Thoughtful and insightful

Smith and Telang use extensive research to shed light on consumer behavior in the entertainment industry. The book tells the stories of different elements of the entertainment industry (movies, music, books, and even gambling) and the impact of comprehensive consumer data and technology on market strategies. The journey of the past 10-20 years of technology advancement and its impact on the evolution of well-known industries make the reading both familiar and fun. The authors do a remarkable job explaining complex concepts, integrating themes and delivering a path forward.

Through this impeccably researched book, besides understanding how published music and movies & TV businesses have changed, we can get profound insights into how much power we as individuals have given to Big Data companies, how our society, indeed our politics, or democracy is being changed under our noses.

A hidden part of the human mind is at the root of our problems of stress, unhappiness, self-doubt and paralyzing anxiety, said the author of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health.

Author L. Ron Hubbard said past painful experiences are stored as memories just below the level of conscious thought in what he called the “reactive mind,” where they can be triggered in the present to work destructively against you. It works like this: through years of research on hundreds of cases, Hubbard discovered two parts to the human mind. First there is the analytical mind, the mind that rationalizes, calculates, dreams, solves and creates. This is the part of the mind that we want to be working at 100% capacity, 100% of the time. What hinders achieving this 100% level of operation is called the reactive mind.

The reactive mind is the subconscious part of our mind that acts without our permission. It takes control on a stimulus-response basis, acting as a self-defense mechanism gone awry. The reactive mind thinks in identities, that is to say it cannot differentiate between a current situation and a past painful experience. It collapses the two, giving us commands to operate off of that have little or no basis in current reality.

The analytical mind goes through existence recording diligently until something happens that causes the reactive mind to take over. The cause could be an accident, heavy drowsiness, emotional shock or many other combinations of painful experiences. Suddenly the reactive mind begins recording everything that is occurring around you during the painful incident: all sounds, scents, sights and feelings.

Later in life, when you encounter a situation similar to the original recording made, the reactive mind once again takes over and begins to feed you data about how to act and respond -- based on information from a totally different incident in the past!

In the opening pages of Dianetics, L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “Dianetics is no solemn adventure. For all that it has to do with suffering and loss, its end is always laughter, so foolish, so misinterpreted were the things which caused the woe.”

Herein lies the crux of Dianetics’ success. “We have around us today many problems: problems of the criminal, war, individual illness and juvenile delinquency. We are faced with very intimate and vital problems which we are not, as a large society, adequately solving. Dianetics has introduced into the society a technique by which it is possible to increase the potential working groups in the country.

“I would like to tell you a little more about Dianetics, its general ability to remedy some of the troubles and problems with which the community, the individual, the nation are faced. We have quite a few things in this society today which need remedying, and we are in a little bit better position to remedy these things.

“Dianetics is a series of techniques, tested on an engineering basis, which do things with the science of thought. You hear people say, ‘Dianetics? This is probably just another idea. If we sleep on featherbeds we will all be much healthier, etc.’ This is the sort of thing that has been going on in the past about thought itself: ‘If you sit with your legs crossed for fifteen minutes every morning and say, ‘Every day in every way we are getting better and better, ‘” etc. In the past they were trying to sell this sort of thing as a substitute for a good science of thought. The public is very justly suspicious of anything new that pretends to do something about the human mind.

“We have reached the place where we can blow a whole town off the face of the earth, drive automobiles at 110 miles an hour and unload how many tons of weight, where, at such and such a time, but nobody has been adequately studying the human mind itself.

“Doctors know that human ills stem from the mind. New remedies come out: ‘All you have to do is take so-and-so and life is wonderful.’ The thinking medical men, however, who have ability and who have done observations on their own, know that none of these medicines are panaceas…. With 75% of man’s ills very little advance has been made…”

“In Dianetics we demonstrate the fact that we have techniques to do away with psychosomatic illnesses. People say, ‘Why didn’t someone know this before? Why didn’t someone know that we could recover all our memories of childhood?

“One day I ran into a lady. She hadn’t known who her parents were... Her parents had died before she knew them. I took her back to the period where she could see her parents. We found her name, what her birthday was, where her parents had died, of what they had died, etc. She came back to present time in a remarkable state, tremendously enthused. Interesting to me that four psychiatrists had worked on this lady and were in the audience. Two came up and confessed to me that they had thrown this patient at me to prove that Dianetics did not work. They had worked on her for five years and considered her the hardest patient in the area. These two gentlemen were more courteous to me after that.

“I have received a letter from a gentleman in the Midwest who wants us at the Foundation to send him a certified auditor trained in these techniques in order to instruct the staff of an entire sanitarium in order to accomplish what they have not accomplished before.

“They did not know how thought works, what are the parts of the mind, etc. As a consequence they could not predict how a person would react under certain circumstances. They did not recognize that when a nation goes to war it was in a period of madness.

“Dianetics is interested in experimentation in order to increase the application of these techniques. Our research department is very hard at work running a pilot project on a small group in order to perfect these applications of Group Dianetics. In a few days Group Dianetics has taken an apathetic company and has brought it up to where its income potential has almost doubled. These things are the vital stuff out of which we hope to make a larger and better future for the world.”

This Book Changed My Life!!!

This book helped me identify all the problems I was having in life. I kept noticing self sabotaging behaviors repeating in my life and quite frankly I was getting tired of it. After reading this book I was able to identify exactly why that was and I now have complete control over it!!! Not enough words to describe how much of a relief it is to know how to control your life with absolute certainty. I'm very grateful for this book

A Straight Forward Read

I'm reading this text for a stylistics course, and I think it is very direct in its description of different methodologies and practices. I may be a biased though as I've already completed sociolinguistics course work, and stylistics and sociolinguistics have similar practices and theoretical perspectives.

For me this would make a satisfying wrap to the story, but there is more and I'm waiting; impatiently.

The Children Of The Moon (The Girl In Between : Series Book 3)by Laekan Zea Kemp
This novel continues from the end of the second novel and this review contains my review of all three novels.

I can't claim to be a great fan of some series that include certain elements and this one could easily fall into that category. On the other hand I have to admit that the cover intrigued me; though it did almost put me off, because I rarely read horror fiction and this had that feel to it. As usual I read the sample, which was quite adequate this time and I recommend that anyone taking an interest in this series read the sample. For this reader the sample nailed it for me because of the good crisp writing style and the excellent character development. I've read a few paranormal fictions and this one might fall within that category as well as horror and the first book definitely has less elements of horror, though as the series progresses it seems to dip further and further into a dark sense that's tainted with horrific elements. In reading the sample I think that the thing to keep in mind is that the writing style and pace remain the same, which means that if you get easily hooked by the first book then you'll most likely enjoy the first three books and like the rest of us you'll be impatiently waiting for the Forth and possibly final book of the series. Still I must add the warning that this goes on my growing list of books that I love and hate at the same time and that is mostly tied with the Cliff-hanger-ish-ness of the endings.

With that in mind my suggestion for anyone hooked by the sample would be to buy the three as though they were one very long book. Since there is little value in buying the bundled version, which is the same price as all three books separately, I'd go with the three separate because that dispels some of the reality that as one piece they are a huge and perhaps epic volume. As separate novels it at least fosters the illusion of reasonable size. Because book one and two are clearly cliffhangers I have a hard time resolving them down to individual pieces. Honestly speaking the third novel also is cliff-ish in nature, but it has a specific unique flavor to it that would allow it to exist as an ending that allows the reader a wide range of personal thought about the whole.

To get to the story about Bryn:In the first book; The Girl In Between; I have to admit that I had some reservations about the main character making use of a debilitating disease such as KLS, Klein-Levin Syndrome, as a main plot point although it does bring to mind Elizabeth Moon's The Speed of Dark in, which she has a main character who suffers autism and that was handled quite well. Both books tend to be about how the main character fights just for some small bit of normality in their life. The main difference might be that in this story it becomes clear that there might be something more going on with the main character and that it might not be KLS at all.

The story starts during one of Bryn's episodes where she sleeps for long periods of time. As it opens she's in her dream world alone as usual, but this time something, someone washes onto the beach and into her dream. A boy who has nearly drown ;and she brings him back to the brink of life just before she returns to her real life. This is the beginning of the most unusual part of book one with the mystery boy in her dreams who has no name or memories and for all intent and purpose could easily just be one more figment of her strange dreams. The dreams themselves are something that falls just outside the lines of the usual symptoms of the syndrome, but there is no mistaking that Bryn often falls to sleep for periods longer than a few days and is likely suffering something that has symptoms similar to KLS.

Book one is mostly the story of Bryn and her family as they struggle to create a normal life for Bryn. Bryn is a teen in her final year of high school and is hoping to go to college. But with the episodes still occurring and the possibility that they could be with her well into her thirties, things are looking bleak. All she wants is to be normal and to lessen the burden on her family. It is not until late into book one that the boy in the dreams and the nature of the dreams begin to become a catalyst driving the story toward the darker and more horrific elements to show up in the next book. Still without the horror there is something compelling about the authors handling of the story that drove this reader on through to the end. And though the ending is not quite complete I felt compelled to continue with reading into book two.

Book one is a good, well written, YA fantasy that addresses some of the issues of the debilitating disease and how it affects not just the patient but the whole family that surround her. It's also a novel that this reader had to pay particular attention to the many details because it was too easy to lose the way and have to check back to unravel some of my own confusion.

Though I managed to finish all three novels in one and a half days of reading over the weekend, it may take most readers a bit longer than that; but as I mentioned, if you're hooked by the sample then the rest of the writing should keep you hooked right through to the end of the third book.

In book two the story begins to dip deeply into world building as Bryn and Roman come to terms with the struggles in their own lives while uncovering the truth about the illness that has for so long mimiced KLS. This novel also begins delving into the darker side of what might be described as a Paranormal Horror as Bryn's struggle moves from trying to be normal to trying to survive. Though Bryn and Roman have some natural bond formed between them, their lives and pasts are creating a gulf that leaves them to fight their battles separately. Bryn has a possibility of help from a duo of doctors who are researching, not just the KLS but something quite similar to what she has experienced. One of the doctors lost his daughter to something similar and has promised not to let that happen to Bryn, but in this story we will find that there are many players with their own agenda and Bryn will soon find out she has few people she can trust.

The writing remains solid in this novel that should pique the interest of those who love paranormal and the elements of the horrific. But even for those who find the genre out of their sphere of interest the writing is compelling enough to draw any reader into the story. So much so that even with the second cliffhanger ending I had to continue on to see where Laekan Zea Kemp was taking all of this.

I started the third book with a bit of reluctance, not knowing how many more books there might be. At the time I didn't realize the author has made at least one statement suggesting things will be wrapped up in the forth book. With that in mind my usual caution to those who dislike the never-ending stories that some series have carried on into can be tempered in that this one might have satisfactory conclusion in the next volume. For me as a reader this, the third book, though not quite a full wrap did end on a note that made it a good place to pause; because the ending, though ambiguous in nature, was quite close to endings I’ve seen in other similar books and leaves enough satisfaction and room for the reader to thoughtfully fill in their own notions about how things will end for Bryn.

Still it will be interesting to find out what happens next.

The third novel does a fair job of wrapping the Paranormal, sort of romance and sort of horror into something that should leave the reader anticipating the final outcome while remaining somewhat satisfied with the continuing growth of the main characters up to this point.

Wow...I don't know what to say.
What comes to mind first is...READ IT.
I love this series. When I read the first book, the girl in between, I didn't know what to expect. I was definitely not expecting this story of pain, fate, soul mates, destiny, and darkness.
Hands down. My favorite book series of the year.
I loved reading about Bryn and Roman. How they each grow and how they deal with the struggles that keep following them everywhere they. Sam is just precious. Every character is well developed and all of them belong in the book. They all contribute greatly to the story. It was an easy read but at the same time. I stopped to really think about the information coming to light. I love this!

A Must for People With Celiac Disease or Gluten-Intolerance and Acquired Fructose Intolerance!!!

I love this cookbook. I'm a celiac with a decades old-diagnosis--and lingering IBS. Cutting out dairy and fructose, along with gluten almost cured me of any digestive anxiety. It also left me despairing of every cooking or eating anything interesting again. This is a fantastic book for that problem--the recipes are detailed and yummy. And, the ingredients are easy to get in any well-stocked regular grocery store.

There are recipes in this book that are answers to long-term questions: how do you make pizza and pesto on a low fodmap diet? How can you make good desserts? What about snacks? How do you deal with spices? (Garlic-infused olive oil, instead of minced garlic.)

Also, the book made it possible to eat more than I thought I could--you can have tomato sauce if you're fructose intolerant, just not with onions and not in large quantities. That means tomato-shrimp bisque and lasagna and pizza with tomato sauce are safe to eat.

This book is even useful if you have other intolerances. I'm allergic to eggs, and I'm mostly pescaterian--my solution for using the recipes in this book has been to substitute tilapia for chicken, and adjust the cooking times accordingly; if you can eat dairy, you'll love the desserts. if you can't have dairy there are still some really good options for cookies and cake.

A few caveats: vegans and vegetarians will not like this book--it's very beef-and-pork heavy. (That's not a criticism; this is just not the book for that sort of person.)

Low-FODMAP, gluten-free recipes in a lovely package

This is a beautiful book with glossy paper and plenty of color photos. It contains a short but nevertheless thorough introduction that explains FODMAPs and their role in functional bowel disorders, such as IBS. Unlike its companion book, The Complete Low-FODMAP Diet, this book consists almost entirely of recipes and is basically the "how-to" part of the diet. The recipes range from relatively simple to fairly complex, making it especially useful for people who really like to cook. It also contains a valuable nutritional analysis for each recipe. Although the cover states that there are vegan options (and these are covered briefly in the introductory material), it would take a very creative cook to employ these options successfully with the majority of the recipes. This is a book primarily geared toward those who include meat in their diets (and there are several meaty photos that vegetarians and vegans might object to, so be forewarned), along with eggs and cheese. If you fit into that category and also need to be gluten-free, you'll be able to indulge in all the recipes in the book. If you are vegan (or even vegetarian), you might want to hold out for something geared more specifically to your needs.

Machine Learning for the Web by Andrea Isoni can be considered as an introduction to machine learning tools in Python for technicians already acquainted with machine learning theory.

The first chapters give a short overview of the most important machine learning algorithms used in machine learning scientific and industrial environments, and gives a short introduction to the adopted Python libraries to process data employing those algorithms.

The second part is more focused on technological aspects, and shows how to use Python to implement a web application complete with a recommendation and sentiment analysis system using the django framework and various Python libraries.

A somehow more detailed summary follows.

Chapter 1, Introduction to Practical Machine Learning Using Python

The more important Python libraries employed in the book are introduced here. This chapter can be considered as a tutorial on the various libraries, namely: NumPy, pandas, matplotlib. For the first two a complete tutorial is given, for the last one (matplotlib) only a short introduction. Other libraries are used in the book (namely: SciPy, scikit-learn (sklearn), scrapy), and are introduced later in the book.

Note that this chapter assumes the reader to have a basic understanding of the Python language (although not advanced programming topics are required to fully enjoy the book).

Chapter 2, Machine Learning Techniques: Unsupervised Learning

This chapter recalls the most important unsupervised learning algorithms, in particular clustering and data reduction algorithms. Every description
is complemented by a coding example in Python using numpy and the other libraries.

Note that although all the algorithms are fully described, the chapter assumes a detailed knowledge of the mathematical notation and understanding of the algorithms. So this is more to be intended as a reminder for the student rather than a full mathematical introduction to the main concepts.

Chapter 3, Supervised Machine Learning

This chapter provides an overview of the most employed supervised machine learning models: it starts with an explanation of the model error estimation, and proceeds with a description of several methods: based on linear regressions (ridge, lasso, logistic), k-nearest neighbours (KNN), Naive Bayes and Multinomial Naive Bayes, Gaussian Naive Bayes, decision trees, SVM.

The models are then compared using a testing dataset with numpy/pandas/sklearn and measuring several performance indices. This is done for classifiers and regression models using two different public datasets.

The chapter ends with a description of the Hidden Markov Chain model, together with a Python implementation.

Chapter 4, Web Mining Techniques

This chapter is about retrieving pages from the web, storing and processing them to extract relevant information. The chapter can be divided in the following sections.

Web structure mining: explores web crawling, indexing, and page ranking (in particular, the famous Page algorithm is explained).

Web content mining: parsing is discussed using the scrapy tool, natural language processing through the nltk library. Several information retrieval models are then considered and explained from a mathematical point of view. For each considered model (TF-IDF, Latent Semantic Analysis, Doc2Vec, Word2vec), a Python example is later presented in the context of creating a movie review query system, and the models performances are compared.

Postprocessing information: postprocessing is analyzed in the context of providing two distinct goals, select topics and provide subjective information related to user estimation (opinion/sentiment analysis). Latent Dirichlet Analysis is covered to provide means of classifying a text extracting latent topics. Sentiment analysis is then performed on a corpus of movie reviews, essentially applying several classifiers (Naive
Bayes, SVM and logistic regression) and testing their performances with nltk.

Chapter 5, Recommendation Systems

Given a set of users, and a set of items, and some user evaluations on the items, a recommendation systems tries to predict the non-evaluated items which may be appreciated by the user. This chapter explores the most important techniques adopted in the industry, and as usual provides an exampling implementation in Python using scipy with data from the MovieLens database.

In particular the chapter explores Content-based Filtering (CBF) and Collaborative Filtering (CF) methods. As usual, several complete examples are provided. Also, the chapter mentions hybrid approaches to recommendations, and recommendation system performance evaluation using supervised machine learning techniques.

Chapter 6, Getting Started with Django

This chapter provides a short tutorial on setting up a django server and writing a complete application for it. The chapter explains the code for a simple application storing addresses.The chapter covers the most important element of a django application, thus at the end of the reading you should be able to get a firm grasp of how it works.

Chapter 7, Movie Recommendation System Web Application

This chapter applies the knowledge developed in the previous chapters to implement a movie recommendation system using django and the
recommendation techniques reviewed in the previous chapters. In particular, the implemented system supports an information retrieval system (Term Frequency, Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) model) to allow the user to find movies typing some relevant words, together with a recommendation system (based on CF item-based and log-likelihood ratio).

Chapter 8, Sentiment Analyser Application for Movie Reviews

This chapter is about the creation of a web application for movie reviews sentiment analysis. It employs data mining techniques to extract information related to movies from the web and perform sentiment analysis. The web crawling part is performed through the use of the scrapy library using the bing REST API. Natural language processing is performed through nltk: tokenization, selection of the most important words and bigrams, and classification using a Naive Bayes classifier. The fetched reviews are ranked according to the usual PageRank algorithm.

The book provides an extensive analytical index, but is missing a bibliography (although papers and online documentation are frequently referenced in the text).

Conclusions: this book gives a complete overview of the more important algorithms in the field of machine learning, and shows how to employ them in a typical production scenario. Given the complexity of the topics, it's probably more useful for the technician already familiar with the machine learning theory. Indeed, although the theory is shortly exposed in the first chapters, it assumes already some familiarity on the subject, so this cannot be considered an introduction to machine learning concepts and mathematical/statistical models.

If you are already somehow acquainted with machine learning theory and statistical methods, and want to know how to apply them to build a complete web application using the state-of-the-art tools and Python libraries, this book is a perfect and precious choice. Particularly appreciated is the care committed on providing extensive examples, which cover most if not all the algorithms reviewed in the book, and can be adopted as the foundation to implement similar machine learning systems based on Python.

Even in the case you are not a technician or a student of the subject, but you are simply curious about machine learning and/or in case you want to widen the range of your skill-set and knowledge to venture in a new expanding scientific/technological field, given its raising importance in technology and society, this book is a recommended reading, together with some more focused formation on its mathematical/statistical background.

Good introduction to machine learning in python

This book is a good introduction to machine learning that mixes a theoretical overview of the most used machine learning algorithms with a step by step guide on how to integrate machine learning in simple web applications, using the Django framework.

All the code and examples are in python, so I'd recommend this book if python is your language of choice.
I'd recommend this book if either you are a data scientist who's used to other tools (like R) and wants to learn how to build ML web apps in python, or if you're a python web developer who wants to learn machine learning. In this case, I'd recommend you also get a more theoretical book like Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning (Information Science and Statistics) .

The book goes over the different families of ML algorithms (supervised, unsupervised) showing the math behind it, and has code examples on how to use it in python. One slightly annoying thing on the PDF version is that the python code is printed as an image, so you can't copy and paste snippets from it.

Then it gives you a brief introduction to Django and how to build simple web applications with it. Finally, it merges the data science part with the web developing part, showing how to build a movie recommendation app with sentiment analysis. The Django part is just enough to get you started.

Things that the book does NOT cover is how to run these algorithms on massive datasets (aka big data), for which you'd need something like spark.

This book is an excellent choice to fill the gap between Machine Learning and web development.
The use of Python, an easy to learn programming language, helps a lot in the comprehension and development of the algorithms. Chapter 1 is a very nice and concise beginning tutorial of the NumPy and Pandas Python modules.
Chapters 2 and 3 are also very useful for Machine Learning beginners like me. They encompass the most commonly used algorithms for unsupervised and supervised Machine Learning. Within the following chapters, the reader is pleasantly led across the main web data mining techniques, the most popular recommended systems used in a commercial environment, and finally into the Django framework to begin developing web applications.
