An Extraordinary Mystery

Robin:
Sometimes, when an idea just won’t go away, you need to pay attention to how God is nudging you. That’s what happened with this book.

Tricia and I have been friends for almost two decades, and both of us are writers. But our life stories as well as our love stories are radically different. Beyond writing, we do have one interesting commonality: both of us prayed for our future husbands when we were teens. But how did that add up to our writing a book together? Three incidents convinced us we should…

The first moment of inspiration fell on me with a weighty sense of urgency one bright November afternoon. I was in Brazil, standing in front of three hundred teen girls in a school cafeteria. My Christy Miller and Sierra Jensen novels for teens have been translated into Portuguese, and the teachers at this school use the books as part of their curriculum. That meant all the girls had read the books. When my husband and I entered the cafeteria, the girls greeted us with a wave of screams as if we were the real Christy and Todd all grown up and visiting them in Brazil.

To quiet down the screaming girls, I asked the translator to invite them to ask questions. One of the girls raised her hand and popped up from her seat. In Portuguese she asked me what she and her friends should do since the boys in Brazil weren’t reading my books.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

She spoke passionately as the translator beside me explained.

“She says that, after reading your books, she and her friends are making good decisions. They’ve given their lives to Christ and now want to stay pure and save themselves for their future husbands. But, you see, the boys of Brazil are not reading these books. They are not making these same decisions. She wants to know what can be done about that.”

My heart pounded. Every face in that cafeteria was fixed on me, waiting for an answer. The young woman had just identified a global problem for our present generation of Christian women. I had heard this frustration voiced many times in letters and e-mails I had received from readers over the years. But no one had ever asked me what could be done to change this dilemma of an unbalanced ratio between God-honoring young women and their male contemporaries who were slow to seek God. What could I tell her?

The words that came out of my heart were, “You can start praying for your future husband now.”

The translator gave her my answer, and a reverent hush fell over the room. Before me was a troop of willing but untrained young women ready to enter the warzone to fight for the young men. But how?

I wished then that I had something more to offer those girls. It’s one thing to tell them to pray and another thing to come alongside and show them what that looks like. If only, I thought, a book existed. I wished one of my nonfiction writer friends would hurry up and write it. None of them seemed to have a passion for such a book.

The second defining moment came two years later. Tricia and I were at a writers’ retreat in California. During the afternoon break, we headed out to the pool. I settled in a lounge chair and wrote notes in my journal for a novel I was working on. Tricia succumbed to the luxurious autumn sunshine and floated off into a deep sleep.

Suddenly she woke up, turned to me, and said, “What?” as if I’d been talking to her while she slept.

I looked at her and spoke an unpremeditated thought. “Tricia, we need to write a book together.”

“Okay.” She didn’t even blink before sinking back into her afternoon lull. A moment later her head rose again. “What are we supposed to write about?”

“I have no idea.”

The gentle notion flitted past me as softly as it had fallen on Tricia. We caught the little inspiration the way an artist would reach for a floating feather or a child would bend to pick up a pale blue pebble and tuck it in a pocket.

Over the next year or so we periodically pulled the small inspiration out of our pockets and talked about what we should write. We had lots of ideas, as all creative people do. But the affirmation and direction wasn’t there. So we waited, and we prayed…

The third moment of inspiration came with such defining clarity we knew what the book was to be about.

Tricia and I were in Montana, preparing to speak at a women’s retreat. The night before the retreat we sneaked off to a lodge for some last-minute planning. I entered the lodge first while Tricia parked the car in the snow. A darling little strawberry blond toddler trotted over to me, put up his arms, and allowed me to scoop him up. His surprised young mom told me his name was Toby, he was eighteen months old, and he was usually not that friendly with strangers. Toby patted my face.

Tricia entered, and Toby’s mother froze. She stared at Tricia and in a shaking voice said, “It’s you! You’re the one who spoke at the luncheon two years ago.”

Tricia spoke often at events for teenage girls and women in Montana, so I doubted she would remember this particular young woman from a luncheon two years ago. The mom said, “Do you remember that you talked about being a teen mom and that you prayed God would send you a Christian husband?”

Tricia nodded.

“I did the same thing. I prayed and…” She leaned in closer. “I don’t know if you remember my telling you this after the luncheon, but I had just found out I was pregnant.”
“
I remember,” Tricia said.
 
“I was scheduled for an abortion just a few days later.” The young woman gazed at Toby cuddled up in my arms. “But after I heard your story and what you said about how God answered your prayers, I cancelled the appointment for the abortion, and I prayed for a husband, just like you did.”

Her smile widened, and tears formed in her eyes as she told Tricia, “I always wanted to see you again so I could tell you that God answered my prayers. He brought an amazing Christian guy into my life. He loves me, and he loves my son. We’ve been married for almost a year. When I think about what my life would be like right now if I hadn’t heard your story and did what you said…”

By then we were all hugging and crying and hugging some more. Toby climbed into Tricia’s arms and received her cuddles and kisses. We couldn’t stop crying. It was such a beautiful moment. The room seemed full of light and hope.

After Toby and his mama went their way, Tricia and I sat together in stunned silence. We both knew this was it—this
was the theme of the book we needed to write together: praying for your future husband. We also knew we were the two unlikely novelists being invited to pour our hearts into this project. And so we did.

As we wrote, what tumbled from our hearts surprised us. We didn’t compose a handbook on techniques or formula for
effective prayer. Through the ages many wonderful such books have been written. Instead, what we saw forming, as we met together to pray and write, was a book anchored with true stories about what happens when women pray for their future husbands and the ways God answers those prayers.

Both of us agreed to tell our own stories on these pages. This took some courage. Dozens of other women gave us permission to tell portions of their stories as well—how they prayed, how God chose to answer, and how their lives changed in the process. This took courage for them as well. We pulled from our Bibles and journals favorite scriptures and excerpts. These quotes worked perfectly to lace the chapters together.

As the book took shape, we discovered that prayer is an extraordinary mystery.

This sacred privilege of communicating with our Heavenly Father is more than a cozy, open invitation to come to Him
anytime, anywhere. Even though His ears are open to the cries of His children 24/7, prayer is more than that. Prayer is also an act of obedience. We are exhorted to pray for others and to pray without ceasing.

Neither Tricia nor I pretend to have prayer all figured out. What we do know is that God hears. He sees. He knows us. He cares more than we can ever comprehend. And most important of all, God answers prayer.

Perhaps you’ve noticed that oftentimes the way God answers prayers isn’t what we expect. We look back years later and see that what God did was oh so much better than what we first envisioned when we sent our heartfelt requests heavenward. He created us, and He desires the best for us. God always gives His best to those who leave the outcomes with Him.

Another, even more amazing mystery is that when we pray for someone else, we change. All of us were made both to give love and to receive love. When your heart connects through prayer to the One who is the source of true love, you’ll find that praying for your future husband will wondrously result in your heart being changed. And when your heart is changed, your life is transformed.

I like the book but I could do without the endless ...

I like the book but I could do without the endless stories for an example.I was expecting maybe one or two stories but its stories in EVERY chapter. Often times, the story takes up most of the chapter with a small section on how you can somewhat relate. I like the sections that gave you prayers for your husband and some of the discussion questions. It more so gave me direction on where and what I should pray for him about and what sections I need to focus on so that what I want meets what he needs. It was a meh book.

It works :) It is by GRACE I'm blessed with a good husband, through faith.

I got this book after I got out of a relationship that was bad from the beginning. I knew I needed help to change. I needed wisdom and I needed God's help. This book was very interesting to read, and I looked forward to reading a chapter every night. I loved the authors' personal stories. The book brought me closer to God. I said the prayers with faith, knowing that's what God wanted for me.
I read this book in the fall of 2011. In November 2011 I first met my husband, in February we actually started talking to each other, and by September of 2012 we were married. Now it's April of 2013 and I'm so happy knowing God put us together, he has a great plan for us, and that I have a husband that loves God and can therefore truly love me.
God wants us to cry out to him and give him our cares! "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart."
Another book I recommend is "Secrets of an Irresistible Woman: Smart Rules for Capturing His Heart." by Michelle McKinney Hammond. I read a lot of Christian dating books that just didn't work, or even made things even worse with their legalism, but the "Secrets" book truly did have amazing secret keys of wisdom that can be applied to any relationship and anything, really.

This is a Fabulous book! I am single and 29 years old and it doesn't just say all of the typical things you hear at my age: "He will come when you least expect it." and "Give it to God." - It's God centered, but truly a hopeful book that not only helps you pray for your future husband, but helps you improve yourself as a person and daughter of the King. I have read it twice now, and have bought several more copies to give as gifts to the women in my life I love the most. I only wish there was a male version of this I could give my brother!

Decent, but majorly flawed

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley.

Take a look through the other reviews and you'll find everything you need to know really. This book is meant to be a trashy, silly, gory throwback to the exploitative horror movies of the 80's, and it does that. For the most part, I found that it captured the sleazy spirit of the movies it was trying to emulate pretty well.

The writing and formatting has a serious "first draft" feeling to it. Some of the mistakes/clunky sentences/weird formatting made me wonder if anyone even bothered to proofread this book, or if the first draft was written and printed the next day. Another thing that definitely got in the way of my enjoyment was the sexism that ran through nearly every scene. In a book that's meant to be trashy, I can overlook a lot, but I can't recall a single scene featuring a woman that didn't include some kind of abuse, objectification, or any other crude and unnecessary details. Even if you don't find it personally objectionable ("It is meant to be sleazy" you could argue), it's incredibly repetitive .

It's a decently fun and amusing book, just one with problems that are too hard to ignore. 2.5 stars.

Not the Bourbon Kid...but Great Nonetheless!

Let me first say that if you have read my reviews on the other books by Anonymous, my review of this book will come as no surprise. And yes, I am the "John from Ohio" that loves Sanchez for which Sanchez: A Christmas Carol was dedicated. This book is predictable from a story line standpoint in that there is much violence. There is also more sex in this one which is not surprising since the story involves a whorehouse. However, the best part of the book was the writing style of Anonymous. I love his writing style in that there is very little fluff. I like a story that does not build the characters much and gets right to the action. This book begins with action and it does not stop; just like the other books. The story line was not something new but the way it was written and the pace of the book make it a quick and most enjoyable read.

I must also say that there were many times that I laughed out loud. There were several parts in the book for which I literally laughed for minutes and was not able to continue reading until I stopped laughing. Chapter 6, the entire chapter, had me in tears. But there was one reference to the Naked Gun movie, a movie that I love, that had me laughing hysterically. I will not spoil the reference but it is obscure which makes it all the more laughable. If you know Anonymous, then you know that he loves to make references to the 1980s both in movies and in music. I am a child of the 1980s and absolutely love the references.

This is a good story and it is fast paced. It does have some twists and turns but the outcome is predicable. However, let that not stop you from reading this book. Again, as with the other books, you must suspend reality for a little bit and with the state of things today that is not a bad thing. Suspend reality and just enjoy the ride, again..... just like the Book with No Name, Eye of the Moon, Devil's Graveyard, Book of the Dead, and yes, Sanchez: A Christmas Carol. This book is not as good as the others; mainly because the Bourbon Kid and, most importantly, Sanchez are not involved. Despite that fact, this was a good book. I enjoyed it very much and read it in under a week. I would like to see more books about the Red Mohawk.

And lastly, this book has even more references to my favorite thing that never gets old and is always funny - farts and the functions of the lower intestines! Always funny! Enjoy.

Brilliant Cheese

A very cleverly written comedy/horror story in the Tarantino/Rodriguez style reminiscent of "Planet Terror".

You start with a serial killer in the town of B Movie Hell with a skeleton mask and a red mohawk. Add to this an "off the books" alcoholic agent looking to stop him. Mix in a brothel called the Beaver Palace, run by the town owner and ex porn producer, with girls who love movies like Dirty Dancing. And then top it off with a town of dodgy locals who are willing to kill to keep secrets. It's a cult classic just waiting to be made into a movie. (And the good news is that's on the cards...)

The writing in this book is subtle yet doesn't hold back. What needs to be said for the sake of the book is put out there, yet the clever innuendos and references to 80s and 90s horror movies make you laugh (sometimes maniacally). Cheesy gems pop up all over-from calling the major lake in the town Lake Flaccid (yes the porn producer named it) to a very droll "and out of the blue" in italics. Who uses that anymore?

A few mistakes crept in like using "you" instead of "your" or using "titled" instead of "tilted", but the writing style will keep you on your toes.

As you can imagine there is plenty of blood, guts and sex in this-just missing the good old rock 'n roll. Some questions in the story are left for the reader to fill in, but this doesn't detract from the main storyline. The characters and carnage they create make this well worth reading-recommended for those with a wry sense of humour.

The main goal of this Sociology for a New Century Series text is to show unity within the diversity of activities called social research. The first part of the book tackles questions like "What is social research?" "How does it differ from journalism, documentary film-making, or laboratory research in the natural sciences?" and "What is the researcher's obligation to those he or she is studying?" The book also covers the how the various goals of social researchers shape the strategies they use and the representations of social life they construct. The latter part of the book is structured around the typical emphases of each tradition: qualitative research on commonalities, comparative research on diversity, and quantitative research on relationships among variables. These are not rigid divisions and research designs often blend aspects of each tradition in creative ways. Regardless of the approach, the process of representing social life through research involves a dialogue of ideas ("theory") and evidence ("data"). The model of social research put forth by Ragin and Amoroso is not as restrictive as the scientific method and encompasses social research ranging from research examining the complexities of everyday life to research investigating the power of transnational processes.

About the Author
The primary goal of Charles Ragin, social scientist and innovative methodologist, is to develop methods that help students and researchers unravel causal complexity in their research. This has led to his developing and championing the use of set-theoretic methods in the social sciences, most notably, his Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and fuzzy set analysis. In a recent review article in Contemporary Sociology entitled "The Ragin Revolution" (Vaisey review), sociologist Stephen Vaisey describes Ragin's work as a "principled alternative" to quantitative analysis (which assumes away casual complexity) and qualitative case-based methods (which lack tools for generalizing across cases.) Many who have adopted Ragin's methods believe that these techniques combine the strength of both quantitative and qualitative methods, while transcending their limits.

This is the first book any aspiring social scientist should read

Over the past 15 years or so, sociology and political science have converged towards the methodological standards of positive economics. This trend has undeniably produced several positive effects. (For example, in Europe, it has forced social scientists to come down of their intellectualist/ideological pedestal and work through the difficult bits of research.) Nevertheless, it has also come at the expense of (a) rigorous interpretive work, and (b) careful theorizing.

This (old-ish) book should be read carefully, for it can greatly help fix these probolems without jeopardising the benefits of positivism.

When one reads other standard books on methodology (e.g. King et al.), one is left with two false impressions, namely that (1) qualitative research aims at more or less the same thing as quantitative research, and (2) "science" is about method. This book demonstrates the falsity of the first point. (For a demonstration of the falsity of the second point, one should turn to standard micro-economics books or maths-for-economics books, such as Nicholson & Snyder or Chiang, and ponder on the fact that it does not make sense to test hypotheses that are not derived from the same logically consistent assumptions.)

Where others would make you think that all kinds of social scientific research are about finding regularities (and perhaps their causes), Ragin warns you of the complementarities between that kind of research and more "grounded" research that aims, for example, at interpreting significant events, or at discovering the objective function(s) that different kinds of actors seek to maximize. More, he makes it crystal-clear that, although qualitative research may sometimes come close to anthropology, it is not exempt from presenting and justifying its procedures. In other words, if the standard mainstream vision � la King et al. is not your cup of tea, do not think that you're exempt from methods: Ragin is here to remind you of the basic steps that you must take, and to drive you through the main works that you should read and work with.

My only critique is that this book needs a new edition. Unless a new edition comes out, read this one, but bear in mind that some techniques have evolved over the past 15 years.

Excellent introduction

This is one of the best general introductions to methods in the social sciences, covering qualitative and quantitative approaches, and also introducing readers to Ragin's own qualitative comparative analysis, which is designed to rigorously analyze configurations of cases that are too small to be analyzed statistically but larger than the one or several depth cases of ethnography.

I've used it for many years in classes on methods at the University of Wisconsin.

It's too bad the "student" above who gave this a single star can't tell the difference between reviewing a book and reviewing its seller.

About the Author
Marianne Celce-Murcia (Ph.D. in Linguistics, 1972) is Professor Emerita of Applied Linguistics and TESL at the University of California, Los Angeles, where for 30 years she taught primarily graduate students, preparing to be language teachers and researchers. Beyond her work at UCLA, she taught in and administered English language programs in Nigeria (1964-1966), Egypt (Fall, 1980), Canada (Summer, 1983), and Armenia (2003-2007). She has lectured and led workshops all over the U.S. and in many other countries as well. In addition to her co-authorship (with Diane Larsen-Freeman) on the three editions of "The Grammar Book," she is co-editor (with Donna Brinton and Marguerite Ann Snow) of the fourth edition of "Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language" (2014) and series co-editor (with Maggie Sokolik) of the five-volume, content-based "Grammar Connection" series (2008-2009), all with Cengage Learning, who (as Heinle & Heinle) presented her with their lifetime achievement award in 1997. At UCLA Marianne was honored for distinguished teaching both as a graduate student (1964) and as a professor (1976).

Diane Larsen-Freeman is Professor Emerita of Education, Professor Emerita of Linguistics, and Former Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also a Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Dr. Larsen-Freeman has been a conference speaker in over 60 countries of the world and has published over 100 articles in her areas of interest. Her Heinle/Cengage titles include "The Grammar Book: Form, Meaning, and Use for English Language Teachers" (third edition, 2015, co-authored with Marianne Celce-Murcia), "From Grammar to Grammaring" (2003, authored), and the fourth edition of "Grammar Dimensions: Form, Meaning, and Use" (2007, Series Director). From 1980-1985, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was Editor of the journal "Language Learning." In 1997, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, she was selected by ESL Magazine as one of "the ESL pioneers." In 2000, she received the lifetime achievement award from Heinle & Heinle.

Excellent book for ESL teachers

This book has been a classic reference on English grammar, structure and usage ever since the 1983 first edition. It is comprehensive, thorough, and clear. The organization of the topics is a model for teaching. For my own ESL teaching I frequently look here for detailed explanations and examples which can be found nowhere else. The second edition has updated the grammar treatment according to the latest theory, is even more methodical than the first edition, and introduces valuable new topics.

Now pay attention, because you might not want this book at all! It's a technical reference book for English teachers with good prior training. Before you spend a lot of money on it, make sure it's what you want! Don't expect it to be something it has no intention of being. It's not a textbook for learners, and it's not for casual readers, beginners, or ESL students. People with no training in linguistics or grammar will find it above their level, so be warned! There are many more useful and cheaper books for you out there.

If you're an English teacher or planning to be one, if you're really interested in the "why" of grammar and usage, and if you don't mind detailed technical explanations, then you will find "The Grammar Book" invaluable. It adds to your understanding of every topic, offers fascinating insights into the workings of language, and has really useful examples everywhere.

The industry standard, for good reason.

Exceptionally thorough book, some would say TOO thorough...but it's easy to skip over the parts that might seem excessively academic or overcomplicated.

What sets this book apart from other grammar reference books is that after the authors exhaustively explain each grammatical structure, they then suggest ways/examples to TEACH it, and not just teaching the form (which is relatively easy and mostly useless) but more valuably, teaching the USE or functionality of the structure.

Very glad I chose this book for my English Applied Linguistics course.

Great resource

I bought this book for a masters-level class I took in how to teach grammar to ESL students. Nearly everyone in the class agreed that we should have been given this book at the start of our academic careers. This is the information few of us had as undergrads. It would have made many of those linguistics classes much easier to understand, and it would have been a terrific resource when we were writing papers about syntax and other topics. The in-depth analysis is extremely helpful for anyone who wants or needs to know more about how the English language works.

Die Strukturierung und die Komposition des Romans zeigen den Gesamtaufbau des Werks und die inhaltliche Fokussierung des Autors deutlich auf, das auf das herausragendste Merkmal des Romans abgestimmt ist: Die Kommunikation zwischen Erz�hler und der Hauptfigur der Biographie, Hans Frank („Der Vater“), sowie der Nebenfigur Brigitte Frank.

Der Hauptbestandteil des Kommunikationsprozesses ist die Anklage des Erz�hlers, die sich konsequent durch den gesamten Roman zieht und die Handlungen der Figuren in besonderer Weise verurteilt. Unter anderem werden Situationen imaginiert, in denen sich ein Wunschdenken manifestiert, gewisse Ereignisse h�tten in ihrem Verlauf den Vorstellungen des Erz�hlers entsprochen. Dieser Stil f�gt sich zwar in die Tradition der Erz�hlweise eines biographischen Romans ein, wird allerdings hier durch eine besondere Rhetorik hervorgehoben, die durch eine Pervertierung des Vaters und eine Selbstpervertierung des Erz�hlers gekennzeichnet ist.

Es gelingt dem Erz�hler literarisch seine Verachtung und seinen Abscheu gegen�ber der Figur Hans Frank auszudr�cken. Die genealogische Verbindung des Erz�hlers (hier auch der Autor Niklas Frank) zur Hauptfigur – bereits in den ersten Zeilen des Buches deutlich markiert – orientiert den Erz�hler dahingehend, die Verachtung Hans Franks auf sich selbst zu projizieren und damit umzugehen.

Substantial, readable advice on tackling a thesis

When tackling an MBA thesis, this book was the best we came across. It is well-structured, written in a very readable style and has a good index. Jankowicz explains what is usually expected at various levels (from undergraduate to Ph.D.). The content is often academic, but if your thesis is supposed to have a serious academic component and you are interested in producing a solid report, that will help rather than hinder you. It's the kind of book interested students will dip into over and over again in the course of writing a thesis. Having Jankowicz on the shelf won't replace a helpful academic supervisor, but it will answer MANY questions, thus allowing you to use your supervisor's time more productively, for issues specific to your project. If your project is data-heavy, you will need other reference material; suggestions are provided in the book.
