About the Author
Tony Hoagland is the author of Unincorporated Personas in the Late Honda Dynasty (2010); What Narcissism Means to Me (2003), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; Donkey Gospel (1998), which received the James Laughlin Award; and Sweet Ruin (1992), chosen for the 1992 Brittingham Prize in Poetry and winner of the Zacharis Award from Emerson College. Hoagland's other honors include two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a fellowship to the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, the O. B. Hardison Prize for Poetry and Teaching from the Folger Shakespeare Library, the 2008 Jackson Poetry Prize from Poets & Writers magazine, and the Poetry Foundation's 2005 Mark Twain Award in recognition of his contribution to humor in American poetry. Hoagland teaches in the writing program at the University of Houston and in the Warren Wilson low-residency MFA program.

Why We Love Hoagland

If you like even one of his poems, buy all his books. Chances are what you like about that poem you will see over and over again in his others. Which is not to say they are similar in theme or subject...he's all over the place. But what I love about Hoagland is his perspective and voice...even when he takes me places I'd rather not go. I have read his books over and over again and always it's a discovery. I demand energy from a book or author or poet, and Hoagland delivers and delights.

I first came to Hoagland's poetry through his second book, Donkey Gospel. Very good stuff, I thought. I'll try some more. Sweet Ruin, Hoagland's first, may have been even better. I did not hesitate a year later to advance order number three, What Narcissism Means to Me. The opening poems are among his best, but then there seemed a drop off. The rest of the book wasn't that bad, wasn't that good, so I hesitated when Hard Rain said Buy me! Buy me! But I relented. I figured Hoagland had given me two and a half good books (most poetry volumes give you two and a half good POEMS, if you're lucky; you know it's true).

In Hard Rain Hoagland steps up to the next level. That's right, to major poet. He has NO chance of becoming our county's Poet Laureate; that's how great this chapbook is.

There are maybe two clinkers in the batch (I like where "Greed" is going; it just never gets there). When I read a volume of poetry, I mark the poems I'll want to return to. Usually a pencil lasts me a long time. Not here.

I'll teach "Allegory of the Temp Agence" in my Poetry: Peace and Social Justice course. And "Requests for Toy Piano." And "Summer," a brilliant and frighteningly beautiful example of Hoagland transmogifying news event (the D.C. sniper) into poem: "what will we do if the sniper chooses us tomorrow...each step has a slender string attached." "Operations" should be sent to the White House and to FOX news. But who would volunteer to read it to them, to stress properly "Operation Infinite Self-Indulgence" and how "we tied flags to the antennae of our cars/that snapped like fire when we drove"? And who among such listeners could survive a "naked room full of shadows and light"? Still, Hoagland makes it fun to imagine.

And Hard Rain is fun. Dark fun. Witness the title poem's letter to Dear Abby in which blood is ignored for presents, that is, until we are exposed as the bloodletters: "I used to think I was not a part of this...but that was just another song...taught to me since birth."

In his poetry Hoagland has always looked at himself honestly - often in ways that aren't flattering, never in ways that are sentimental. What Narcissism Means to Me started to pull the rest of us into the lab that is our America. Hard Rain conducts the tests; this is "our marvelous punishment." Hard Rain is Hoagland's marvelous present.

Toward 21st Century Writing

I very much enjoyed this book and read it through breezily in two sittings, with a smile on my face, chuckling inside, now looking forward to reading it through again.

"Allegory of a Temp Agency," "Dialectical Materialism," "Hard Rain," and "Voyage" (which can be found at [...] among my favorites. I think Hoagland has written a book here that swallows and then displays our confused, polyglot, whirligig times. Plus, he leaves room for another poet to take some of the direction charted in "Hard Rain" the book, add more insight, and write not just a book that describes our times, but one that can change it.

If you liked Stephen Dunn's Different Hours, you'll like this. He has Billy Collins' clarity of sentence with more bite and substance. C.K. Williams' most recent The Singing would make an interesting companion to this. Good job T.H.! Thanks for the read. This book is prescient.

A great resource for Browning enthusiasts. The book is full of nice color photographs of various models and it does included FN pistols. The author also inserts his opinion about current and future collectibility of various models. The book is an excellent resource for detailed information and also offers a price guide for its intended subject and it is well worth the money. As good as or better than other Standard Catalogs.

Don't waste your money

I bought this book after purchasing some of the other "standard catalog of..." series. This book does not compare to say the "standard catalog of smith & wesson." You will not find detailed information on any browning firearm you may be looking for. What you will find is plenty of color photos and the author's opinions on what is collectible or not. The pricing is terrible, the blue book of gun values acknowledges that different features of guns add or detract from value, you will not find that in this book. The faults of this book can be summed up thusly: there are about 3 pages and as many photos dedicated to the Hi-Power (a firearm that was made for 75 years) whereas a set of 22 firearms that ONE person in the UNIVERSE owns gets 22 pages of text and photos. To summarize: this book has nice pictures but no useful information for a collector. Chances are, if you are enough of a collector to be looking for a book of this nature you already know more than is contained here and will be disappointed.

Soooo good

Honestly, I love these books. I've been waiting for the third installment of this series like a stalker. Now that I've read it I am completely jonesin' for the next. They're that good.

"Rise" starts out where we left off after what they are now calling bloody Tuesday. I know you can read the synopsis so I won't reiterate it. However, I will add that Ren and all the others are closer, more so now than ever. This also includes Constantine and Dare and more interaction with them in many scenes. Love it. The characters are genuine and dialogue flows naturally according to each personality. Nothing seems forced or contrived--something in which I need to truly fall into a story. Good vs. bad is not so easy to define and characters struggle, sympathize, manipulate, and fight for eachother.

A story with broad appeal!! Fantasy bursting with discerning characters and limitless imagination!!
By all is not lost
The first 3 books of a planned 4-book series (The Awakening of Ren Crown, the Protection of Ren Crown, and now the Rise of Ren Crown) have been so satisfying to read and absorb. Satisfying in the sense that what you want out of a book--a heroine who truly is willing to sacrifice herself for the well-being of others, whip-smart dialogue/character interactions [as another reviewer on Goodreads put it: these people don't have time for nonsense], and a seemingly endless fountain of world-building and creativity talked about, shown, and organically "used" by the characters [to that end, a magic-system and world that honestly rivals that of Harry Potter for me]--is present and active in this narrative, satisfying at least my desire for a "good" story.

It's so natural to hope for the chance for redemptive endings in this narrative-- for the world I've come to know and cherish, though that chance seems murky and dim at this point in the story (as it should!) and I eagerly anticipate how the author will surprise us readers with the plot in hopefully (oh, I so hope!) tying up the loose ends of this fractured world into an ultimate, and ultimately-satisfying redemptive denouement. What I'm trying to say is that the author has shrewdly written a narrative that I CARE about, that I'm invested in and want to see characters and the world they live in mended and brought from brokenness to wholeness, just like Harry Potter for me or Narnia.

If you long for a story, a narrative that pulls you into a dynamic, thought-provoking, imagination-bending, and character-driven world, then you've come to the right series. I fear I'm rambling but it's so hard to define the attraction I experience for this story. One element that is key is that while Ren may (and it may not come to fruition) have a romance in the works, there's a sense in which the romance is always on the cusp, on the brink of coming to fruition, but because our heroine "doesn't have time for nonsense" she values her friendships with others far above and beyond any romantic commitment. In other words, Ren seems to have her head on straight in what she values--which is connection and community far more than her individual desires and impulses--a wisdom beyond her years [though she isn't perfect, by any means and she is growing as a character]. Ren is dynamic--not static and I love that about her.

I also value the depth of character to those surrounding Ren. Again, Harry Potter comes to mind. Rowling didn't focus all her ingenuity onto only Harry. There was complexity and dynamic growth in others as well. The cast of characters in Zoelle's story have their roles to play and they inhabit them with aplomb and heart, among other things.

I favor longer stories, so if you do too, then these books are for you. Invest your time in these books--it is time well spent. Thank you, whoever the author truly is, for your gift--thanks for continuing to write this story--I for one, as an adult reader always searching for a story I can immerse myself in and come out the other side thankful I did, am glad.

In book one, Zoelle introduces her magically layered world via Ren Crown, a dangerously magical late bloomer. Book two hit upon Ren's talents, her desire to protect those she loves, and her brilliant mind adjusting to an influx of knowledge in a new world which culminated in a cliff hanger. This installment was well worth the wait. While the story advancement wasn't as fulfilling as book two - book three barely spanned a few days versus the semester long fashion of the first two books - character development plays front and center. The readers comes to see corruption of power, Con and Dare's character in relation to Ren and each other, Ren's effect on those around her, be they friend or foe, and how she might fit into (and alter) the magical world, if only she can remain free. There is Ren's acceptance that she is the catalyst for change and she has an army of powerful 'delinquents' at her back but all their motives might not be altruistic. The reader is left wanting more and filled with questions. How do Neph's powers work? Is Raphael the true danger or should he be pitied for the madness he was led to by the Department and Olivia's mother? Will Ren lose her freedom to the Dare family in order to avoid a cell in the Department? What are Alex's motives? Can Olivia be cured? These questions beg to be answered in the coming installments.
