long live to insect morphology
By tyrannomyrmex
Insects are the most numerous and widespread animlas living in terrestrial ecosystems and, of course, of great interest to human affairs. So it is not surprising that there is a huge literature on all aspects of the biology of these arthropods. And certainly, publications in areas such as genetics, ecology, biochemistry, biological control and pest management are abundant and widely distributed. However, books that emphasize the morphology of insects in an evolutionary (phylogenetic) context are scarce. Dr. Rolf Beutel and collaborators have filled a huge void with this book on morphology and phylogeny of insects. Morphology is one of the most venerable disciplines of Entomology, and now in the era of genomics came to become a “secondary” discipline. Entomologists still depend of Snodgrass, whose "Principles of Insect Morphology", published in 1935, remains as an essential reference work. And there are few works that deserve to be legacies of Snodgrass. One of them may the book of the late Chapman "Insects: Structure and Function" linking morphology with function in insects. In this scarcity is welcomed the work of Beutel et al, linking a broad and deep knowledge in external and internal morphology of insects in a phylogenetic context. The authors discuss extensively insect morphology, followed by reproduction and development, morphology glossary, traditional and modern techniques in insect morphology, phylogenetic reconstruction based on morphology and a synopsis of each and every one of the orders of living insects. In each case the authors not forge to refer to other proposed molecular phylogenies not always consistent with the morphological approaches. In the synopsis, the authors provides a useful summary of the autoapomorphies of each order. Some of the illustrations are full color 3D reconstructions of internal anatomy of some insects.
Though I suppose the book deals essentially the living fauna, would have been nice to see a little more information about extinct insects groups such as paleodictyopterans. However, this will be a must for all professionals and entomologists, especially those who do not believe that genes and phylogenomics will solve all the problems in phylogeny and systematics of insects. This book is a gem in the remarkable scientific career of Dr. Beutel, who has an impressive number of publications on the subject of morphology, most of them using sophisticated techniques to elucidate the internal anatomy of insects and their use in study of phylogenetic relationships of insects, especially the beetles and other holometabolans. And a final word: the price of the book may be considered reasonable for the pockets of students and teachers, whom we are always intimidated by the very high prices of the De Gruyter publisher.
