Stealing Helen: The Myth of the Abducted Wife in Comparative Perspective, by Lowell Edmunds

It's a familiar story: a beautiful woman is abducted and her husband journeys to recover her. This story's best-known incarnation is also a central Greek myth--the abduction of Helen that led to the Trojan War. Stealing Helen surveys a vast range of folktales and texts exhibiting the story pattern of the abducted beautiful wife and makes a detailed comparison with the Helen of Troy myth. Lowell Edmunds shows that certain Sanskrit, Welsh, and Old Irish texts suggest there was an Indo-European story of the abducted wife before the Helen myth of the Iliad became known.

Investigating Helen's status in ancient Greek sources, Edmunds argues that if Helen was just one trope of the abducted wife, the quest for Helen's origin in Spartan cult can be abandoned, as can the quest for an Indo-European goddess who grew into the Helen myth. He explains that Helen was not a divine essence but a narrative figure that could replicate itself as needed, at various times or places in ancient Greece. Edmunds recovers some of these narrative Helens, such as those of the Pythagoreans and of Simon Magus, which then inspired the Helens of the Faust legend and Goethe.

Stealing Helen offers a detailed critique of prevailing views behind the "real" Helen and presents an eye-opening exploration of the many sources for this international mythical and literary icon.

Review
"Ultimately, the book's greatest merit may lie . . . in his [Edmunds'] broad horizons--in his delight at discovering similarities between classical literature and the tales and experiences of people across the globe."--Barbara Graziosi, Times Higher Education

From the Back Cover

"This book is a masterpiece. Demonstrating that Helen of Troy is part of an international story type, Edmunds completely reexamines how one should study traditional narrative, notions of fiction, and the relations between myth and cult. This book is a condensed and compelling initiation into what shapes stories and our reading of them. It is going to become a classic in its own right."--Richard P. Martin, author of Myths of the Ancient Greeks

"Clearly the work of many years and much reflection, Stealing Helen is an impressive and wide-ranging book from a well-known and innovative scholar. Treating the central topic of Helen from multiple points of view drawn from many disciplines, this invigorating book will interest not only classicists but also anyone interested in the history and construction of narrative traditions."--Stephanie W. Jamison, University of California, Los Angeles

"A work of meticulous and extensive scholarship, Stealing Helen brings folkloric techniques into the mainstream classical study of myth. Edmunds's erudition is remarkable and spans a vast range of classical and folkloric sources."--John Colarusso, McMaster University

About the Author
Lowell Edmunds is professor emeritus of classics at Rutgers University. He is the author of Oedipus: The Ancient Legend and Its Later Analogues and the editor of Approaches to Greek Myth.

Documentation Manual for Occupational Therapy: Writing SOAP Notes, by Crystal Gateley PhD OTR/L, Sherry Borcherding MA OTR/L

One of the most critical skills that occupational therapists must learn is effective documentation.

With that idea in mind, Documentation Manual for Occupational Therapy: Writing SOAP Notes, Fourth Edition presents a systematic approach to a standard form of health care documentation: the SOAP note. The clinical reasoning skills underlying SOAP note documentation can be adapted to fit the written or electronic documentation requirements of nearly any occupational therapy practice setting.

This new Fourth Edition has been updated to reflect current information essential to contemporary occupational therapy practice, including the AOTA’s Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain & Process, Third Edition.

Documentation Manual for Occupational Therapy, Fourth Edition also includes the COAST method, a specific format for writing occupation-based goals.

Crystal Gateley and Sherry Borcherding use a “how-to” strategy by breaking up the documentation process into a step-by-step sequence. Numerous worksheets are provided to practice each individual skill as well as the entire SOAP note process. In addition, examples from a variety of practice settings are included as a reference. Although this text addresses documentation in occupational therapy practice, the concepts can be generalized across other health care disciplines as well.

New in the Fourth Edition:

  • The chapter focusing on reimbursement, legal, and ethical considerations has been vastly expanded to provide an overview of sources of reimbursement, regulatory guidelines, and legal and ethical issues.
  • A new chapter focusing on electronic documentation has been added to illustrate how the concepts presented in this text can be used in various electronic documentation software products.
  • Faculty will have access to 12 videos that can be used for instructional purposes and documentation practice.
  • This edition includes an expanded Instructor’s Manual with sample quiz questions for several of the chapters, templates and grading rubrics for documentation assignments, and other instructional resources.

Instructors in educational settings can visit www.efacultylounge.com for additional material to be used for teaching in the classroom.

Documentation Manual for Occupational Therapy: Writing SOAP Notes, Fourth Edition presents essential documentation skills that all occupational therapy clinicians, faculty, and students will find critical for assessing, treating, and offering the best evidence available for their clients.

Great SOAP Note starter book
By Luke Deandrade
This book uses the COAST method for writing goals and also goes over SOAP notes. It also goes over some medical abbreviations and terminology. There are activity worksheets to help give you practice so you can get down to doing what you need to learn. It also comes with two cardboard cheat sheets that help you remember how to write goals, soap notes, and problem statements for your clients. I would recommend this book to anyone starting OT school. I wish I had gone through it before I had even started.

Documentation Manual For Occupational Therapy
By A D.
Like this book better than the other I purchased simply because it is more in depth. I am revisiting information I learned but in a way that is clicking with my brain. Since I am on clinicals and documentation is not making sense to me- this is vital to my passing the class.

By just another friendly person
overpriced and would be nice to have soap notes for different settings such as acute. The answers are in the back of the book and I find that helpful. The book shows examples of poor, average, better, and much better documentations. I have to highlight the better examples so I can quickly read them for review instead of accidently using a poor example and to save time.

good clean story
By Rhonda
4 STARS

The setting is Wyoming late spring 1900

A train carrying orphans is derailed. Fran Morris lied about her age and was found out. The judge couldn't let her just leave with her younger sister.
Edgar White married her instead of letting her go to saloon or his younger brother marry her.

Edgar was a orphan on a train years ago too. His father took him in plus others. Edgar feels he owes his father everything, while he is gone Edgar was in charge getting the cattle to the buyer. With the train derailed he and his brothers decide to trail drive them. Fran and Emma sneak into the wagon.

Fran is only 19 but passes as younger. She is very protective of her sister. She has a lot of faith that her prayers are answered. Her parents have died and her brother has disappeared. She pretended to be younger so they could go on the orphan train.

Emma is fifteen. She has become fragile. A older richer man has become obsessed with her and tried some things with her. His men have even come out west looking for her. She is scared and shy.

You have to admire Fran, she is smart, full of faith and a hard worker. Yes she passed herself off younger that was the only way she had to get her sister away. She even agreed to marry Edgar.

This is a good story. I have only read now two books in this series but would read the rest of it some time. It does mention faith, prayers and scriptures. It fits well into the story. It is full of drama, action and good dialogue.

I was given this ebook to read for purpose of writing an honest review of The Wrangler's Inconvenient Wife. received the book through Net Galley and Harlequin.

She wanted to protect her sister
By Loveagoodread
All Fran wanted was to protect her sister from a man who was obsessed with the idea of claiming her, a minor, for himself. He is powerful and rich, able to pay lawmen, false witnesses and hired hands to do his bidding. Edgar only wants to help his adoptive parents with their ranch. When Fran's only choice is an offer to work at a saloon, Edgar steps up to the plate and reluctantly offers to marry her. Fran is so relieved to have been rescued from an unthinkable option, she readily accepts Edgar's offer and marries him. Edgar doesn't trust women, so he decides to help her find a job in the neighboring town. Although he feels attracted to his wife and feels a strong need to protect her, he refuses to allow her into his life. Fran sees beyond his gruffness and into his heart and falls in love with her husband. Edgar has to protect his wife and sister from the man and his cohorts who are following them and he must decide if the accusations made against his wife are true or not. She tells him that they are lies, but can he trust her? Can this marriage ever become real?

I love, love
By Bunnyhop
I love, love, love Lacy's books! Anything she writes, I read! I have especially enjoyed her current series and this book I read in one day! Each book just keeps getting better and better! Edgar has always said to himself that he's not getting married. Even the whole town knows it! However, when Fran and her young sister, Emma, come on the Orphan Train and it crashes in town and the sheriff tries to arrest Fran for defrauding the orphanage, the only solution at the spur of the moment was for Edgar to marry Fran. It will be in name only, of course. As the reality sinks in, Edgar needs to figure out what he's going to do with the two gals because he sure doesn't WANT to be married! Edgar has more important duties though. He needs to get his father's cattle to market and with no trains running, he has to take them on a cattle drive. Fran and Emma decide to stowaway because they don't want to be alone. Someone is following them and wants to harm them. That's why they were on the Orphan Train. The cattle drive was fascinating. I love learning about that part of Old West. Lacy did a great job with her research to make it very realistic. I loved the interaction between Edgar, Fran, Emma and Edgar's brothers. The "coming around" of Edgar is written so naturally and the ending is such a heartwarming one that I will remember this book for a long time! I recommend it!

The Wrong House: The Architecture of Alfred Hitchcock, by Steven Jacobs

In this imaginative and scholarly book, Steven Jacobs explores the architectural elements of Alfred Hitchcock’s films and the vital role they played in providing atmosphere and facilitating plot development. Hitchcock famously left nothing to chance, and from the Greenwich Village apartment that provided the set for Rear Window or the now-iconic Bates house in Psycho, every architectural entity plays a significant role both in setting the scene and in advancing the suspenseful narratives of which Hitchcock was master. Having worked as a set designer in the early 1920s, the director remained intimately involved with his films’ sets throughout his entire career. With the help of reconstructed floor plans made specially for this book, the author explains how, for example, confined spaces reinforce vulnerable characters’ sense of being powerless, while readers also learn of the importance of stairs and windows at key moments in Hitchcock’s masterpieces.

Fascinating information for Hitchcock fans!
By John J. Healey
I am a huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock. In my opinion he was the greatest film director and his movies provide untold hours of enjoyment. One reason I particularly admire Hitchcock's films is that they can be watched repeatedly without losing their charm. I'll actually go further by saying they improve with repeated viewings. I can't think of any other set of films where this seems to be the case. One of the reasons is that the films are beautifully crafted on so many levels: plot, acting, cinematography, music, locations. One area that hasn't received enough attention is Hitchcock's art direction, particularly the use of architecture in his films. This excellent book fills that niche perfectly. The book is very well written and is loaded with interesting information, photos, and insights. The knowledge provided by this book serves to increase appreciation and enjoyment of the Master's films even more. Highly recommended.

I am glad I read it before giving it to my teen daughter.....
By rmg
I heard an interview with Lindsey Vonn on NPR, and I was surprised to find myself impressed with her take on our culture's crazy obsession with female beauty which results in many women feeling they have no value unless the world finds them beautiful. I know very little about Lindsey Vonn outside of her impressive skiing accomplishments, so I was so excited at the thought of an athlete, who happens to be beautiful, refuse to allow her beauty to be the thing that defines her. Well, imagine my surprise when I purchased this book, and found page after page of what appeared to be glib exercise and diet advice, all with a focus on being lean, toned, and yes, beautiful. This interspersed with glamour shots of Lindsey, in tons of make up, hair blown out like a Maxim photoshoot, and the addition of a couple of chapters devoted to make up and hair. Huh? Yes, she is strong, and yes, she is beautiful, but it seems as if she, or the person who created the concept for this book, plays down her strength and plays up her beauty and sex appeal. Crazy mixed message. During the same NPR interview, a caller referenced Vonn's instagram account and claimed the exercise routines that appear there "motivate (the caller) to go the extra mile in the gym". Again, given Lindsey's apparent appeal to find value beyond beauty in women, I was surprised to find her instagram account filled with loads of super sexy bikini photos, and very little evidence of "strength". It would be fantastic to see a female athlete, who also happens to be beautiful, resist the urge to appeal to the lowest common denominator of society by proving her sex appeal, because to me that reinforces the message that even astonishingly talented female athletes aren't "good enough" unless they can prove they are sexy to men too. Disappointing, and not a book I want my daughter to read.

Loved It!
By sportsrock8
After suffering two ACL injuries and being able to come back stronger than ever, I love Lindsey's take on the mental and physical aspects of going through an injury. The nutritional guidance is so spot on and really drives home the point there is no one size fits all meal plan that will help you lose AND maintain the weight lost! That has to all come from you and should be based around your preferences! Loved going through the exercises and seeing ones I can incorporate into my day to day routine! The book is overall 10/10 and exactly what I wish all women would pick up when they decide to start working out or changing their lifestyle!

A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction (Center for Environmental Structure), by Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa, Murray S

You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction.

After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language.

At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people.

At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment.

"Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

Amazon.com Review
The second of three books published by the Center for Environmental Structure to provide a "working alternative to our present ideas about architecture, building, and planning," A Pattern Language offers a practical language for building and planning based on natural considerations. The reader is given an overview of some 250 patterns that are the units of this language, each consisting of a design problem, discussion, illustration, and solution. By understanding recurrent design problems in our environment, readers can identify extant patterns in their own design projects and use these patterns to create a language of their own. Extraordinarily thorough, coherent, and accessible, this book has become a bible for homebuilders, contractors, and developers who care about creating healthy, high-level design.

Review

"A wise old owl of a book, one to curl up with in an inglenook on a rainy day.... Alexander may be the closest thing home design has to a Zen master."--The New York Times

"A classic. A must read!"--T. Colbert, University of Houston

"The design student's bible for relativistic environmental design."--Melinda La Garce, Southern Illinois University

"Brilliant....Here's how to design or redesign any space you're living or working in--from metropolis to room. Consider what you want to happen in the space, and then page through this book. Its radically conservative observations will spark, enhance, organize your best ideas, and a wondrous home, workplace, town will result."--San Francisco Chronicle

"The most important book in architecture and planning for many decades, a landmark whose clarity and humanity give hope that our private and public spaces can yet be made gracefully habitable."--The Next Whole Earth Catalog

This book changed the way I look at buildings ... and life!
By James DeRossitt
My fascination with Christopher Alexander's work began with "The Timeless Way of Building," but increased tenfold upon discovering his inexhaustible classic, "A Pattern Language." At over a thousand pages (I think,) "A Pattern Language" is an encyclopedic study of what makes buildings, streets, and communities work -- indeed, what makes environments human.
Alexander and his co-authors present us with over two hundred (roughly 250) "patterns" that they believe must be present in order for an environment to be pleasing, comfortable, or in their words, "alive." The patterns start at the most general level -- the first pattern, "Independent Regions," describes the ideal political entity, while another of my favorite patterns, "Mosaic of Subcultures," described the proper distribution of different groups within a city. The patterns gradually become more specific -- you'll read arguments about how universities should relate to the community, the proper placement of parks, the role of cafes in a city's life. If you wonder about the best design for a home, the authors will describe everything from how roofs and walls should be built, down to how light should fall within the home, where your windows should be placed, and even the most pleasant variety of chairs in the home. An underlying theme of all the patterns is that architecture, at its best, can be used to foster meaningful human interaction, and the authors urge us to be aware of how the houses we build can help us balance needs for intimacy and privacy.
They admit that they are uncertain about some of the patterns -- they indicate their degree of certainty using a code of asterisks placed before the pattern. For each pattern, the authors summarize the pattern in a brief statement printed in boldface, and then describe it at length, drawing upon a variety of sources to give us a full sense of what they mean: these "supporting sources" include an excerpt from a Samuel Beckett novel, papers in scholarly journals, newspaper clippings, etc. Most patterns are accompanied by a photograph (many of them beautiful and fascinating in their own right) and all are illustrated by small, casual hand-drawings. Taken together, "A Pattern Language" is an extraordinarily rich text, visually and conceptually.
As I said in the header of this review, "A Pattern Language" has changed the way I look at buildings and neighborhoods -- I feel like this book has made me attuned to what works, and what doesn't work, in the human environment. I'm constantly realizing things about buildings and streets that this book helped me see -- things that make people feel at home, or feel "alive," in their surroundings, or conversely, things that make people uncomfortable. And the book makes me think differently about life because it showed me how our well-being depends so much upon the way our buildings fit, or don't fit, us as UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS.

it isn't about architecture
By Philip Greenspun
Nominally about architecture and urban planning, this book has more wisdom about psychology, anthropology, and sociology than any other that I've read. Nearly every one of this volume's 1170 pages will make you question an assumption that you probably didn't realize you were making. In a section entitled "Four-Story Limit", Alexander notes that "there is abundant evidence to show that high buildings make people crazy." Underneath is a photo of San Franisco's Transamerica tower, captioned with a quote from Orwell's 1984:
"The Ministry of Truth--Minitrue, in Newspeak--was startlingly different from any other object in sight. It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up terrace after terrace 300 metres in the air."
Alexander backs up this polemic with convincing arguments that high-rise living removes people too far from the casual society of the street, from children playing in the yard, and that apartment-dwellers therefore become isolated.
Alexander spends a lot of time in this book trying to figure out how to restore the damage to our communities that have been done by automobiles. He argues for better public spaces and for more integration of children, old people, and workers. He argues for more access to water by more people.
Many of Alexander's arguments are against the scale of modern systems. Public schools spend a fortune on building and administration precisely because they are so physically large [I've seen statistics showing that our cities spend only about one-third of their budgets on classrooms and teachers]. If we had shopfront schools and fired all the school system personnel who don't teach, we might be able to get student-teacher ratios down to 8 or 10:1 without an increase in cost. Similarly, Alexander argues for smaller retail shops, smaller factories (or at least identifiable small workgroups within factories rather than hundreds of faceless cogs) and more master/apprentice instruction.
What if you like the depredations of modernity and aren't interested in a utopian world where basic human needs are met? Can you learn anything about architecture from this guy? Absolutely. You'll learn that light is everything. Your bedroom has to have eastern light so that the sun wakes you up. Your best living quarters should have southern light. All the rooms should have light from at least two sides, otherwise there will be too much contrast and you'll just have to draw the shades. If you've got kids, make them sleep and play in their own wing of the house. Build a realm for yourself and your wife on a different floor. Meet the kids in the kitchen.
To avoid cluttering my apartment, I give away virtually all the books that I buy these days. I'm keeping this one and plan to re-read it every year.

zen and the art of architecture
By audrey frances
I've read all three books in this series, and I thought this was by far the best and most accessible. The first, "A Timeless Way of Building", introduced the author's philosophy and was, I thought, a bit bogged down with New Age jargon. I prefer to think in terms of comfort and relationships, though ultimately I agree with just about everything the author-as-designer states and obviously went on to read his other work. I thought the third book, photographs of a project completed by the author, should have been the most informative, but ultimately didn't do justice to the author's ideas. But maybe it was just the poor quality of the pictures. IMHO this is the masterpiece of the trilogy. Its concern is the practical application of the author's ideas, and one could only wish to live or work in a space designed with this philosophy. His thinking is pragmatic AND beautiful, bringing balance and harmony to space.

Having made the case for his system of architectural and social design in his earlier work, the author here goes on to formalize a system of 253 patterns, ranging in scale from towns down to benches. Patterns 1 through 94 define a town or community; numbers 95 through 204 define (groups of) buildings; and numbers 205-253 define a "buildable building". The individual patterns are themselves evocative and inviting, and cover a myriad of human social and environmental relationships: number 1 is Independent Region, pattern 2 is Distribution of Towns, 10 is Magic of the City, 57 is Children in the City, number 62 is High Places, number 63 Dancing in the Street, 94 is Sleeping in Public, 203 Child Caves, 223 Deep Reveals, 235 Soft Inside Walls, 253 Things from Your Life.

One example of developing the pattern language for a specific project using a subset of the author's Pattern Language is that of the front porch, composed of 10 elements: private terrace on street, sunny place, six-foot balcony, outdoor room, paths & goals, ceiling height variety, columns at the corners, front-door bench, raised flowers and different chairs. Alexander gives many such examples and eloquently details the process of exploring patterns and moving between them in a search for the proper set. And that is one thing that makes this book special and fun. He does not say a 'successful' set of elements but a 'proper' set of elements. At first that might seem like a lot of hot hubris, but on reading you find that there is a reason that a balcony should be 6-feet square .... THAT is the minimum space required for people to have a comfortable discussion around a small table. It is a charming and useful way to look at one's surroundings, and each of the 253 patterns is given the treatment as the author goes on to detail each element's specifications, definition and purpose.

These expanded definitions are often quite charming; for instance, under pattern 57, Children in the City, he specifies a very safe bike path that meanders past workplaces and shops with windows so that kids can see the diversity and alive-ness of the place in which they live. Lovely idea.

While others have noted that Alexander's ideas inspired changes in software engineering, I would also like to note that the author's ideas were, in turn, most likely informed by others, such as neuroscientist Karl Lashley and, in particular, linguist Noam Chomsky. Chomsky developed the idea of a generative grammar, composed of constituent symbols, a set of rules and a set of terminal elements, which together describe all possible sentences in a language. This was considered revolutionary at the time and is quite similar to Alexander's characterization of his patterns, described as a context combined with a system of forces or rules generating an infinite number of solutions in the form of sets of specific design elements. That configuration, in turn, becomes the context for another pattern. The theory's dynamism and scalability render it very powerful indeed.

I think another interesting approach to this philosophy would be to reverse engineer our own environment. To say, Obviously there is a Pattern Language at work in the larger world in which we live, and it is decidedly in opposition to what Mr. Alexander and others, including myself, believe is preferred. What are the rules of that language? What is the context within which those elements operate? The author codifies a desirable Pattern Language. I'd like to see his principles used to turn an eye toward decodifying our own milieu. This is the kind of book that leads one to think and imagine, and isn't that a wonderful thing?

What I didn't like about this book were that neither ideas nor photographs were credited, which is frustrating for someone who wants to follow up on these ideas, and not fair to those whose work contributed to the author's. The author apologized for this in his first book, but then repeated the discourtesy here; the second time is less forgivable. Also, there is no index, which is especially painful for a librarian :-) I would have liked to have seen a more diverse selection of examples, and some attempt to address the implementation of a pattern language after more conventional designs are already in place. That said, I agree with the many others who have stated that this book changed the way they looked at their surroundings, and I'm profoundly grateful to the author for his work, which stands up well after a quarter century.

Even when mediocrity (or worse) is the order of the day, there are those voices in the wilderness who speak to a better understanding and envision a better world. In codifying an aesthetic relationship among elements of a viable, living environment and describing a system of scalable self-sustaining systems, the author joins visionaries like R. Buckminster Fuller, who bring a philosophy to architecture that is as much about living as it is about building. I would encourage anyone who is interested in architecture, design, a philosophy of organic wholeness, or creating a more humane environment, to read this informative and provocative book.
