About the Author
Christopher J. Lutat, ATP [MD11, DA20], has been an airline pilot for a large global airline for more than 17 years and was a search and rescue pilot for the U.S. Coast Guard for eight years. He is a founding owner of Convergent Performance, LLC and serves as President, Government and Aerospace. Captain Lutat is also a Check Airman and has been an instructor in advanced technology, wide-body global transport aircraft since 2003.
S. Ryan Swah, ATP [MD11, LR Jet, CV A340, CV A440], is a retired U.S. Navy Captain with experience in attack, fighter, and transport aircraft. He currently flies the Boeing MD-11 for a major global airline and has held positions as a FAA Aircraft Program Designee, Line Check Airman, Proficiency Check Airman, Standards Check Airman, Aircraft Technical Pilot, Flight Standards Manager, and Senior Flight Standards Manager. Captain Swah is the glass cockpit, automation, checklist, procedures, and flight manual expert for Convergent Performance, LLC.

From Student Pilot to B747 Captain: A MUST Read

This book is a must read for any pilot operating in todays highly automated flight deck. Unlike many 'human factors' books filled with pages and pages of psycho-babble, the authors of Automation Airmainship have provided sound, useable tools which can be integrated into any line operation. Whether you are an airline pilot flying internationally in 'big iron' or a weekend pilot flying your twin cessna with only several glass components, there's something in this book for you. As a Captain at a major US airline, I have used the principles taught in this book time after time to increase the level of safety for my customers, crew, and company.

Superior Effort

Full disclosure, I know both authors. Given their considerable experience and talent, my expectation for the book was rather high.
This is not an easy topic even though the challenge has been present in civilian aviation for over thirty years. Perhaps it was only through three decades of study that a book like this could be produced. The writers capitalize on what has been learned on the subject in producing their nine principles and in this resides the great strength of the book. It is grounded in realility and takes what might have been a theoretical effort and plants it squarely in the practical.
I don't know if practioners of cockpit automation will rethink their concepts based on this book but if not, it would be an opportunity missed.

Must read for any pilot making the transition from a legacy flight deck to glass--as well as those "born" into a modern high technology cockpit. The authors extensive knowledge in this field helps take the mystery out of complex design and provide the reader with "actionable" principles to use every day.
