ARROGANT BASTARD, by Winter Renshaw

The last time my father beat me to a bloody pulp was the night he walked in on me with his woman in his bed.

To be fair, she seduced me. And to be honest, I liked it. But to CPS, I was a victim.

They shipped me to Utah where my estranged mother lived with her husband and two sister-wives. And that’s when I met her. My innocent, wholesome, perfect step-sister. Well, one of many. But Waverly stood out because just like me, we’d been fighting a losing battle our entire lives.

Falling for her was a mistake, but shit, it’s not like I ever made good decisions.

F**k being “family.” I must have Waverly Miller, and I won’t stop until she’s mine. AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is a full-length, standalone, HEA romance. Contains forbidden themes as well as religious undertones not meant to offend. Please be 18+.

Best one, yet!
By Kindle Konvert
Well, this book is the author’s best one, yet! After reading the blurb, this story turned out to be so much more than I expected it to be.

Jensen is a mistreated and physically-abused son of a power-hungry preacher. After one last violent episode, he is sent to live with his mother who disappeared when he was a small child. It turns out that she is now in a secret, polygamous marriage with a man and two sister-wives and a brood of kids. One of the kids is his step-sister, Waverley.

Waverley is, at first glance, a buttoned-up good girl. She’s also beautiful and untouched and Jensen is instantly attracted to her. However, as he gets to know her, he realises that still waters run deep and Waverley is as much a victim of her upbringing as Jensen is. Jensen makes it his mission to ‘free’ her; to open her eyes to the life choices that are available to her. Waverley is equally affected by Jensen – he makes her feel things that are alien to her. It’s almost like he’s waking her up. However, she’s biding her time, being the perfect daughter and walking a straight line, so she can earn her freedom and go away to university.

This was such an interesting novel! It was so much more than a rebellious step story. It deals with the issues of extreme religion, viewed through the eyes of a young man raised under a violent zealot’s roof. He goes from one religious household to another. Although not physically abused, everyone living in the polygamous family is repressed and constrained in their own way. The three wives and all the children live under the iron rule of one man, who decides all the house rules and fates of his children.

Jensen was a great character and, even though he’s cocky, brash and blunt, he has real depth and a lot of heart. I enjoyed seeing him break down Waverley’s barriers and shove her out of her comfort zone. He becomes the catalyst to helping her break out of her nurtured mould and become the woman that she’s supposed to be. Waverley, though raised to be submissive, is actually a strong-minded and strong-willed young woman. She, in turn, shows Jensen what it is to care for another person, offering emotional, as well as physical comfort.

This was a really great story. Would definitely recommend.

neither arrogant nor a bastard
By Justirishgirl
I enjoyed reading this story. It was different and kept my attention. I was never bored and read it in one sitting. I liked Jensen, the hero. I was glad that he was neither arrogant nor a bastard. Rather he had been physically and mentally abused by his father, who is a preacher, and abandoned by his mother and it impacted him but not to the point that he treated others poorly. When goes to live with his mother because his father almost killed him, he discovers that she is in a polygamous marriage with a man who is almost as controlling as his father. He meets Waverley, one of the children of another wife. Instantly attracted to each other, as time passes he and Waverley become closer and eventually fall in love. I loved that Jensen was faithful to Waverley, who was a virgin. It was refreshing that he did not have sex with OW after meeting her. Too many heroes do have sex with OW, claiming that they are trying to get over the heroines by have OW under them. I liked the ending.

Entertaining for the most part. But confusing and unsatisfying HEA
By Jan Edling
OK. I really don't enjoy writing bad reviews. I know it can hurt authors sales. And the truth is I liked this book. Most of it. It kept me interested. But I don't understand why the author chose to give it such a poor ending. You know she can write. She's entertained you up to this part. Then it's like someone else came in and gave it an ending. Like she gave it to some rookie and said.. "Here, you finish it. But you only have a few pages to do it in".

Yes, it's a HEA. But this HEA made zero sense. So to me it's hard to enjoy the HEA if all it does is leave you with ..... WTH?? At the risk of giving the ending away I'll say it'd be like she decided to end it this way: the h finds a magic bottle with a gene in it and she rubs it and makes 3 wishes. She doesn't explain or offer even one tiny sentence about where they found this bottle or anything. Just .... the bad people are gone and you're life will now be wonderful and great. (keep in mind there's no gene or bottle. It's just my way of avoiding spoilers).

Believe it or not I have always hated when reviewers complain that some parts of a book don't make sense. That's perfectly OK with me. But to have the HEA sooooooo ....... empty and open? Like maybe she wants you to come up with an explanation yourself.
Again, entertaining but completely unsatisfying HEA.
