This book is best followed with the Bioinformatics Specialization courses at Coursera, and I have bought this book as offline companion for the same. I will give a more detailed review once I finish all the courses and complete this and Vol 2 (Bioinformatics Algorithms: An Active Learning Approach, 2nd Ed. Vol. 2). The production values that have gone into designing this book is top notch, and the content is explained just about right to hold the attention of both biologists and computer scientists.

I really like this book, it's full of colourful diagrams and examples. Clear explanations and a fun way of explaining things.
I am also taking the related online Coursera course by UC San Diego and solving the programming problems online. Heaps of fun.
