running, published by O’Reilly Media. Kevin is a contributor to Wired's GeekDad blog. Larry Buchanan is a freelance illustrator and designer. He graduated from Indiana University in 2011 with a degree in journalism and a concentration in fine art. While in school, Buchanan was named student designer of the year by the Society of News Design and Indiana Collegiate Journalist of the Year by the Indiana Collegiate Press Association. He illustrates a bi-weekly visual column for McSweeney's Internet Tendency about being a recent college graduate and still living in a college town. He lives in a little log cabin in just south of IU's campus with his wife Erin (who copy edited this book) and their dog and cat.

This book is a practical guide to building digital fluency among individuals in organizations. At Last it's finally here!

Makice and Briggs are two very bright guys. I am so pleased to see the final version of their work in print form. I reviewed the work in progress material about 6 months ago and thought it was brilliant. The final version available here is even better. Having worked in business for 25 years I can really see the value that these ideas will bring to businesses. As a marketing educator and researcher I think many of these concepts will be standard material in marketing communication courses prospectively. Enjoy.

Comprehensive but easy to digest

This book has a lot of great content to explain the concept of digital fluency, which is becoming so important to any industry today. I found multiple sections and topics that I will quote and refer to in my everyday work in digital media. However, what makes this specific book so powerful is actually that it is not so academic that it cannot be used as a guide. People throughout the "spectrum" of digital literacy and fluency can glean powerful info, both to enhance their own knowledge and to better understand their clients and colleagues. The engaging content is supplemented by summaries and interactive features and snippets that can be used on the fly. I am excited to use, share, gift and cite this book in a variety of settings.
