In this lively history of thinking about what lies behind thinking, Oxford-trained cognitive scientist Claxton (Hare Brain, Tortoise Mind) ranges across societies from ancient Egypt to 20th-century Vienna and individual thinkers from Aristotle to Eugene Gendliln to trace the long development of three broad narratives that have been used to explain the mind: the supernatural, the psychological and the biological. The author's purpose in this erudite intellectual history is not to settle the question of what lies behind our conscious selves, but to explore the richness of the untidy notions of the unconscious we have inherited. His summaries of the ideas of poets, priests, philosophers and psychiatrists are colorful and brisk but fair, and his criticisms, notably of Descartes as hyper-rational and Freud as unoriginal, are balanced by assessments of their contributions. As Claxton's survey approaches the late 20th century, he begins to speak for himself, painting an extended and especially vivid portrait of a human brain that might be capable of generating poetry and madness without angels or the id. He concludes that no single account can fulfill the complex social purpose of the stories we tell ourselves about the underlying quirkiness of our minds, but he argues persuasively that we can live fuller, happier lives by embracing that waywardness. 24 b&w illustrations.

The unconscious has had a long and chequered history. For at least the last 4,000 years, societies have concocted comforting fables in the face of the recurrent puzzles of human existence—death, dreaming, madness, possession, inspiration—that invariably rely on some notion of the unconscious. Supernatural "fairy stories" need some internal proxy or contact point through which the influence of demons and spirits can flow. And without such gods and forces, some psychological machinery is needed to take over their work. But what is the unconscious? Is it "God's viceroy," the soul? Is it the locked ward of Freudian desire? Is the subliminal mind the source of the sublime emotions of the Romantics? Is it the mental microchip of cognitive science? Or is it simply the brain?

This book is such a breath of fresh air. Abosultlely full of great tips and awesome advice that i can actually fit into my life.
Great food and nutrition tips, stress management., work outs i can do at home. AND it treats me like an actual normal human being.
Can't recommend highly enough, i feel like this book has changed my life already!
And i'm getting Jennifer Lawrence's personal trainer - so that cant be bad!

I received this book along with beizi corrector as a gift from my friend. I must say that this combo is a real find. What a great entrance point to healthy lifestyle, better posture and feeling good. Hopefully I will be hooked by this inspirational book's tips and posture routines for as long as possible - I really love my past few weeks!
Definitely recommend both.

This review is coming from a diet addict. Some one who's tried EVERYTHING and ANYTHING just to stop those diets and gain it all back PLUS SOME. It took 10 years for me to realize that fad diets DO NOT WORK. Sure, you'll lose 5 pounds in one week, but it is unrealistic to think you won't gain the weight back once you stop that diet. Let me just say that this book is NOT ABOUT A DIET, which is why I love it. Small/realistic changes = long term success. The authors are not asking you to start a crazy diet or workout 3 hours a day, or give up your favorite food. They are setting you up to make healthier choices and to listen to your body. How many of us eat because we are bored? I know I do. I think of food as a reward, and it is horrible for me. This book encourages you to stop and think about what you are about to eat and the reasoning behind it. I am flying through this book because I find it so interesting and helpful, but I plan to re-read it and take notes. Also, this is not a cookbook, so I am not sure why people are complaining about the lack of recipes? They do include some, but not as many as a cookbook would. If your looking for guidance on how to change your life and be a healthier person overall... this is the book for you.

Peter M. F. Sichel, a fourth-generation wine merchant, found the path he was destined to walk interrupted by the Nazis while growing up as a Jew in Germany. He moved to France in 1939 but was imprisoned as an enemy alien at the outbreak of World War Ii. When he was released, he hid in the Pyrenees before reaching the United States in 1941.

After joining the Army, he served with the U.S. Office of Strategic Services, sending spies into Germany, before becoming a senior official with the Central Intelligence Agency, where he served in key positions in Berlin, Hong Kong, and Washington.

In this memoir--which needed to be cleared by the Cia--he describes how the Nazis took over Germany, the odd attitude of German Jews to being Jewish, the fault lines in U.S. intelligence during the Cold War, and the life lessons he learned in the wine business.

About the Author

Peter M. F. Sichel was educated in Germany and England and fled France in 1941. He spent seventeen years with the U.S. Office of Strategic Services and the Central Intelligence Agency in some of the top hot spots of the Cold War before joining his family wine business.

Great Book By A Guy With An Incredible Story To Share

Fascinating book by a fascinating man. I was in Bordeaux with Mr. Sichel several years ago and he told me about this book when it was being written. This is a very cool story about an incredible life. A refugee from the Nazis, an OSS operative and the man who turned an entire generation on to Blue Nun is Peter Sichel. A must read.

Peter Sichel grew up in Mainz, Germany, in a sociable, broad-minded, cosmopolitan family that recalls Nabokov’s Russian childhood––and exile. His family, which was Jewish, had the inner resources and the means to dodge the worst depradations of the Holocaust, but it was a difficult road to safety, eventually, through Spain to New York City. Young Sichel immediately joined the Army, was soon recognized for his value (he was smart, he spoke three languages fluently and had connections all over Europe) as an intelligence officer, and after the war became one of the founding members of OSS/CIA, heading the Base of Berlin post, arguably the most interesting place in the world at the time. He endured a rancorous, baseless investigation by the FBI, took the top post in Hong Kong, and retired to run and expand his family’s ancestral wine business, and to become a noted wine expert and generous friend to many in New York.

His writing on all things––the Nazis, his Judaism, his relatives, espionage, Washington politics and people he met along the way, from the worker to the world leader––is clear-eyed and even-handed, a great read for anyone who is interested in the political storms of the 20th century, seen close-up from many vantage points. For those interested in wine, the book offers a primer in the history and appreciation of wines from all over the world, especially those from Bordeaux. The book is entertaining, breezy, and wise.

A Superb Read

A fascinating memoir by someone who experienced WW II and the Cold War as an insider. Peter knew and worked with all the major players during his OSS and CIA days. Following government service he dedicated himself to his family's wine business in Germany, France, the US and the Far East. Again, he worked with all the major players in that industry and provides us with interesting insights into vinification and the business aspects of the wine industry. Just as interesting are his early life experiences as a Jewish youth growing growing up in Nazi Germany and his escape through France, Portugal and eventually to the US. If this book reads like a spy novel, it is because that is exactly what it is.
