About the Author
Shepard Krech III is a professor of anthropology and director of the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology at Brown University. He is a past president of the American Society for Ethnohistory and has been a fellow and trustee of the National Humanities Center. His many books include The Ecological Indian and Encyclopedia of World Environmental History.

A well-researched look at an Interesting topic

This book of "ethno-ornithology" is an interesting investigation of the connection between Indians and birds in the American South.

The author shows how Native Americans used birds for practical reasons, including food and many different uses of feathers. But they also had an association with birds beyond the utilitarian. Krech shows how birds and bird-like characters figured prominently in art, decoration, spirituality, politics, and stories. It was fascinating to see which birds figured prominently in Indian culture, and conversely, which ones did not.

This book is profusely illustrated with images of birds, Indians, and artifacts. Most of the bird species mentioned in the text are also shown in paintings by Audubon, Alexander Wilson, Mark Catesby, and a few others. Paintings and photographs of Indians depict examples of bird use (especially feathers).

I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in both birds and Native Americans.

Further, any birder living in the South, or anyone strongly interested in this region's birds, should find it of interest. As background, the author also presents an overview of the bird life of the South as it was in the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, mostly through accounts by European explorers and colonists. It was eye-opening to see both what has and has not changed since then.

"Spirits of the Air" is a most excellent book!

"Spirits of the Air" is a fascinating and enjoyable book, full of information about birds and their behaviors, native peoples and their traditions, and early American explorers and their observations. The very readable text by a leading authority is richly complemented by corresponding illustrations. I would have thought a book of this quality would have been much to costly for me, but the price is affordable.

About the Author

Johannes Wheeldon is an assistant professor at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. He received his B.A. in political science from Dalhousie University, his LLM from Durham University, and his Ph.D. from Simon Fraser University in 2009. He has focused on the practical application of criminological theory in policing, courts, and corrections and explored how visual maps can assist students to understand the assumptions behind methodological approaches and research traditions. Recent work has appeared in The Journal of Criminal Justice Education, Theoretical Criminology, and Canadian Political Science Review. The Open Society Foundation funds his current work on debate, juvenile justice, and international human rights. Other scholarly interests include philosophy of justice, mixed methods, and visual criminology.

Good but narrow

Well it is nice book on how to and what not to. But the book is too narrow for general reader and presents only part of tools to develop good scinetific or general analytics. I liked it but probably expected more of tools and methods not just one scope of them.

Pretty reminder of the teachings of Abraham

This is a small book, a little larger than my hand. It has concepts taught to us by Abraham in a much more abbreviated fashion than we normally find in the CD's and DVD's. While it lacks some of the passion that gets communicated when you hear it directly from Ester, it's nice because it is bite-size, and gives you the opportunity to meditate on each thought.

Abraham has told us previously that while we have many questions, they have only one answer. While that is true, the answer is a somewhat complicated or layer message for us mere mortals. In this book they reiterate their message:

* Our emotions are our guidance system. If something feels bad that is a message not to be ignored.
* Our thoughts and our feelings create a vibrational escrow (I always want to call it an emotional escrow) that creates our future.
* Controlling our thoughts and our resulting feelings controls the vibration we offer, and therefore that which we attract.
* The universe only gives us that which we are in vibrational alignment with.
* Contrast (which to me means knowing what we don't want) helps us send "rockets of desire" for what we do want.
* We need to focus on what we want to create that vibration to be matched. We should not focus on what we do not want because that is offering a vibration which is also matched.
* The desires that our ancestors had, made the world a better place for us today.
* We can get anywhere we want to be from where we are today.
* Imagining, expecting, and remembering good things causes them to come into being.
* We aren't here just to observe the world, because in simply observing, we will get more of what we see. If it is good, it will get better. If it is bad, it will get worse. We are here to create, so by all means let's create good!

These are just some of my favorite concepts. As Abraham says, "There is much love for you here." Namaste.

Cuts right to the chase!

I have had a lot of trouble reading and understanding Esther and Jerry Hick' s bestselling "Ask and It Is Given" since I bought it two years ago. In my quest to better understand the Law of Attraction, purchasing dozens of books on the subject, I decided to buy this. I am glad I did. This cuts right to the chase. I thought I was buying a book but it's really a book of 365 quotes for each day of the year to help, if not train you, to condition your mind on just how the Law of Attraction works. They are wonderful quotes that cut to the chase of what Esther and Jerry Hicks try to explain in "Ask and It Is Given" but without the mumbo jumbo. This is a review for the Kindle edition and it is just wonderful! Other reviewers here have said there are pictures but they must be referring to the hardcover and paperback edition. I have not come across any pictures or drawings yet. I'm enjoying this so much I might end up getting the hardcover edition.

This book contains exactly the same material as Ask And It Is Given Perpetual Flip Calendar: A Calendar to Use Year After Year (Perpetual Calendar) I prefer this edition because it's smaller. I can easily fit it in my purse or find the passage I want. The art through out book is beautiful. The feeling it invokes puts me in appreciation mode effortlessly.

The Aeronaut’s Windlass shares the story of Cinder Spire as it enters the cusp of a war between the Spire Albion and the Spire Aurora. Filled with airships, steam powered and crystal technology Butcher paints a vivid world and introduces us to characters from all occupations within Cinder Spires. We enter the story as the war begins and Butcher allowed me to easily immerse myself in their story.

Butcher shares the story using third person limited perspectives of multiple characters. While Captain Grimm mentioned in the synopsis above is a focus, he is not the only key character. We also spend significant time with Cadets- Bridget Tagwynn, a butcher’s daughter and Gwen Lancaster, a daughter of privilege who is hilarious without trying to be. Then there is Lieutenant Benedict Sorellin-Lancaster, Gwen’s cousin. Two of my favorite perspectives came from Folly the Etherialist apprentice and from those of Rowl a member of the house of Nine Claws. Rowl is a smug, hilarious, brilliant cat. Yep, you heard me, a cat. He is quite the little hero and travels with Bridget as her protector. He is also heir to his clan. They all find themselves working together as a team and I enjoyed all the different dynamics they brought to the table.

The world Butcher has built is complex, beautiful and home to many unknowns. Cinder Spires is located in the mist above a planet that is uninhabitable by humans and overrun with monsters. *shivers* I will not spoil it for you, but these monsters are sure to make you freak out. Butcher does not subject the reader to large information dumps, instead we learn through the characters. When we find out about the surface of the planet and the monsters, we are out with Bridget, Folly and Rowl. Butcher effortlessly weaved it into the conversation leaving my jaw hanging. While I am unsure of where we are, the world is vaguely familiar to Victorian London particularly with the social classes.

The Aeronaut’s Windlass with its steampunk goodness and colorful character was an excellent beginning to this new series. Things are not completely revealed to us, but Butcher drop hints about characters, the past, of darkness to come and the economy. While I still have many questions in particular what prompted the war itself I was satisfied with the world and the knowledge we are given even as I crave more.
