Pint Sized Coffee Book with beautiful text & photos

As a fan of design and architecture I think this book does a superb job of demonstrating a beautiful marriage between land and structure and how attuned architects are creating ultra-effecient structures designed to conserve the environment and enhance the lives of their inhabitance. Part of my fascination with the book is my curiosity of how the architects profiled in the book through their homes do a fantastic job of making tiny spaces appear and function as a space much larger than then one would believe based on the square footage footprint alone. All in all, this book has beautiful detailed photos and well thought out text profiling each of the homes from the conception to to realization.

I bought this book for my father as a Christmas gift. He's an amateur architect and loves the nano house movement. The pictures and articles in the book are fantastic and definitely give great ideas on how to live in a small space.

However, the book itself is small but thick, and the size of the pictures is a little underwhelming. I was expecting a 12"x12" or bigger coffee table book, but the actual dimensions are about 8x8" which doesn't lend itself to big photos. The thickness of the book makes it hard to lie down on the table, and keeping it open without breaking the spine is a struggle.

Plans in general weren't that great

I didn't find the plans in this book that great. After going through the book, I looked up nano houses in google images and found way more information doing that. From now I'll will use google images before wasting my money on a book.

Looking forward to taking the exam!

It's a good book and I'm working my way through it systematically. I recommend the paper edition because you can highlight and flip to the test answers quickly at the back. It is big and thick though. It covers the material accurately and also helps you understand what will and will not be tested in the exam. I also particularly like the real-world insights it gives throughout - absolute gold dust!

There are a few disappointments: some of the test questions are almost trick-questions, requiring the development of test-taking technique rather that real knowledge to answer correctly - this is especially true of the "choose all that apply" ones, but the good news is that you get lots of practice. Also, I was disappointed that I have to remember all the frequency ranges for every band by heart. I'll do it, but it's the sort of junk information you'll forget quickly and can easily find out if you need to. That's a criticism of the CWNA syllabus itself though and not the book.

Wow... this book is absolutely incredible!!! Wish I had bought it several years ago! It answered so many questions I had, and could not find the answers to, even on the internet. Written very well, and does a great job of explaining things. A++
If you're working in RF or wireless, or you want to work in RF or wireless, you really need to read through this book. I could not be happier... said over and over while reading this book, "this was the best $50 I've spent in a long, LONG time!!!"

Essential read for CWNA-106 takers; Great vendor-neutral wireless information for others

The official book for studying for your CWNA-106 exam. I have read the book cover to cover and will attempt my exam soon. The book does a great job at covering all topics required for the exam in depth. It is a little dry, but it is a textbook after all, so no marks off for that. Real-world examples of topics are included to help to enforce these. These examples were one of the most enjoyable aspects for me - to see how the ideas, technologies, problems or solutions are experienced in real life.

I did notice that information is stated over and over again: "As you learned earlier in this chapter...", "In the previous section, we mentioned that...", etc. This happens a lot. I just skimmed through again and can find a reference to a previously discussed topic on every fourth page or so. I can see the benefit of this every once and a while, to help reinforce topics, but found that this happened too often. I bet the book could shed about 50-75 pages without these. This is my only gripe, and it is a minor one.

I had the Kindle version and I found it to be great. I thought I would hate a textbook in Kindle format but the search and highlighting tools on Kindle for PC were a breeze to use. I found it faster to jump around, and the fact that I can search keywords was great. Because of this, I actually preferred it over a physical textbook. That being said, I think it would be too cumbersome to search and jump around on my physical Kindle Keyboard.

Essentially, if you are planning on writing the CWNA-106 exam, this book is a must-read. I wouldn't attempt the exam without a cover-to-cover read, along with some practice exams for good measure. Make sure you do the 20 question tests at the end of each chapter as well.

Even if you aren't looking at writing the exam, this book provides a great vendor-neutral overview of RF theory, 802.11 standards, wireless technologies and design concepts. Its nice to learn the basics without a vendor's spin on things.

This book is definitely for the professional using InDesign CS5. Was thinking it would make a good textbook for a class I am teaching. Too detailed for a community college market.

Great information for the working professional

I'm writing this review based on the first 100 pages. It's a very dense, information-packed book, and it may be a few months before I get through all of it. I'll revise this review, if needed, when I finish.

I make my living using InDesign constantly, and I'm impressed to find so much in this book that I didn't know. (The use of the Tab special character within a table to be able to tab there instead of jumping to the next field just saved me several minutes of cursing.)

I have a personal preference for printed textbooks, and no real problem with black and white illustrations, so I'm happy I purchased the printed version.

Pariah Burke's explanations of the points he is making is very clear and understandable. He is evidently trying to cover everything that is in the program, so if you are an ID newbie, this book may seem overwhelming. Though it is not a breezy read for someone that wants to get the basics of the program quickly, I would recommend it to anyone that wants to master InDesign for an efficient workflow. This is definitely a book that will stay on my shelf as a reference after I'm done reading it.

Finally answered vexing questions I had

This book explained what's been bugging me about InDesign master pages and how to fix them. It's saved me a lot of windows. The only thing keeping me from marking this a 5-star is that, with a book so dense, a more in-depth index would have been killer. I highly recommend it, ESPECIALLY if you're entering the InDesign world from Quark XPress.

He started his career at nineteen years old as a police cadet working for a year and half before attending the Montgomery Police Academy. He turned twenty-one years old while in the academy and after graduation was assigned to third shift patrol. Throughout his career he has worked in traffic, crime scene investigation and on a high profile zero tolerance drug unit before retiring from 2nd shift patrol as a senior training officer. He retired at 39 years old and is currently employed with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in Alabama as a Crime Scene Technician. He also teaches Crime Scene Investigation to other law enforcement agencies. While with the police department, he organized the local Cops for Christ group in 1992 which led to the creation of the River Region Chaplain Service. This ministry provides chaplains to assist law enforcement officers and fire fighters with pastoral care and emotional support due to job related stress. He is certified through the International Conference of Police Chaplains (I.C.P.C) as a police chaplain and chaplain liaison.

EXCELLENT BOOK!

This book is well written and reveals very interesting aspects of police work. I am a civilian with the MPD and know alot of the people mentioned in the book. Mr. Smith's account of life on the streets opened my eyes to the types of people and situations police officers come across on a daily basis. To me, it is more interesting because of the fact that I know or am familiar with alot of the names that weren't changed. But even someone who doesn't know the people mentioned would enjoy the short stories and reflections. A highly recommended read!

This is a great insight to the daily life of a police officer. You dont realize all that they have to do. Mixed with humor and real life action, this book is a must have! If you live in the Montgomery area, you will find it interesting to see how things have changed etc. It is a good read.

Inspiring and compelling

The stories in this book give such an inspiring insight into police work that we don't normally see. The author takes us with him from the earliest days of his career through some of his funniest, scariest, and most surprising experiences, and I felt as if I were right there with him. I was able to laugh, gasp, cringe, and occasionally wipe away a tear with each episode, and my view of police officers and how they do their job has changed completely. The stories were well-written, descriptive, and compelling, and the theme of the author's faith in God allowed me to see every adventure through the eyes of a young man keeping his faith as it is tested each day. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in police work or who needs a fresh perspective on how men and women in uniform deal with the very real drama they must encounter when they answer a call for help.
