Hard to get into the act!

This is one of my favorite authors. However, I must say that this book was very difficult to get into. The message was focused around women taking their roles in God's theater. I do not feel that this was one of the best organized books. I consider myself an avid reader and this book was just very difficult to get through. I found myself several times having to put it down becuase my mind would drift. I was dissapointed in this book. I kind of got a sense that maybe Serita wrote most of it. Her Princess Within has the same affect on me.

A Platitude on Every Page

I have loved listening to Bishop Jakes preach since he was still in his little church in West Virginia. I've watched his programs and listened to his tapes. I bought this book on his name alone. What a disappointment. God's Leading Lady is like one continuous pep rally. Rah! Rah! Rah! Sister, you can do it. Go! Go! Go! "Step out of the shadows and into the light". "Don't believe that you are alone no matter how desolate and bare your life's theater feels". "You must move beyond the Potter's shelf into the fire of greatness". "It is time you soar". "All the world is your stage--step up and allow yourself to shine".

I agree wholeheartedly with the message of this book. As women, we do put shackles on ourselves or allow others to do so. I don't think the author did enough to explain how to soar, just to have faith and do it. I couldn't get into the message or the point of the book because I was exhausted from wading through paragraph after paragraph of rhetoric and tedium. The book did get better as it went along, but not enough to warrant the money spent.

Excellent Translation

Michael R. Katz' translation of DEVILS into English for Oxford is excellent. Conveys Dostoevky's meaning without pedanticism or distortion. Highly recommended. The value of the novel itself goes w/o question. I'll just say that Dostoevsky presents a devastating critique of modern political liberalism which is highly applicable to the U.S. today. I wanted to add that this translation included the chapter called "Stavrogin's confession" which was left out of the first Russian edition because it was too offensive and/or controversial. This edition includes this chapter where Doestoevky put in in the original manuscript. To my knowledge, this is the first, perhaps only, English translation to do so. A previous translation included the chapter as an appendix, but this includes it in its original place.

Most Prophetic Novel of All Time

Most readers probably know that the character of the amoral nihilist Peter Verkhovensky is based--not too loosely, either--on the real-life figure of Sergei Nechayev (pronounced neech-aye-eff), who collaborated with the anarchist Bakunin while they were both hiding out in Western Europe. (Bakunin finally learned that Nechayev was a total fanatic who'd stop at nothing--even blackmail, betrayal, and murder--and disassociated himself with Nechayev, warning friends against him.) Nechayev murdered a member of his conspiratorial group, suspecting the victim of betrayal, a scene portrayed in the novel. What most readers may not know is that Lenin was fascinated with the career of Nechayev (who was eventually caught for the murder and extradited to Russia, where he died in prison), called him a "titanic revolutionary," and said that Bolsheviks should try to find everything Nechayev had ever written, and study it. Dostoevsky knew he'd be called a "reactionary" for implying that such ends-justify-means fanaticism--terror and immorality in the name of a "better world" to come--must end in utter destruction. But he nevertheless went ahead and wrote this novel to illustrate this theme. And Lenin, admiring Nechayev, did exactly what the great novelist foresaw--he created a monstrous tyranny that destroyed Russia, perhaps (as we are now seeing) even beyond repair.
We admire Orwell's 1984 for its insights and innovative ideas, but THE DEMONS turned out to be the more accurate and prophetic book of the two. Russian novels tend to be long on characterization and short on plot--as well as very lengthy--but don't let that deter you from reading this masterpiece.
Incidentally, I once queried the companies who write student guides for novels (i.e., Cliff's Notes; Monarch Notes) about why no such guide had EVER been written for this book (even though they do exist for Dostoevsky's CRIME AND PUNISHMENT), and even though the collapse of Communism should have produced a renewed academic interest in THE DEMONS. The reply was that professors assign Dostoevsky as class reading less and less, and that very few assign this book, so there wouldn't be enough of a market for such a guide. Class reading, hell -- the profs know full well how devastating this novel would be to their own efforts to instill their own utopian political beliefs in their students. As Malcolm Muggeridge once said, everything that happened in 20th century Russia was predicted in this novel. This was what originally inspired me to read it, and he was right.

Dostoevsky's summit

This is the most "dostoevskian" of all Dostoevsky's novels. Seething with grotesque and violent carnival scenes, with metaphysics on rampage ( a Russian specialty and oxymoron ), "The Devils" remains a unique species. Superficially a satyrical and political novel, it evolves and unfolds into incredible cross-breed of parable and pneumatological/visionary drama. The principal characters (Stavrogin, Verkhovensky, Kirilov, Shatov, Darya,..) have by far transgressed limits of "normal" human experience and are acting their obsessions in a hallucinatory quasireality which remains more "real" than any constructed by standard realistic procedures. Hailed as the first serious political novel, even prophecy of the Russian revolution- this is a judgement I cannot assent to. Communist revolutions were executed by iron-willed ideologues who didn't have any scruples, let alone spiritual vexations; monomaniacal mystics like Kirilov or hysterics like Verkhovensky jr. have nothing in common with efficient bureaucrats and human machines described in works by Pasternak, Koestler or Solzhenitsyn. All in all, "The Devils" remains a unique bodying forth of nihilist malaise that was to become the dominant 20th century "state of mind". If it is a prophecy, then the subject is upheaval of the whole texture of Western cultural/spiritual/political life, not the wreckage of Czarism.

His institution, the Tao Mountain School of Traditional Thai Massage and Herbal Medicine, offers courses in the Shivago Lineage of Thai Massage. He also teaches Thai massage at the Virginia School of Massage in Charlottesville, VA, the Baltimore School of Massage, and at the BSM’s satellite campus in York, PA.

The finest text available, bar none

This is one of a series of three books; the others cover the spiritual and herbal traditions associated with ancient Thai massage.

Many things set this wonderful text apart: it is accurate, clear, and concise, written by someone with a deep and genuine love and understanding of the subject, the culture, and the tradition. Photographs and descriptions of the individual postures are superior to anything else available.

Please note: no book can ever, nor should it, replace personal instruction. Personal instruction is required for safety and full understanding of the very subtle art of Thai massage, and the pacing of flow and fluidity of transition between postures cannot be taught any other way other than to study under a master and receive thoughtful correction. But this is an excellent text to refresh the memory for postures not used so often and the most valuable resource you will find on the history and background of Thai massage and the mental preparation overlooked by other authors and even respectable teachers.

All of his works are composed and offered in true Metta spirit. As Americans learn about the amazing benefits of traditional Thai massage it is becoming the trendy treatment for spas to offer. Unfortunately for both practitioner and recipient, the importance of a Metta practice and spiritual preparation are entirely overlooked in the quickie courses that crop up around every new popular trend. This book can help fill that gap, so at least new therapists may understand that it is not so much the protocol of movement but the prayers and intention behind them that actually make possible the real healing magic.

If you are considering the serious study of traditional Thai massage this book is both an excellent introduction for beginners and a valuable reference text for the experienced therapist.

Okay, here is the deal. I have read a gazillion books on Thai massage. Okay, maybe not quite that many, but sometimes it feels like it. Physical Biochemistry: Principles and Applications

Provides a great overview of a variety of biochemical techniques. Details the instrumentation as well as many possible applications for each technique. Describes the theory in an easy-to-understand manner with a valuable amount of detail, however, if you are looking for an in depth explanation of theory for any one particular technique, this is not the book for you. If you want a simple, detailed overview of many important biochemical techniques, I found this book extremely helpful.

Donald C. Baumer is professor of Government at Smith College. He is coauthor of The Politics of Unemployment (CQ Press, 1985) with Carl Van Horn, and has published several articles on employment policy and Democratic leadership in the Senate. He recently completed a three-year term as Dean for Academic Development at Smith College. Carl E. Van Horn is professor of public policy and the director of the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University's Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. He is the author of No One Left Behind: Economic Change and the American Worker (Twentieth Century Fund, 1996) and the editor of The State of the States (CQ Press, 1989).

Shockingly Poor

The text is written in a classic style - and thus has absolutely nothing to add to the educational conversation. While the text is dotted with interesting facts (e.g. pencil lead has clay added to it...) the text is written poorly and not recommended to anyone. For instance, on page 4, the authors or editors suggest that a "molecule is therefore the smallest particle that can be used to identify a compound" On page 5 the authors continue to refer to compounds made of molecules and molecules are made of atoms (and they do use only, classically molecular compounds as exemplars, to the their credit). Yet in the next paragraph they introduce two types of compounds... molecular compounds and ionic compounds, with no indication or reference to the term formula unit to describe ionic compounds. They describe ionic compounds made of ions but never differentiate between the two issues of molecular and ionic substances. Granted, chemical terminology may be vague at best, but this approach is just a bit sloppy and may ultimately lead to confusion later on. The authors or editors then introduce the idea that the term molecule may also refer to elements... again, while accurate .. would it not be better to take some time to discuss the idea of what is meant by such terminology operationally and functionally, before tossing it out in front of students? Further on in the text, the authors/editors launch into a passage for the mass of an atom, (p.11) yet never quite differentiate between the mass of an atom vs. the mass number of an atom ... and they simply begin to calculate the atomic mass for an element, using isotopic notation and pulling from thin air the measured mass of each isotope. They never explain why the measured mass is often different from the mass number. I can think of many first year students looking for support, being confused by the slight of hand and lack of rigor to building a constructed concept. The diagrams are standard at best and again, fail to add significantly to the interpretations of the linguistic portions of the text. The diagrams aren't poor - but certainly not anything special. The end-of-chapter questions are geared, primarily towards the application of definition... most are very rote. There are very few interesting questions forcing students to think, very few questions looking toward the applications of concepts ... Were the copyright not written clearly to be 2011, one would think that this text had been written in the 1990's or worse, the 1980's ... Wiley and the authors miss the point of where chemistry education is moving .... how did it ever get to a 5th edition? I need to return this text.

May be the worst book ever written on the subject

This book is absolutely dreadful, and when it is combined with its counter part work book, it is nothing short agony. If any professor or instructor uses this text, take a different class. This book is good at compromising concepts and may leave you feeling you lost knowledge. That bad.
