POWERFUL, CHALLENGING, EXCITING

I have never done an LGAT like est or Landmark Forum, though I have read some of their concepts and found them interesting. There was too much other, negative material to entice me into those programs. This book, however, puts forth what I understand to be the core teachings of those organizations, and I have found them powerful, challenging, exciting beyond belief. I disagree with the reviewer who thinks that you have to have had est training or the like to understand this book. It is written clearly, Ms. Goss defines all her jargon concisely, and she gets right to the heart of the matter of transformation (as opposed to change - a great distinction.) It is the best "self-help" book I have ever read and I highly recommend it far beyond the boundaries of business re-invention. As an artist, I found her concepts liberating, and as a person I truly do feel that I am in the process of transforming myself. And on top of all that, it coasts less than a tenth of the Landmark Forum Weekend seminar! My only complaint is that the book doesn't list discussion groups based around the information contained inside. Perhaps I'll have to go to an est or Forum site to have conversations about it...but I can't say enough about it.

This book is the BEST

This book, and Steve Chandler's "17 Lies", would be the only two books you would ever need in your life if you wanted to learn how to be both POWERFUL and very, very happy. Tracy Goss succeeds in doing what no one thought could be done.....she has taken the MOST useful and exciting teaching from the Landmark Forum and made it accessible to everyone in this fine, fine, book. Werner Erhard should be very proud of this. Her book shows you EXACTLY how to reinvent yourself, anywhere, any time, no matter what your past history was. She shows you how to gracefully step outside of all past influences on your current life and reinvent yourself anew ANY WAY YOU WANT TO BE. Most self-help books cheer you on, but don't tell you exactly what to do. Tracy Goss does it all. Read carefully, read slowly, read as if you had a life-threatening disease and THIS was the cure.

Perfect for EST & Forum graduates

Tracy Goss has long been closely associated with Werner Erhard, the originator of EST and Landmark Education Corporation's Forum. I expect happy graduates of those programs to be very happy with this book (I am and I am). The book presents the central concepts of those programs very clearly and in a format designed to help business people put the "distinctions" to work immediately. I doubt, however, that a person not trained by the author or another of Mr. Erhard's colleagues could get much sense from these pages. It can seem to be merely jargon and wild promises unless you have actually put the techniques to work for yourself with the assistance of a coach.
For people experienced with the methods, this book is an effective refresher and spur to action. A friend and I read the book at about the same time and immediately formed a mutual support program employing its ideas, along with structures from the courses I teach. We are getting exciting results. I recommend the book to anyone eager to transform their lives from survival to adventure.

Inner Sea NPC Codex

The Inner Sea NPC Codex features 55 characters strongly tied to Golarion (The Pathfinder world), whereas the original NPC codex was pretty setting neutral. If you are looking for a stack of NPCs, I recommend the original "Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: NPC Codex" as it has over 300 NPCs. If you are looking for Golarion specific NPCs, this is your book (64 page paperback).

None of the statblocks in this book are for specific characters, but rather generic members of different Inner Sea associations. Each NPC has a page or 2, a picture, full stat blocks with gear, and a rundown of the NPCs affiliation. The NPC codex does reference many other books with page numbers, but most of the referenced information can be located on Paizo's PRD. Below is a list of the NPCs and their Class/Level.

About the Author

Nathan Myhrvold, founder of The Cooking Lab, coauthor of Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking and Modernist Cuisine at Home, and author of The Photography of Modernist Cuisine, has had a passion for science, cooking, and photography since he was a boy. By the age of 13, Nathan had already cooked the family Thanksgiving feast and transformed the household bathroom into a darkroom.

Myhrvold holds a doctorate in theoretical and mathematical physics as well as a master's degree in economics from Princeton University. He holds additional master's degrees in geophysics and space physics and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles. At Cambridge University, Myhrvold did postdoctoral work with Stephen Hawking in cosmology, quantum field theory in curved space-time, and quantum theories of gravitation, all before starting a software company that would be acquired by Microsoft.

As his career developed, he still found time to explore the culinary world and photography. While working directly for Bill Gates as the chief technology officer at Microsoft, Nathan was part of the team that won the Memphis World Championship Barbecue contest; he worked as a stagier at Chef Thierry Rautureau's restaurant Rover's, in Seattle; he then took a leave of absence to earn his culinary diploma from �cole de Cuisine La Varenne, in France.

Nathan retired from Microsoft in 1999 to found Intellectual Ventures and pursue several lifelong interests in photography, cooking, and food science. During this time, some of his photographs were published in America 24/7 (DK Publishing, Inc., 2003) and Washington 24/7 (DK Publishing, Inc., 2004). Unable to find practical information about sous vide cooking, he decided to write the book he felt was missing; one that provided a scientific explanation of the cooking process, the history of cooking, and the techniques, equipment, and recipes involved in Modernist cooking. Inspired by this void in cooking literature, he decided to share the science of cooking and wonders of Modernist cuisine with others, hoping to pass on his own curiosity and passion for the movement.

In the process of creating his first book, Nathan founded The Cooking Lab, hired an interdisciplinary team that included scientists, research chefs, and writers, and published the much-acclaimed six-volume, 2,438-page Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking, in 2011. That set was followed by Modernist Cuisine at Home, in 2012, which applies the insights of the original book in a format designed for home cooks. In 2013, he wrote The Photography of Modernist Cuisine, and The Cooking Lab partnered with Inkling to publish the Modernist Cuisine at Home app.

Its a BIG book

So... if you are looking for recipes or more of the Modernist Cuisine techniques, look elsewhere. This is a photography book - for food.

That said, it is an AMAZING photography book for food. My only fault would be that often the pictures are lessened in impact by having to go across the page divide. I would have much rather seen them confined to a single large page. And double the photos. (It also ruins the ability to carve up the book if you have wall space you'd like covered! Sacrilege I know, but consider that $90 is cheap to create some amazing wall art)

And I do mean large - like any good photography book, this thing is HUGE. Like, no bookshelf storage for this one... it dwarfs even the MC cookbooks in their case, and makes the Fat Duck large cookbook look tiny. However, it'll likely fit in well if you have other large art books.

So, a reduce a star only because they made the choice of crossing pages with the photos, and I frankly think it ends up detracting from many of the pictures, especially since the boo is big enough, you can't get a good flat lay from the spine. Other than that, this is an amazingly well shot book, and maintains the ultra high quality of Nathan's printing efforts.

Not enough how-to to interest photographers

I returned this book. It is indeed a book of beautiful photographs, but it does not live up to the billing in the description, "The images stand on their own, but readers can follow their curiosity to illuminating descriptions in the back of the book that delve into the stories, techniques, and science behind each photo." No, they can't. The how-to, behind the scenes section at the end is skimpy at best and too basic to be of use for photographers looking to push the boundaries of food photography. If you want a book of pretty pictures blown up from even the oversized "Modernist Cuisine," this is your book. There are 300 huge closeups of food. If you are a photographer intrigued by some of the radical techniques used by Dr. Myhrvold and his team to capture those images you will be sorely disappointed.

This book is required reading for the open Yale course on Roman Art and Architecture. It is a perfect compliment to the course or it could very easily be read without the course. I intend to travel to Italy to see these beautiful sites and I will certainly take my book with me.

Sites and Insights

I found this book to be an excellent, even masterly, coverage of the subject. It is bound by its period, but still gives a sense of the continuity of architectural development from the native Italian, Etruscan, Hellenic and particularly the Hellenistic influences on the growth of Roman architecture into and through the Imperial period. It also covers the continuity of architectural styles, technologies and traditions into the Romanesque period.
I liked the way in which the author covered the regional influences on architecture in the various parts of the Roman world, especially contrasting the East, with its substantial existing traditions, styles and techniques, with the "frontier" type of situation in the West, where the new introduction of Roman technologies and styles all but eclipsed those which had gone before.
The author's writing style seemed the relaxed intimations of a man comfortable with his mastery of the material and without the need to prove himself. I found a particular enjoyment in the tone of someone enjoying passing on the details of his favourite subject.
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in the way the Romans solved some of the universal challenges of a built environment.

Great book!!! This book is full of wonderful thoughts that inspire reflections on this earthly journey. It's a good guide to finding a happy and meaningful life. It is set up in such a way that it makes it easy to reflect on just a sentence, a page, or the whole book.

I was not disappointed by this book

I was not disappointed by this book. I have read Mike Leon's other books and they are all pretty good but this one is pretty much the best. It really shows that the author is growing as a writer and and he is really comfortable in the authors shoes. First off, he toned down some of the violence that other reviewers complained about in "Kill Kill Kill" but honestly I didn't have an issue with that given the title I expected mega violence. This feels like a movie. Flat out action from the 90's with a touch of great characterization.

With that out of the way just pick it up. You will have a good time with a fast read.

A winner for sure

Wow, this book really keeps the pace when it gets good. Beginning is a bit on the site side I admit, but it gets better, and better, and finishes off well. This is your usual slasher book with good characters and suspense. It doesn't have too many plot twists that make you roll your eyes until you're dizzy, but it fits have some excellent cliffhanger situations that keep you interested. Mike Leon, you did a fine job here.

Another solid choice.

Mike Leon does it again. Just like Kill Kill Kill, this book has it all. The characters were believable and had great depth, the plot never left me bored, and the movie theme was brilliantly executed and did well to enhance the action. I look forward to reading the next installment in the series.

This book arrived in excellent condition. It was wrapped in bubble wrap and was without a blemish. The text is a very good and thorough overview of halachah that is great for adult and high school students. I ordered it from Otzer Judaica and the company was very helpful.

A great modern reference

Trying to learn halacha can be hard for someone raised secular or reform who is trying to come to observance of traditional Judaism. The Shulchan Aruch, SA Kitzur and Mishna Berurah can be tough reads, confusing, dense and anachronistic. This book presents a smattering of commonly needed laws presented in clear modern language, well organized and easy to understand. The breadth and depth of Halacha is enormous but this concise reference is a good starting place as any

This is an amazing book on Halachah. it gives a very basic overview of the different laws a Jew encounters on a daily basis. anything from what we do when we first wake up in the morning to when we go to bed at night. I am in the process of conversion right now and it is helping me learn so much.
