Young Adult readers would enjoy this novella.

I received a copy of this title to read and review for Wicked Reads

3 stars. I believe young adults would enjoy the story- I'm reading and reviewing from an adult standpoint.

Genre: Young Adult | Young Adult romance(lesbian) | Coming-of-age | A bit of an unnecessary suspense/thriller thrown in at the end adding violence |

Age-range: 14+

Audrey is from a lower-income family, struggling to simply put food in their bellies. Their living situation is destitute, and added on top of that is the fact that Audrey's mother is bipolar.

"Show, not tell," is a writer's standard. In most instances, Audrey's uncomfortable life was told, not shown (sometimes at ad nauseam) and I wish this had been fleshed out more to develop Audrey's character instead of making her sound whiny in monologue and dialogue. But it did create the chip on her shoulder that pushed the storyline forward. This would have hit harder if the reader had been shown, not just heard about it, to truly get that punch to the gut sensation.

Determined to change her fate, Audrey is working her tail off in High School to ensure she makes it to college. Forward and a bit controlling, Audrey comes off as a good role model with her worth ethic and moral compass but she's a bit short-sighted in the fact that what is right for her may not be right for her older brother. Know-it-all-ish, which can be grating on the reader, because how did a younger sister at her age have the life experience to know more than anyone else (true to how most teenagers think, I guess).

Drama keeps trying to pull her under as she fights to float back to the top, where the reader is hit with the woe-is-me tale of a girl who just doesn't seem to catch a break, which gets a bit old for someone of my 'advanced' age.

Audrey didn't freak out for falling for a girl. She had no doubts and rolled with it. There was no family drama on this front. Everyone was very understanding and tolerant. Not that they shouldn't have been, but in a LBGTQ novel you'd expect a few hiccups. In a way, this felt like a backseat issue, not in the foreground of the storyline even if it was a book about a girl crushing and falling in love with another girl.

Carefully Everywhere Descending's pacing is on the slow side, a story about first love, with the all the angst and drama you'd expect from a Young Adult novel. The romance is light. The crush and the economic state of Audrey take up most of the book. But then a side story thread kind of pops out of nowhere to add some depth to the story, but it just felt unfinished and like it was thrown in there and didn't fit the overall flow. It was bizarre, actually.

Stuck In The Middle With You

Quick Summary: Audrey and Scarlett are two high school students who come from very different families. Audrey, the main character, is poor to the point of missing meals where as Scarlett owns a fancy car and would go out to eat at a restaurant every night if she could. Audrey is also super smart and studies all the time and Scarlett is close to failing her English class. Scarlett asks Audrey to help tutor her, which begins the opposites attracting.

This was hard for me decide between 3 stars and 4, so for the sake of honesty I would give it a 3.5 if I could.

My dilemma was that the writing was smooth and interesting, the story had a great base, and I liked the main character a lot. HOWEVER, I actually didn't think the two main girls had that much chemistry. It was almost like I was expecting them to get together, and then if the book had been longer, break up and show the lesson of early first loves. Since that didn't happen, I was just left disappointed in the chemistry. Someone else mentioned that they kinda wished that Audrey got together with her best friend, and I have to admit I totally agree. They had the connection that was missing for me.

The ending definitely went somewhere I wasn't expecting, so that was a pleasant surprise. With that, and the previously mentioned positives, I feel like this author is one step away from writing a really solid book all around.

Recommendation: Rent it...can you rent it?? I'm still stuck in the middle...

I enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this book. Audrey has a lot of things to worry about, like many her age. While we are not at a perfect place as a society in respecting people regarding sexual preference and identity, the acceptance in this book is not too far off from some tolerant areas today. This is NOT to say that many places have a long way to go towards being equality. However, in response to those reviewers who wrote that the setting was too tolerant and unrealistic, I would say that everyone has had different experiences, and some have been luckier than others. Why wish more obstacles on a character instead of accepting that the society is supportive of who she is (and others are)? This book is not about her struggle for acceptance in that area. She is primarily concerned about her acceptance socio-economically, and her feelings towards Scarlett, like most her age would be during their first infatuation.

That aside, some of the secondary characters in the book do feel a little one-dimensional at times. Audrey and Scarlett are different, but seem to respect each other and have good chemistry. Although the mutual attraction is evident early on, there is a bit of a wait before anything progresses. It is a very sweet book.

The ending did throw me a bit, as it seemed like it was tacked on crookedly with old tape.

About the Author

John Marenbon studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where in 1978 he became, as he remains, a fellow. He is also a Fellow of the British Academy (2009) and Honorary Professor of Medieval Philosophy in the University of Cambridge (2010) . He has also taught at the Sorbonne (Paris IV) and has been a visiting fellow at the Centre for Mediaeval Studies and the Pontifical Institute at the University of Toronto, and at present holds a visiting appointment at Peking University. His books include Pagans and Philosophers. The problem of paganism from Augustine to Leibniz (Princeton University Press, 2015), and The Cambridge Companion to Boethius (Cambridge University Press, 2009).

In this edition we have given more attention to the interrelationships among genres. Though techniques of character development or dialogue may appear irrelevant to writing poetry or nonfiction, they are not. Nor are the techniques of sound patterns beside the point when one comes to write a play or a story. As we tell students in our workshops, what makes writing both fascinating and difficult is the fact that everything counts.

Almost everywhere, we have added and replaced examples, expanded sections, deleted some material and added other material. We have tried to make the book more readable, and we have added tools like the "scam sheet" and "Proofreading Check List" in Chapter 16. Chapter 2 has new material on the journal as a literary form. Chapter 4 includes an enhanced discussion of style. Chapter 5 attends more fully to electronic research. We have added new stories to Chapter 12 as well as a creative nonfiction essay that is not a memoir. In Chapter 15, two ten-minute plays have replaced Trifles because we felt shorter plays would be more helpful models for beginning writers. We have deleted and added exercises. In short, we have tried to do what a revision ought to do.

If you are coming to The Creative Writer's Handbook for the first time, you may be overwhelmed by both the amount of detail and the number of questions we ask you to consider as well as the sizeable number of exercises. I basically agree with Mr. Samuelson: far too much advice.

Though the text has some good discussion of the writing process and useful exercises, the authors tend to set down at times questionable "rules" and much too much advice. The price is also out of line for most students in public universities and colleges, especially adult education students who want to write as a means of personal enrichment--and it is the latter type of student rather than the next Hemingway or Frost who is most likely to register for a creative writing courrse.

Helpful but full of typos

The other people reviewing this should have kept in mind that this book was intended to introduce novices to the basic concepts of creative writing. I did not feel it was condescending or distracting. I thought it was helpful and thorough as well as specific. Not meant for the literary types who've convinced themselves that they are "writers" and therefore above the practical advice this book offers. It was used as a text book for a class I took: "Intro to Creative Writing." I found it very helpful and useful. I learned a lot!

Caution: This edition is filled with typos.

There are already dozens of creative writing "how to" books on the market...Why make a student spend this much for a book that's overloaded and at times condescending? Too much advice can intimidate a student; far more useful are exercises and suggestions from practicing writers.
